MLB 2013 Season

Correct me if I'm wrong Bill, but Big Papi is the only Red Sox player that was on the team when they last visited San Francisco in 2004 (one of their reg. season interleague stops en route to winning it all was in San Francisco).

The Sox last visited San Francisco more recently than 2004. They played a 3 game series there in June 2010.

There was a lot of VERY GOOD relievers over time... I wouldn't say Mariono was the best of them all ... he was the best of the current time frane though.

You gotta remember, the relievers job changed drastically from the 70's and 80' till now ...

Back in the day a good closer would be brought in in the 8th inning if needed, sometimes even earlier.
Now days, they can't handle more than 1 inning in most cases.

Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter, Goose Gossage come to mind off the top of my head.

Again, the Closer role has changed drastically since these guys played.

The Dodgers had a closer that won the Cy Young in 1974 by the name of Mike Marshall that consistently got saves by pitching the last 3 innings of a game.

He pitched 208 innings that year.

Yup, he's another one .... like I said, those were just off the top of my head.

Bad news for the Braves! This guy is a class act as well as a fine player:

  • NEW YORK -- Right fielder Jason Heyward exited the Braves' 4-1 win against
the Mets on Wednesday after being hit in the right jaw with a pitch from New
York starter Jon Niese. Heyward was seen by Mets doctors once he left the game,
and was then transported to a local hospital to undergo X-rays and further
tests. According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, Heyward has a broken jaw and will
    miss four to six weeks.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Niese's pitch appeared to hit the ear flap
of Heyward's helmet. Heyward immediately fell to the ground, while head trainer
Jeff Porter and manager Fredi Gonzalez ran out to attend to him.

"It was tough. I wanted to elevate a fastball right there, and then it didn't
really slip out of my hands, but it kind of just ran in on him," Niese said.
"Obviously no intent, but I just felt bad. It's every pitcher and every hitter's
worst nightmare. I just hope he's OK."

After a few minutes, Heyward stood up and walked off the field with Porter
holding his arm. Jordan Schafer pinch-ran for Heyward.

Gonzalez said Porter is with Heyward at the hospital. Gonzalez also said the
team will likely be flying to St. Louis by the time he hears any updates on
    Heyward's condition.

"He never lost consciousness," Gonzalez said. "He was talking the whole time
when he got hit with the ball. Before they took him to the hospital, he popped
his head into the dugout and said 'bye' to some of the guys. I got a chance to
talk to him briefly after that."

Gonzalez said Heyward was spitting up blood.

Losing Heyward for any length of time would certainly be a big loss for the
Braves' lineup. Heyward entered Wednesday's game hitting .254 with 13 home runs
and 37 RBIs for Atlanta this season, and was hitting .357 in the 21 games since
    moving to the leadoff spot.

Justin Upton, who's nursing a left upper back strain, was in the trainer's
room when Heyward came off the field to get checked out. Heyward was shook up,
    but was talking.

"You hate to see it happen at all, but especially when he's been contributing
so much to us, and he's kind of been a spark for us," Upton said. "Hopefully the
best result comes out of it and it's not too bad and he's back with it
    soon."

? This is horrible. While not as devastating as the Hudson loss(Hudson may not ever be able to return to baseball),it still hurts the Braves. I wonder when he comes back,if he'll have a face mask attached to his helmet(& maybe he'll wear one of those "Mr. Kazoo/Great Kazoo" batting helmets when he returns) like batters wear in the sport of cricket,& don't women's softball batters wear facemasks with their batting helmets.

I agree. When saves first became an official stat you had to pitch the last 3 innings of the game.

As a Red Sox fan, I argue that Bill Campbell, Luis Aponte, Skip Lockwood and Mark Clear were the best closers of all time!! :D

Seriously though, I don't think there's any debate who the greatest is, and that's Mo Rivera. It's not his fault that the game changed during his era, he still slammed the door. And nobody slammed the door more consistently and over a larger period of time than Mo.....#2 isn't even that close.

You left off Dick Radatz.

BTW, contrary to legend, Radatz did not strike out Mickey Mantle 60-something times in 80-something at bats, as Mantle used to tell people. He only struck him out 12 times in 16 at bats.

The Monstahhh was too good to be included with the flotsam and jetsam that I mentioned.

Speaking of Radatz, nobody was more outspoken than he was with how modern pitchers were pampered. The mere mention of pitch counts and specialty relievers made his blood boil!

With off days bookending the series with the Dodgers, I'm assuming the Sox will go Lackey/Lester/Peavy in LA. They can then open their long homestand with Doubront pitching on five days rest next Tuesday against the Orioles.
Fortunately for you guys, you get to avoid 2 of the 3 Dodger aces, no Greinke and no Kershaw. You get to face the Dodgers two worst starters including the only one with a losing record and an ERA over 3.00.

Pitching matchups

Friday: Lackey, 8-10, 3:22 vs Nolasco, 4-1, 2.98
Saturday: Lester, 11-7, 4.09 vs Ryu, 12-4, 2.95 (Tied for lead on Dodgers in wins and their #3 ace)
Sunday: 1-1, 4.18 vs Capuano, 4-6, 4.70

You get to miss Kershaw, 12-7, 1.80 and Greinke, 12-3, 2.91

Dempster's next start has been moved back yet again, to August 30th. The Red Sox schedule included two off days in the interval following his incident, August 22 and 26, so it looks like the Sox were going to leave out the fifth starter anyway, meaning his suspension had no effect whatsoever on the scheduled starting assignments.

Middlebrooks is hitting over .400, Iglesias is hitting .300 or so in Detroit, and the much vilified Stephanie, 0-for-Drew is hitting .314 and slugging .471 in 20 games in August, and is third among American League shortstops in homers and RBI in spite of missing 26 games, and he will be third in slugging and OPS as soon as he gains twelve more plate appearances to qualify, and two of the Red Sox top minor leaguers are left side infielders. They can move Middlebrooks to first next year and you can move any minor league left side infielders to left field. Who knows, Drew may yet have a home in Boston. He's only 30 years old, plays Gold Glove caliber defense, and might me looking for just three years, which may be reasonable for a player of his caliber.

Soooo, I guess this series is all set up as a no win situation for the Red Sox.

Win the series: well, they missed the Dodgers top 2 starters
Lose the series: can you imagine how bad it would have been if they had to face the top two starters

I get it now, thanks. ;)

The Mets have done some serious damage to the Braves the last few weeks. Losing Hudson was horrible but in my opinion this injury hurts the Braves more. Not only has Heyward done a great job in the lead off role but he has saved a few games with his glove work in centerfield also. Even though Juston Upton has had two good months this year you would be hard pressed to say he, his brother B.J, Schafer, or even Gatis could be counted on to replace Heywards bat. Well, the test starts today in St. Louis so we shall see how it goes.

That is how the Boston Media tends to view things.

Is that how they viewed the Giants series? "You played a last place team, you should have swept them, not win only 2 of 3." - made up Media comment :D

Seriously though, I don't think any one team will sweep. One team will win 2 of 3 and all three games should be close.

Even if the Dodgers do get swept they will still finish the season with a winning record against the AL and a winning record against the AL east. They currently have a better record against the AL east than they do against any other division (Sox are the only team they have yet to play vs the AL east.)
