NCAA Championship Week

Congrats to Cleveland St. with a big upset. Congrats, HD!!! Didnt Sabres or someone here say watch out for Cleveland St. because they played Butler so hard a week ago? How about the Big East? It was rumored that 10 teams would go and maybe 7 might get in now. But hey, congrats to Depaul. Dont win a game all year in the conference(?) and won today. GO DEPAUL!!!

Thanks buddy. And glad to have you back. :) :up

Big congratulations to Gary Waters and Cleveland State for reaching the tourney for the first time since 1986! As a lifelong resident of the area and an alumni (2 times) this one is extra special! I'd love to see the city get behind the team like they did in '86 (as I've been told :)).

Kent State, where I also spent 3 years, advanced past the first round of the MAC tourney. I'd love to see them back in the big dance as well. The Flashes started slow, but are getting hot at the right time!

I can't wait for next Thursday!! :)

The Cleveland State Vikings... a History Lesson

For those of you who don't remember or are too young, it's been quite a while since the Cleveland State Vikings last appeared in the NCAA Tournament. As a matter of fact, the last time they were in was 1986! So, it's kinda a big deal around these parts. Anyways, let me rewind to 1986.........

The 1985-86 Vikings finished 21-8 (11-3 in the AMCU-8). Led by third-year head coach, Kevin Mackey, Cleveland State won 14 games in a row that year and 29 games that season, a school record that still stands today.

The Vikings drew a #14 seed in the Tournament and had to face the Bobby Knight Coached, #3 seeded Indiana Hoosiers in the first round. The Vikings upset the Hoosiers and went on to beat #6 ranked St. Joseph's to make it all the way to the Sweet 16!

But the Vikings dream came to an end at the hands of the David Robinson led Navy Basketball team that year. It was a thrilling game though and the Vikings lost by only 1 point (71-70).

That year, the city was a buzz. Cleveland State was our very own Cinderella. The city had reason to hope after all! This is what this season is all about!

I wonder what this year's team has in store? At least now they're back in, there is reason to hope again....

I remember that run. They had a player by the name of Mouse McFadden, who became an instant tournament legend (ala Bryce Drew and Stephon Curry).

I was only 6 at the time, so I don't remember it.....I've heard the stories from older siblings, though. I am old enough to remember Kevin Mackey's unfortunate crack/prostitute crash and burn....

Yup, that was VERY unfortunate. He was a rising star in the collegiate coaching ranks.

Me too, all of these memories are rehashed from stories told to me by my Dad. He still talks about that team today. :)

Last year (I think), STO aired all of CSU's games from the 86 tournament. It was cool to actually watch what I've heard so much about. Maybe they'll show them again this year.

That win over Indiana was really impressive when you consider that they went on to win it all the following year.
