NFL 2009-10 Season

Yeah. I realize we're 0-3, but this move reeks of desperation. He must feel the burn of the hot seat. Especially considering the allotment of stud coaches for the picking next year. Not that any would agree to come to coach the Browns, but that's a discussion for another day. :(
Marty might want to come back. :D

They love Randy Lerner so much in England that somebody wrote a song about him:

Counter point:

In Troy Aikman's first year he finished with an 0-11 record as a starter, completing 155 of 293 passes for 1,749 yards (159 ypg), 9 TDs, 18 INTs. We all know how that "experiment" turned out.

If there are 1,000 QB's who have ever played in the NFL, there are 1,000 different examples you can use to prove any point you want. If I wanted to prove a QB needs to run a marathon before he's ready to play QB, I'm sure I can come up with an example. ;)

My point was that up until last year, conventional wisdom was that a QB needed to sit and watch and learn for a couple of years before he was ready. If he was put in during those first couple of years, it was expected he would fail...and many great ones did at first.

But Flacco and Ryan have gone against conventional wisdom and changed that perception, at least for the time being.

And to add to that....because these two example are so recent and fresh in everyone's mind....and now Sanchez... EVERYONE will want the same thing

Carson Palmer sat his first year and I think it helped him.

What? No Lions? All they did was win their first game in a season and a half!:D

The problem is, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan have changed conventional thinking regarding how long the learning curve should be, and there is a chance Mark Sanchez will do the same.

Sandra

This is true, but EACH of the ones you mentioned had a stable enviroment to fall back on.
Flacco in particular had a top notch D to bail him out, a very nice cushion.

I think Ryan has done more that Flacco, not taking anything away from Flacco, but Ryan didn't have a D that he could fall back on, but he had a very good running game to help him.
Sanchez has a very good O line and an up and coming team.

The Browns on the other hand, have NONE of the previously mentioned attributes.

Look, I've made a case for DA and for BQ. At the same time, I think the most important move Mangini SHOULD HAVE made was to declare a starter and stick with him through hell and high water. He's mis-managed this situation entirely. What if DA stinks it up? Where do you go from there? This back and forth stuff is mentally ruining these young QB's.

This is strike 1 for Mangini.

Have you watched the Lions play QB roulette in the past 20 years ?

Did Ben Roethlesburger sit his first year in the league? I thought he was thrown in pretty quick, and if IIRC won like 7 games in a row?

edit: I just looked it up, he was scheduled to sit the first year, but Charlie Batch got hurt in preseason, moving him up to 2nd string. In the game 2, Tommy Maddox got hurt moving him up to the starter. Ben finished the year going 13-0 and 14-1 including playoffs. Not bad for a rookie imho.
