NASCAR 2010 Season

Its at discretion of NASCAR and as I posted back a few pages ago the wreck was on the backstretch and out of the way so why throw the yellow?

There would have been a riot if they threw the yellow when there was NOTHING ahead of the leaders except the finish line :)
I agree. I just hate that don't race to the checkered flag rule, and they need to get rid of it. Nice to see they didn't enforce it yesterday. Even the commentators said so.

Not sure if my sarcasm came thru on my previous post. :)

Good run by Jr, btw. Kahne wasn't so lucky...

Daytona 500 Draws Lowest Rating Since 1991

The race portion of the 2010 Daytona 500, won by Jamie McMurray, drew a 7.7/16 fast-national rating and 13.3 million viewers on FOX Sunday -- down 16% in ratings and 17% in viewers from last year (9.2, 16.0 mil), and down 25% in ratings and viewership from 2008 (10.2/20, 17.8 mil).

This marks the lowest rated Daytona 500 since 1991 (7.6, CBS), and the least-viewed since 2000 (12.9 mil, CBS).

Overall, Sunday's race ranks as the fourth-lowest rated Daytona 500 since at least '74.

Additionally, the race aired opposite the 2010 Winter Olympics on NBC. The last time the Daytona 500 aired during the Olympics (2006), the race drew an 11.3/23 and 19.4 million viewers. Keep in mind that year's race aired on NBC, which was also carrying the Olympics -- not only helping the Daytona 500 avoid competing with the Winter Games, but also giving the race a major promotional platform.

To put the numbers in perspective, the 2010 Daytona 500 ranks behind the 2009 NBA Finals on ABC (8.4, 14.3 mil), the 2009 World Series on FOX (11.7, 19.3 mil), the 2009 NCAA Final Four on CBS (9.1, 14.9 mil), the final round of The Masters on CBS (8.3, 14.3 mil), and the race portion of the Kentucky Derby on NBC (9.8, 16.3 mil), among others.

Since 1974? They started showing the whole race in 1979 which should be where you start comparing.

1974 was the first time that the Daytona 500 was broadcast live (albeit, the broadcast began when the race was halfway over) in some shape or form. Prior to that, the Daytona 500 was presented as a highlight package for ABC's Wide World of Sports.

Did you not read my post though? The first flag to flag broadcast was in 1979.

It may be a nit but the article is wrong. You cannot compare partial broadcasts with flag to flag broadcasts.

I think there were several things working against the race. The opening weekend of the Olympics being the biggest and 2 hrs of pot hole repair didn't help.

I think the ratings may have been better had the Olympics not been in N America and mostly live.

Despite the article saying the red flags were not figured into the ratings, how can they selectively pull out those portions of the broadcast? I will say that I really don't understand the ratings system that well so I could be all wet on that.

Of course, I read your post. Just because the first flag to flag broadcast occurred in 1979 doesn't automatically mean that it was the first time that the Daytona 500 was aired on television!:p

Yeah, but I don't really count the others because they weren't full broadcasts.

The poll question going into last weekend in many places was, which will you watch ?

Nascar Daytona 500
Olympic's opening
Nba All Star game

Anyone have any info on how those ratings ended up ?

I would say with the Olympics starting, I would expect that to be the top.
I would think with all the delays with the race, that probably hurt more than anything.

they are not repaving Daytona. they were just talking on speed channel. that are going to use a 8' x 18' concrete patch. i want it repaved. i think the racing will be a lot better on a new track surface.

The drivers would overwhelmingly disagree with you. Most like it the way it is and don't want it to be "Talledegaish"

When will NASCAR ever put up a real webpage, still looking for qualifing results from Friday for Fontana......

Apparently they like to hide this info.

I dont see it anywhere posted but last night during Qualifying they mentioned that the cup, nationwide and truck owned by James Finch lost their sponsorship of the Miccosukee Indian tribe this week. I guess they got new folks heading the tribe and they decided to pull out of NASCAR immediately.
