News from Apple this week

It was a joke. iPhone. iHire etc.

Just like last year I am good with my IPhone 8 Plus. It gets paid off this week. . I would rather have TouchID and there’s nothing I do that needs a newer phone. I’m going to pay off my daughter’s iPhone 7 this week as well (got a deal with Verizon on it earlier this year) and my wife’s 8 Plus was paid off in June. I’m looking forward to having no phone payments on our bill for the first time in 4 years.

Wife is due to get a new iphone this year, hers being 3 year old technology, but she just got a new SE due to a damaged screen costing us a few bucks in April. So I guess we'll pass this year. I'm certainly happy with my XsMax. I'm more interested in how the news affects the stock options that I collected on today.

Just compared my iphone Xs Max to the new iphone 11 Pro Max, both in 512GB and it looks like the new 11 is actually lower cost. That is surprising!

Since Apple will give me $600 for my Xs Max, I'm upgrading to the 11 Pro Max. With the trade-in, the new phone will be $649. I'm sure I'll get the full $600 since I always use a case and screen protector.

It isn't entirely surprising. Apple seems to have caught on that they can't ask industry-leading pricing for equipment that isn't really all that revolutionary compared to their previous models and what else is out there. The absence of 5G will likely become an issue for those who upgrade every two years or less out of habit.

CNET kind of gave the phone offerings the same kind of yawn you were talking about before the presentation today. The assumption remains even among many of the faithful that 2019 is kind of the year that Apple was on vacation and playing some old cards.

I was waiting to see the details on the Watch Series 5 and while I'm saddened by not being able to buy the Series 4 for $50 or $100 off, I won't feel too out of sorts getting the Series 5 (I don't currently own a working watch, let alone a Smart Watch). Of course, I should go the local Apple Store to see if they marked down their existing Series 4 stock.

I really don’t get why they discontinued the series 4 and kept selling the series 3, seems weird. Kind of bummed that I bought my 44mm series 4 this past May and it’s already discontinued.

I don't plan to make the upgrade this year because the additional features doesn't justify it (for me). I have the 512GB version and the upgrade isn't as sweet a deal. I'm quite happy with the quality of the camera. The 120° wide angle would be nice, but I don't think that justifies the upgrade. Next year will be my year to upgrade for 5G. I am curious how the new HDR works when shooting a photo with a bit of movement. Current HDR adds some blur to hide the double image created by the double exposure compositing.

Go to the Apple web page, iPhone - Compare Models and scroll down through the specs for both side by side and you will see where the 11 pro Max is improved over the Xs Max. After I reviewed that is what changed my mind.

Did I hear this correctly?------Apple will start using USB-C on the iPhone>
No- It only has a USB-C wall charger with USB-C cable to Lightning on the phone, same as the prior X and Xs. Besides, I always use wireless charging now anyway.

The camera has the same basic features with some added features with HDR. But the frame rates, slo-mo and image stabilization are the same. Only big difference is the extra wide angle lens.

The screen is the same resolution but double the contrast ratio and brighter. That's great for use in bright sunlight.

For us, a better deal would be for my wife to get the standard 11 for wireless charging and face detection. These are features she expressed a desire to have. She was due to upgrade this year until she broke her screen and now has a new battery anyway which was getting old on her original SE.

The 3 was very popular because of the excellent battery life. I had the 3 and would get 72 hours typical. The 4 gives me about 42 hours. Those extra health sensors running add more drain on the battery. I love my 4 just the same but not planning to get the 5 this year. Always on might further reduce run time between charges.

It is pretty simple actually. The Watch 5 isn't a long putt from the Watch 4 in price or features so they discontinued the Watch 4. Having two devices that are nearly the same causes substantial confusion.
