MLB 2013 Season

Not in 2011.

Okay you win, not 2011. Adrian Gonzalez was the "best" clutch
hitter on the biggest choke artists in MLB history. Good for him.

But career wise he couldn't carry Ortiz' jock in the clutch. Oh by the way, I don't need to see "numbers".......I have eyes.

It's not about winning. It is about FACTS. Look at the table I posted in a previous post.

The reason I picked 2011 is because that is the one full year they all played together.

Career wise, they aren't that far apart either.

Kershaw is done after 8 innings. He pitched a pretty good game. Not one of his best but pretty good.

8 IP
3 H
8 K
2 BB
1 ER
103 pitches

Lowered his MLB leading ERA even more to 1.88

What was really amazing is that they actually scored for him.

Not about winning? Seriously? I guess that's a smart stance when you're on the Adrian Gonzalez side of the debate. ;)

They ALL sucked in 2011, including Ortiz. That was a disgraceful
September performance by the ENTIRE team.

If they took a poll of MLB players to name the best clutch hitter, I GUARANTEE Ortiz would be a top 3 choice. Why? Because he has the credibility of doing it on the biggest stage NUMEROUS times.

The original post was about who they would rather have up in the 8th inning with a guy at second. I put the numbers up for that scenerio to show that Gonzalez had the best numbers in that situation. We can keep changing things to match what you want to believe, but facts are facts.

As far as a poll goes, you may be correct. Since there is no such poll the point is moot. And again, just because someone thinks one thing does not mean it is true (Heck most players are actually think those magnetic bracelets actually do something.) I rather have the guy that is actually more likely to drive in the run late than the guy most think is most likely to drive in the run late.

Look for yourself. As you can see they are evenly matched. Gonzalez has the edge on average, meaning he will produce more often. Driving in runs they are pretty even. Papi has more RBIs and HRs in many scenarios because he has played much more. If you do the per game or per AB, Gonzalez beats him out in many of those scenarios.

Anyway. I presented the numbers. View them and interpret them as you like. I said everything I am going to say on this topic. You guys can have the last word.

The Dodgers have only one more series against the AL. They play the RedSox on the 23rd through 25th. No matter what happens in that series (even if the Sox sweep them) the Dodgers have already guaranteed at winning record vs the AL and particularly the AL East. Their best winning percentage is vs the AL East than any other division. Their only losing record is against their own division, the NL West. That is the division they are supposed to beat.

9-4 vs AL East
11-6 vs AL

I remember when the Red Sox announcers claimed, correctly, that Jim Rice had a streak of a dozen successive homers that either tied the game or put the Red Sox ahead. Pretty clutch, huh? All but one were in the first or second inning, when he came to bat with the score 0-0. I think Mike Greenwell holds the all time "official record" for game winning RBI. He doesn't really hold the record, just the "official record", because game winning RBI was only recognized as an official statistic of the league for a few years. The league decided that game winning RBI wasn't indicative of anything so meritotious as to be signled out for acclaim. Beyond that, so-called "clutch" hitting statistics are volatile and are never going to be an official statistic for the same reason. Who has the best clutch batting average on the Red Sox this year? Jose Inglesias?

Among the clutchest seasons I have seen a player have at the plate was Bill Buckner in 1985. I don't know if any numbers bear it out, but the Red Sox won a hell of a lot more games with his hundred or so RBI then they did with Jim Rice's. I saw Dewey Evans go from being one of the worst clutch hitters in the league to one of the best. And I saw a mediocre player named Trot Nixon get a slew of big, late inning hits in unlikely situations for a couple of years. I could surely develop definitions of "clutch" to incorporate those at bats if I were so inclined.

Reds take 2 out of 3 from the Padres and pick up 2 games in the standings and are now 5 games back. They really need to start a nice long win streak.
Good thing they play the Cubs and Brewers.

Be careful that's what I thought about the pirates playing Colorado but they got swept. They pay cards next, I hope they can win the series.

Longest streak of an RBI per game on a team for the current year? Ooooooh! That's right up there with Mattingly homering 8 games in a row!

The Red Sox didn't lose any ground to the Rays despite losing 3 out of 4 in KC. However, it would be nice if they ended their road trip on a winning note and take 2 of 3 in Toronto.
