MLB 2013 Season

The league could best punish the Red Sox by making him pitch.

Dempster's next regular day would have been Thursday, which is an off day, so Lackey, Lester and Peavey can pitch on their regular days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, meaning that Dempster only gets pushed back a few days in the rotation.

From what I heard, the Sox have off days coming up where he wouldn't have pitched anyways, suspension or not. He should have to miss at least one start.

I would agree if he appealed and ended up serving it at a time more convenient. But, with a SP, other than the current 5 game suspension, how can you guarantee the pitcher will actually miss a start??

Maybe the minimum suspension for a SP should be 8 games.....That way you're guaranteed of disrupting the rotation cycle

Dumpster update. It turns out that the Red Sox had already planned to push Dempster back two days and let Lackey pitch ahead of him on Friday, on what would have been his fifth day anyway, and then Dempster was going to pitch on six days rest Saturday, so now he gets pushed back only two days to Monday.

Bad news for the Braves! This guy is a class act as well as a fine player:

  • NEW YORK -- Right fielder Jason Heyward exited the Braves' 4-1 win against
the Mets on Wednesday after being hit in the right jaw with a pitch from New
York starter Jon Niese. Heyward was seen by Mets doctors once he left the game,
and was then transported to a local hospital to undergo X-rays and further
tests. According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, Heyward has a broken jaw and will
    miss four to six weeks.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Niese's pitch appeared to hit the ear flap
of Heyward's helmet. Heyward immediately fell to the ground, while head trainer
Jeff Porter and manager Fredi Gonzalez ran out to attend to him.

"It was tough. I wanted to elevate a fastball right there, and then it didn't
really slip out of my hands, but it kind of just ran in on him," Niese said.
"Obviously no intent, but I just felt bad. It's every pitcher and every hitter's
worst nightmare. I just hope he's OK."

After a few minutes, Heyward stood up and walked off the field with Porter
holding his arm. Jordan Schafer pinch-ran for Heyward.

Gonzalez said Porter is with Heyward at the hospital. Gonzalez also said the
team will likely be flying to St. Louis by the time he hears any updates on
    Heyward's condition.

"He never lost consciousness," Gonzalez said. "He was talking the whole time
when he got hit with the ball. Before they took him to the hospital, he popped
his head into the dugout and said 'bye' to some of the guys. I got a chance to
talk to him briefly after that."

Gonzalez said Heyward was spitting up blood.

Losing Heyward for any length of time would certainly be a big loss for the
Braves' lineup. Heyward entered Wednesday's game hitting .254 with 13 home runs
and 37 RBIs for Atlanta this season, and was hitting .357 in the 21 games since
    moving to the leadoff spot.

Justin Upton, who's nursing a left upper back strain, was in the trainer's
room when Heyward came off the field to get checked out. Heyward was shook up,
    but was talking.

"You hate to see it happen at all, but especially when he's been contributing
so much to us, and he's kind of been a spark for us," Upton said. "Hopefully the
best result comes out of it and it's not too bad and he's back with it
    soon."

No appeal in Dempster's case though, just lucky timing with off-days... ;)

With off days bookending the series with the Dodgers, I'm assuming the Sox will go Lackey/Lester/Peavy in LA. They can then open their long homestand with Doubront pitching on five days rest next Tuesday against the Orioles.

Correct me if I'm wrong Bill, but Big Papi is the only Red Sox player that was on the team when they last visited San Francisco in 2004 (one of their reg. season interleague stops en route to winning it all was in San Francisco).

The best closer of all time throws one pitch and only one pitch, the cutter. The closer on the Dodgers, Kenley Jensen also throws one pitch and only one pitch, a low 90s mph cutter.

When he used to throw three pitches, one a 100+ mph fastball, he wasn't as successful.

Perhaps more closers should throw only one pitch, maybe the cutter?

Ortiz is the only player remaining from the '04 championship team. Papi, Pedroia, Ellsbury and Lester are the only players remaining from the '07 championship team.

Why calm down? You don't think Mariano Rivera is the best of all time? I think just about everyone would disagree with you.

According to ESPN, the Dodgers have 5,500 tickets available Friday, 7,000+ Saturday and 8,000+ Sunday.

That is about average a few days before a weekend series. Have 50,000 already sold and 6,000 left that will be sold the day of or before.
