Rockies Inquire On Justin Duchscherer

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 5:57pm CST]
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rockies have inquired on A's starter Justin Duchscherer as part of their hunt for a starter. Duchscherer is under team control through '09.

Yeah, right, If I know Oakland, they'll get rid of him.

The Rangers are "expected to be among the top bidders" for CC Sabathia this winter.

Sabathia in Texas?

Uh-oh- this could be shades of Mike Hampton (big-name pitcher in a bandbox).

Why would Sabathia go to Texas who are going no place where he could stay with the Brewers and go far in the playoffs. I'm a Mets fan but I wouldn't mind having him on my team.

If he didn't care about his salary, I'm sure he would've preferred to stay in Cleveland. The point is, the Brewers aren't expected to have the funds to be able to sign Sabathia for what he will command following this season. Texas and other teams will have the money to offer to Sabathia. Players typically go to the highest bidder.

Colorado wants way too much for Fuentes and see no reason to trade him with the playoffs still a possibility; look for Fuentes, like Holliday, to continue to be a Rockie!

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes [July 28 at 9:37pm CST]
9:35pm: The D'Backs are considered "highly unlikely" to acquire Ramirez. So now we have denials from all four teams named this morning.
9:08pm: The Dodgers would only be interested in Ramirez if the Red Sox took Andruw Jones back.
8:42pm: Peter Gammons has some unkind words for Manny.
6:46pm: Cross the Mets off the list too, according to Jayson Stark.
3:06pm: GM Pat Gillick says the Phillies have no interest in Ramirez. He makes the fairly obvious point that the Phils don't have an open position for Manny.
9:26am: Click here for a refresher on yesterday's Manny Ramirez rumors. He said he would approve a trade, if the Red Sox can find one. Todd Zolecki noted that the Phillies have discussed Manny internally.
  • Dan Graziano and Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger talked to an official who says the Mets and Phillies are both in "serious pursuit" of Ramirez. If so, why do both teams have no interest in Adam Dunn? Graziano and Price think Ramirez would command big-name prospects like Fernando Martinez or Lou Marson.
  • Sean McAdam says the Sox have spoken to four teams about Manny: the Phillies, Mets, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers. McAdam says Ramirez will waive his no-trade clause for a guarantee that his options will be declined. Additionally, the Red Sox might consider kicking in money to get better players in return.
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday says the Mets aren't interested in Ramirez and continue to eye Raul Ibanez. However, the asking price may be too high.
  • Paul Hagen finds no indication that the Phillies are interested. And unless Pat Burrell is included in a deal, he or Ramirez would have to play right field. Umm...no.
  • Jeff Passan thinks that all things considered, Manny still might be worth keeping in Boston for $20MM in '09.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes [July 28, 2008 at 9:39pm CST]
9:39pm: Steve Gilbert of MLB.com has a source saying the D'Backs don't want to part with Conor Jackson, Max Scherzer, or Jarrod Parker for Teixeira.
7:12pm: David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked to GM Frank Wren, who says the Braves have deals on the table right now for Teixeira. Wren is still trying to find the best deal.
6:38pm: The Braves are now taking bids for Teixeira. ESPN's Jayson Stark says the teams in the mix are the D'Backs, Red Sox, Rays, and Angels. Still, Arizona seems the most logical fit. The Angels won't trade Casey Kotchman, and the Braves don't care for Kendry Morales.
5:08pm: According to Yahoo's Steve Henson, negotiations between the Braves and Diamondbacks for first baseman Mark Teixeira are "pretty far along." Henson talked to a front office source from another team interested in Tex. The Braves reportedly want a prospect plus Chad Tracy or Conor Jackson.
ESPN's Keith Law wrote earlier today that the Braves have at least four suitors for Teixeira.

The problem with this is, you can cross off all the teams you want, but they can say what they want in the press and turn around and say the exact opposite to the team, so just because they deny it now, doesn't mean it's gospel !
This goes for ALL teams.

