NCAA Football 2008-09 Season

I was pointing out teams that would make bowl games only so far as to acknowledge that teams that make bowl games win more games than they lose. I even stated that there are so many bowl games that average teams get invited to bowls, just to have enough teams to play in all of them. I would say that it can be used as a measuring stick in the sense that teams with losing records don't make bowls. And I wasn't picking out Ohio State as playing sun Belt teams, just pointing out that the SEC isn't the only conference that schedules them as their out of conference games. It's not like those 8 games against the Sun Belt as a conference is why the teams on Alabama's schedule have a better record than the teams on Penn State's schedule. And the SEC championship game actually has been really good for the conference. It gives teams that win that game credibility, especially if they have one loss. It gives them an added surge of votes at the end of the season, and it worked out for LSU last year. It's what put LSU into the national championship game. Without the SEC championship game, LSU would have been going to a much less prestigious bowl. I dont complain about playing that game, and I think the Big 10 would benefit from adding it. It's one way the Big 10 could strengthen their schedule to gain some national respect. The Big 12 and the SEC are viewed as playing tougher schedules because of the extra game, regardless of which conferences actually have better teams in a particular year.

Got a PTI-style Tossup.

More likely to win the Doak Walker Award: Beanie Wells or Javon Ringer?

How about Moreno from Georgia ?

I think Ringer has played in all the games and Beanie has missed 3 games, so unless they go by avg instead of totals, Beanie would be out of the running.

I would think Ringer over Beanie because of the games missed. I don't think you could go wrong with either guy.
Ringer is a SR, so he will definatly be going to the NFL , Beanie is a Jr and could very well go as well, but then again he may stay. Personally I think Beanie should STAY to see if he can play a whole season next year , thinking that a healthy season would enhance his draft position although I think I have seen him being a top 10 pick this year, if he came out .... If I were a NFL team making that pick, I would be leary of taking him in the top 10 because of injury issues.

This is an advantage for the winner and helps them when votes are tallied against Big Ten team because they end there season earlier so a SEC team that wins normally moves up, because they played and the Big 10 team didn't.
It also serves to dis credit the team that losses though, if your in the game your good, or at least won your side of the conference, with a loss you will drop possibly considerably depending how high you were going in.

No they don't SUCK, they are SMALLER schools ...

Good point, but some do suck though. :)

I don't like this Halloween motif. It's freaking me out.

Mccoy, is there ANY chance LSU looks past Tulane with the huge game against Bama?

I wouldn't be scared about Tulane; Matt Forte is not walking through that door!

I would say yes, there is a good chance. They've looked past them the last several times they've played, and Forte almost made them pay for it last year. Tulane gets up big time when they play LSU and has a history of taking some of the Tiger's best teams down to the wire, even defeating them. Alabama will be the game LSU hangs their hat on to salvage a somewhat disappointing season, so I'm sure they'll be looking ahead to that one. They're probably still reeling from the Georgia loss too. All I can say is they better be playing up to par, or the Greenies might salvage their season. If that happens, the fickle will start jumping off of Les's bandwagon.

jwfgeol,

how do you feel about the Florida/Georgia and Texas/Texas Tech games?
Florida has looked more impressive than Georgia in recent weeks. Yes, Georgia put up a half-century on LSU, but so did Florida. And LSU with a weak QB managed 38 on the Dawgs, even though some of it was in clean-up time. Florida will be looking for revenge after being embarrassed last year in Jacksonville, and I think they'll pull out a close one. The winner of this game will go to Atlanta to take on 'Bama and a possible birth in the national championship.

Texas and Texas Tech is an interesting game because it's two undefeated teams at entirely different points in the season. Texas can focus all their attention on Tech and virtually coast to the Big XII championship game with a win. Tech, on the other hand, is heading into a gauntlet. #1 Texas followed by #9 Oklahoma State and at #4 Oklahoma. If Texas wins, their path to the NC is paved. If Texas Tech wins, they'll prove they belong as one of the top teams in the nation, but they won't be going to the NC. No way they can keep up the intensity with their next three opponents and a conference championship game. Stranger things have happened, but i just don't see it. I look for Colt McCoy to go wild in this game and further cement his invitation to New York. Harrell and Crabtree will shine as usual, but in the end, Texas wins a high scoring shootout.

As for the national championship picture, Penn State is sitting pretty. #21 Michigan State is the only ranked team remaining. If Texas can escape Tech, they'll be looking good as well. 'Bama has the toughest road going to LSU (if this were a night game, I might give the edge to LSU, but it's a 3:30 kickoff) and then taking on the Georgia/Florida winner in Atlanta. Not to mention Auburn looking to salvage their season in the Iron Bowl.

I see Tech winning.

Texas can't keep up this insane hot-streak.

They are going ON THE ROAD, have a terrible pass defense (Remember how Bradford lit them up a few weeks ago?), and are showing signs of breaking down.

Colt McCoy is not invincible- he's great, but no QB can truly be invincible, other than Tommy Frazier in 1995).
