ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting that the Dodgers and Indians are close to a deal to send Casey Blake to LA.

The Cleveland Indians traded third baseman/outfielder Casey Blake and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor leaguers on Saturday.

Blake

"Casey Blake is a gamer," Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said. "His experience and character will be a plus as we head down the stretch in the final two months of the regular season."

The Indians received minor league catcher Carlos Santana and right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan. Santana is hitting .323, with 14 homers, for Inland Empire, in the Class A California League. The hard-throwing Meloan is 5-10, with a 4.97 ERA, at Triple-A Las Vegas -- but has piled up 335 strikeouts in only 262 innings in his minor league career.
With the trade of Xavier Nady to the Yankees on Friday, Blake was possibly the most highly sought-after bat on the market. Other teams that pursued Blake included the Rays, Mets and Phillies.

Damn! I was just thinking yesterday that with 1 week left before the deadline that maybe the Indians were rethinking their intentions with Blake. Guess not. Goodbye Casey. You will be missed. Another everyday mainstay traded away for prospects....

Truth be told, he was having a career year and with his expiring contract, his value may never be higher. The Indians want to eventually put Victor Martinez at 1B to prolong his career and would need a prospect catcher behind Kelly Shopach and Sal Fassano. This Carlos Santana is supposed to have some decent power.

Not too sure about the pitcher they got. (Jon Meloan). From what I've heard, he's been at the AAA level for some time. He throws in the mid/upper 90's and has quite a few strikeouts. From what I hear, he may be a candidate for the vacant closing position in the future.

Second Trade for the Indians

Indians acquire RHP Reyes from Cardinals

Anthony Reyes, who won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series for St. Louis, was traded by the Cardinals on Saturday to the Cleveland Indians for minor league pitcher Luis Perdomo.

The 26-year-old Reyes has split this season between the Cardinals’ bullpen and the starting rotation at Triple-A Memphis. The right-hander was on St. Louis’ opening day roster and went 2-1 with a save in 10 relief appearances. He was placed on the disabled list in June with a sprained right elbow.

At Memphis, Reyes was 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 11 starts.

I like this trade a lot. Plus, we only gave up a AA player to get Reyes.

Reyes was the Game 1 pitcher in the WS only 2 short years ago. It appearers as if he's fallen out of graces in St. Louis since then though. Maybe a change of scenery is what Reyes needs. At 26, I'm definitely happy about taking a flyer on him.

More From Stark: Mets, Dodgers, Indians

By Cork Gaines [July 26 at 6:43pm CST]
Jayson Stark brings us a few more tidbits from the Hot Stove...
  • The price for Raul Ibanez may be too high for the Mets as Stark reiterates what we heard previously, that Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese are not available...Ken Rosenthal added Robert Parnell to that list of untouchables.
  • The Mets may no longer be in the running for Brian Fuentes as they are not willing to part with Aaron Heilman.
  • Stark says other relief pitchers the Mets have shown some interest in include Cla Meredith, Chad Bradford and Jeremy Affeldt.
  • The Dodgers are said to be interested in several relief pitchers, including Fuentes, George Sherrill, David Weathers and Alan Embree, but they are not interested in Huston Street. The other possibility is Greg Maddux, who would allow the Dodgers to move another starter to the bullpen.
  • The Indians' primary goal now is to deal Paul Byrd.

Washburn To Yankees Close To Done-Deal

By Cork Gaines [July 26 at 6:19pm CST]
[Update: 6:15pm] Ken Rosenthal just reported during the Fox telecast that the deal is now being held up by the Mariners demand for a top prospect in addition to the Yankees taking the remainder of Washburn's contract.
[Update: 5:53pm] Gregor Chisholm is now reporting that Washburn is still listed as the Mariners starting pitcher for Sunday.
[Update: 5:04pm] Jon Heyman is also saying that the deal could be done in the next couple of days. He also notes that any compensation for Washburn would not be in the form of an extension from the Yankees.
[Update: 4:52pm] Peter Abraham is now reporting that the deal could happen as early as tomorrow and that the Yankees are willing to pay all of the salary remaining on the contract "in return for not sending Seattle any player of significance. No, not Kei Igawa." Abraham also feels that any compensation would come from Seattle.
[Update: 4:31pm] Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times spoke with Washburn following today's game and Washburn gave no indication that a deal was done, or even imminent. Washburn did make it clear that he will seek some form of compensation in return for waiving his no-trade clause.
Buster Olney is reporting that the oft-talked about deal in which the Mariners would send Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees, will likely be completed in the next 48 hours. Olney suggests that the move is a salary dump with $13-14MM still owed to Washburn ($3-4MM in '08, $10.35MM in '09). If the Yankees take on most or all of the remaining contract, do not look for any big names to be going back in the other direction.
I spoke with Peter Abraham of the Journal-News and he reiterated that Brian Cashman is saying that the deal is not done yet.