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Tuesday

By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 2:36pm CST]
2:36pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post has the Dodgers in the lead for Manny. The Red Sox would eat most or all of the $7MM remaining on Ramirez's deal, and then receive a player like Matt Kemp or Andre Ethier. Such a deal would enable the Sox to enter the Mark Teixeira bidding.
Sherman also talked to one NL exec who believes the Dodgers might instead acquire Brian Roberts, pushing Jeff Kent into a utility role and leaving the shortstop problem unresolved.
1:05pm: Looks like Manny's going to need his own post, after all. Earlier today, Dan Graziano said the Mets are still in on Ramirez despite the denials. Now SI.com's Jon Heyman adds that the Dodgers are showing interest. The talks are still in their infancy, and keep in mind that the Dodgers do not want to add payroll.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Tuesday

By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 2:33pm CST]
2:33pm: Joel Sherman sees this is as a battle between the D'Backs and Red Sox. However, the Red Sox will only jump in if they are able to move Manny Ramirez.
1:01pm: ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Dodgers and Yankees have also flirted with the idea of acquiring Teixeira. The Braves want a big-league ready bat, preferably a first baseman, in any trade.
12:23pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Angels and D'Backs are competing for Teixeira. The Halos would like to expand the deal to include a lefty reliever like Will Ohman or Mike Gonzalez. Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana are off-limits, but Casey Kotchman and Juan Rivera can be had. Not sure why Rivera would appeal to the Braves, since he's a free agent after the season.
8:29am: When we last left off, various sources conflicted on whether the D'Backs are the frontrunner to acquire Mark Teixeira. Let's kick off a new thread for the likely slew of new Tex rumors today.
According to Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times, the Angels are once again exploring a trade for Teixeira. They are warming to the idea of adding a rental player to their first-place club. The price for Teixeira is said to be a first baseman, starter, and power-hitting outfielder. DiGiovanna also wonders if a deal could be expanded to include Will Ohman, much like last year when the Rangers added Ron Mahay.

I can only imagine how much Bill would love to see Teixeira in Boston.

And, of course, if Manny goes, his Red Sox 'strike' would be over.

Teixeira is a good ballplayer, but if the Sox trade for him (which means Manny would be gone) they would have to move Kevin Youkilis to leftfield. At Fenway they might be able to get away with it, but in a ballpark with a more cavernous leftfield.............:eek::eek:

That's why I would prefer Matt Holliday (my first choice :D) or Pat Burrell, either could slide right into the leftfielder slot.

The Red Sox have interest in Houston reliever, Doug Brocail, and also Rangers catching prospect, Taylor Teagarden.

With Teixeira traded to the Angels, I don't have to worry about Youkilis playing leftfield now.

Red Sox Eyeing Relief Options

By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 12:52pm CST]
12:51pm: MLB.com's Jim Molony says Brocail, Geary, and Jose Valverde aren't going anywhere since the Astros are actually looking to add to their 'pen.
11:21am: ESPN's Peter Gammons says the Red Sox have been discussing Doug Brocail with the Astros.
9:57am: Boston's top priority at the trade deadline seems to be relief help, if anything. They were linked to several relievers this morning.
Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal says the Sox "are interested again and expect expect to get back to the Royals on Ron Mahay." Mahay is generally believed to be unavailable.
Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald has the Red Sox eyeing Geoff Geary, Brian Fuentes, George Sherrill, and Will Ohman. Ohman seems the likeliest candidate, though they may have competition for him in the division-rival Rays.

I can't believe Brocail is still pitching ....Wow, he was with the Tigers, it seems like what, 10 years ago ?

Jimbo

You're right Jimbo. I looked up his stats when I found out the Red Sox were interested, he pitched for the Tigers more than a decade ago and is 41 years old.

Tigers Unlikely To Acquire Reliever

By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 9:19am CST]
Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says the Tigers aren't liking the market price for relief help. The chances of Dave Dombrowski adding a top guy like George Sherrill are slim to none. (By the way, if Sherrill has another outing like last night his ERA will be approaching 5.00.)
Morosi says picking up a cheap unwanted reliever like Brian Wolfe or LaTroy Hawkins is plausible, but promoting from within is even more likely. If the Tigers are contending in September might we see Ryan Perry as the first '08 draft pick to reach the bigs?

Rays Deep In Talks For Bay

By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 8:43am CST]
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are deep into talks with the Rays and other teams about left fielder Jason Bay. However, no "truly elite prospect" has been offered yet, and the chances are better than 50-50 that Bay stays. And who would move to right field for the Rays - Bay or Carl Crawford? The Braves are considered out of the mix.
Shortstop Jack Wilson seems likely to stay, while reliever John Grabow will probably be dealt.
