Congratulations Zydrunas! 724 & Counting!!! A Few Words.....
Last night, longtime Cavs center, Zydrunas Ilgauskas became the Cavaliers franchise leader in games played. Congratulations Big Z! You deserve this more than any other Cavalier in their history!
Upon entering the game, Z got a standing ovation from the sellout Quicken Loans Arena crowd. It was a touching moment. A moment in which Z later said:
“That was one of the coolest things I’ve experienced in my life, and also the closest I’ve probably come to tears on the basketball floor."
To understand the importance of this record, you must first know the story of Ilgauskas. Big Z got drafted by the Cavs in 1996. At the time, Z was pegged to be the replacement to the aging Brad Daugherty. During this time, the Cavs went through quite a rebuilding movement from the winning surge during the late '80's- early '90's. Throughout his career, Z has seen the worst of times and now the best of times.
Before Z became the center we all know and love today, he had five surgeries on both feet between 1996-2001. He'd come back, play well, and another bone would break. No one knew if the operations would ever work or if his career would go anywhere.
He could've easily taken the money he earned to that point and said "forget it". Instead, Z was determined to get back to the court and pay back the fans, team and city of Cleveland for all of their patience and hope for the 7'3" center from Lithuania. Ilgauskas returned from his fifth surgery after the 2001-02 season and has not missed any games because of foot problems since. For him to accomplish this record is a testament to his hard work and determination.
As for the drama with Coach Mike Brown in deciding not to play him in the previous game in which he was set to break the record (his first "DNP-Coaches Decision" in his career btw), Z took the high road.....
"Obviously I was very disappointed that I didn't play in the last game," he said. "I know I'm a good player. I think by me playing in that game, I would not have affected the outcome of the game. What made me more disappointed and upset were the acts that followed. This whole mess that has been created."
"I'm not going to go into any details. Once again, I'm going to be a bigger man and walk away from this. I know when I go to bed at night, my conscience is clear. What I'm going to do is continue to do my job. I love this team, I love my teammates; they're like a family to me. I'm going to come every day to work and try my hardest, win some games and hope to bring a championship to this city because they deserve it."
Congrats big fella. You are the ultimate Cleveland Cavalier! I can't wait to give you a standing ovation in person this Friday when I visit you at the Q against the Bulls when you go for #725!