There could be hope yet:

Manny Ramirez Speculation: Phils, Dbacks, Mets

By Nat Boyle [July 27 at 10:57am CST]
Theo Epstein told Tim McCarver he'd try to trade Manny Ramirez if he'd waive his 10-and-5 no-trade rights. If Ramirez were to be dealt, he'd most likely require either an extension or reassurance that his $20MM option would not be picked up so he could reach free agency. Here's some reverb from Epstein's remarks:
  • Jon Heyman says the Mets have no interest in Manny. His string of bad behavior this year has been undoubtedly a turnoff. They'd rather pursue Raul Ibanez.
  • The Boston Herald's Tony Masarotti doesn't think the team needs "to find a Hall of Fame-caliber player to replace him anymore because Ramirez no longer is a Hall of Fame-caliber player." He even cites David Murphy as a more productive outfielder since April.
  • Joel Sherman and Mike Puma speculate on Manny to the Phillies. Manager Charlie Manuel and Manny have remained close since Manuel was his hitting coach in Cleveland. They go on to list Arizona as having interest as well but that Manny might not accept a trade to anywhere but Philadelphia.

Mark Teixeira Round Up

By Nat Boyle [July 27 at 10:17am CST]
More on the Mark Teixeira front: Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal Constitution names four guys the Braves have been reportedly targeting in deals for Teixeira. Nobody new appears, but it's good fodder for conversation:
Kevin Youkilis: Ortiz is healthy and Youkilis has been arguably the Red Sox MVP so far this season, not far off from Teixeira in production. Both sides deny it. Mixed reviews from MLBTR readers. Can we put this to rest?
James Loney: Keith Law reported yesterday on the Dodgers' as a good fit with the caveat that Loney would have to either be included in the deal or default to the bench. If included, Loney would be a good a catch for the Braves. At age 24, he's getting paid $411,000 to hit .301 and drive in a team-high 57 RBI. He won't hit free agency until 2013. Far be it from me to predict what the Dodgers will do, but Loney has to be at least somewhat untouchable.
Conor Jackson: These rumors have been disspelled for now.
Casey Kotchman: Maybe the only intriguing possibility on this list, Kotchman is only 25 and not eligible for free agency until 2012. The Angels dangled him and Joe Saunders in a deal for Teixeira before the Braves one-upped them. The Halo's offense has picked it up this month and Scioscia's saying they don't need help. Still, with the addition of Teixeira, the Angels would be scary.

Historically, the Angels do not trade for mid-season rentals. And while Kotchman is no Teixeira yet, he is an awesome 1B defensively. His ceiling is quite frightening. I think the nagels will stay put especially if they continue to win on the road until the deadline.

Jarrod Washburn is pitching today for the Mariners and with broadcaster Dave Niehaus being inducted in Cooperstown no deal is likely until Monday.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times weighs what the options are:
Mariners Blog | The Seattle Times

-- The Yankees and Mariners are talking

-- New York was apparently reluctant to assume all of Washburn's $13.5 million in owed salary, while the M's want the Yanks to eat all of it

-- At one point, New York proposed that Seattle take Class AAA pitcher Kei Igawa, owed $4 million in each of the next three years, to offset that Washburn salary cost

-- Seattle would want value if this wasn't a total salary dump. At this point is where the names of players like Cabrera, Gardner and Jose Vidro start getting tossed around. In other words, the M's get some value back in terms of an outfielder who can contribute to their squad at a low cost. The Vidro equation would see some more money taken off Seattle's hands and potentially give the Yankees a useful switch-hitter.

A deal for landing the Mariners Melky Cabrera would provide the bat that would make trading Raul Ibanez and/or Adrian Beltre possible.

The Tigers are eyeing Giants lefty reliever, Jack Taschner.

The Marlins (who IMO, are for real) have inquired on Giants catcher, Bengie Molina.

Rockies Inquire On Justin Duchscherer

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 5:57pm CST]
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rockies have inquired on A's starter Justin Duchscherer as part of their hunt for a starter. Duchscherer is under team control through '09. As you know, the Rockies also asked the Reds about Bronson Arroyo.
Olney notes that GM Dan O'Dowd continues to talk to other teams about Brian Fuentes. It seems quite possible that the Rockies will try to have it both ways.

Perrotto's Latest: Ross, Jacobs, Kent, Burnett

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 6:39pm CST]
Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto has a new column.
  • The Mets are looking at relievers Huston Street, Brian Fuentes, Arthur Rhodes, and Eddie Guardado. On the radar for outfielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, and Randy Winn.
  • A new suitor for Fuentes has emerged: the Diamondbacks. Would they really make another move for a reliever? Other known suitors were named here.
  • The Marlins would consider trading Cody Ross or Mike Jacobs for relief help.
  • New name on the Rays' radar: Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent. They're better off with Akinori Iwamura aren't they?
  • George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins, and Phillies.
  • The Blue Jays may offer A.J. Burnett an additional $2MM per year to convince him to stay for 2009-10.
  • The Rangers are "expected to be among the top bidders" for CC Sabathia this winter.
