MLB Trades and Rumors

Quote of the day:
“In effect, Martinez gives the Red Sox protection against regressions by Lowell, catcher Jason Varitek and designated hitter David Ortiz.”

Nice, the Indians ex-best player is “insurance” for the $120 million team. :(

3:03 p.m.: SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Braves would be interested in Adam LaRoche if the Red Sox make him available. LaRoche, who spent the first three years of his career with the Braves, would probably be expendable if the Red Sox complete the Martinez deal.

It wasn't just the MLBNet and ESPN experts making this claim. The Sox are probably just making these comments so they don't offend their current players. Martinez is a much better hitter than Lowell, Ortiz, and Veritek. If he is a backup to them, then the Sox are stupid.

Unless they use him as an everyday player that backs up all three of them from time to time.

I have seen him play 1B, can he play 3B?

Maybe something like this could this be a typical week??:

3 games - VMart C, Youk 1B, Lowell 3B, Papi DH
2 games - Tek C, VMart 1B, Youk 3B, Papi DH
1 game - Tek C, VMart 1B, Lowell 3B, Papi DH
1 game - Tek C, Youk 1B, Lowell 3B, VMart DH

Wouldn't they be better suited to have Martinez at catcher? And besides, Youk plays First base. Never understood the LaRoche trade form the beginning.

I think he will primarily be their 1st baseman and backup Tek. If they get him, then they will trade LaRoche.

He has played 3B before, but not too often.

The Dodgers getting Gonzalez and Bell rumor is starting to catch some steam. If this happens, then they will have a better power bat at 1st and 3 closers.

What about Youk? Where does he play now, if not first base?

3:12 p.m. ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi says he's "got nothing" when it comes to a possible deal for Roy Halladay.

See, that's smart. Roy is still under contract for next year. They can retain him again in 2010, and if they aren't in the playoff hunt, they can trade him to a contending team next year. This is what I hoped the Indians would do with Cliff.

One year from now the Blue Jays won't get anywhere near the packages they are currently turning down for Halladay. At that point he'll be nothing more than a two month rental.
