I don't know...I guess I'm the only one around here who thinks Valentine just might turn out to be a very good hire. He may be volatile, he may make you scratch your head sometimes...he may even don a disguise every once in a while! But I think he also may win in Boston.

Just one girl's opinion...

Sandra
I'm with you. Was he the best overall available candidate?? No. Was he the best between who was left?? I say yes.

These players supposedly grumbling about his hire had just better shut their mouths and play for the guy, the way the season ended last year...

This I agree with. After the stench that was September, I don't want to hear as much as a peep out of these prima donnas!

I predict a bounce back year for Crawford and you'll be happy he's there.
1st year on the Big Stage messes with people for a bit, look at Granderson last year vs this year.

I'm not necessarily talking about players underachieving, I'm talking about the undermining and backstabbing that Valentine may face.

Who would you consider the main Leaders on the team at this point ?

Gonzalas was new there last year, he could fill that role now that he's been there awhile, you may not see last year if someone steps up.

Without question Pedroia, and possibly Youkilis.

Ellsbury, Crawford and Gonzalez are more reserved.

I'm sure Gullen won't play full time, but Bell is not a 2B so I don't know where the comparision came from.

Not a comparison. The Marlins had no closer(used the word "had" because Heath Bell has agreed to sign with the Marlins)...and the have a good 2nd basemen in Omar Infante.

I thought Valentine was going to start crying at the start of the Press Conference. That alone is a bad sign.

Jeez here I am defending the Red Sox over and over again...what the heck lol. Marriage has softened me! If I start defending the Long Island Freaks at any point, however, it's time to euthanize me.

That said, I get the emotion from Valentine. He was itching to get back to managing...and not only does he get back to managing, he does he get back into MLB, he lands one of the plum jobs in all of sports...manager of the Boston Red Sox!

There are only three teams in the four major sports where you are guaranteed to get absolutely ANYTHING you need to win. Money is no object for the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies right now...with Texas gaining on the outside. For various reasons teams like the Cubs, Dodgers, Mets and Angels may get back to this status, but right now they are not there.

I'm telling you I think Valentine is going to win...because he's a winner. I know down the road I'm going to look like the biggest idiot or the biggest genius for saying this stuff, but that's how I feel.

Yeah, I get that now. He was genuinely overjoyed in landing his "dream" job, and he showed that during the presser.

A "winner"? Seriously, Sandra? Well, I guess 1,117-1,072 is a "winner" in the truest sense of the word.;)

Trust me, I'll be the first person here saying I was wrong, after the Sox kick the Yankees butts in the ALCS!
:D

Are Bill James and all of Theo's sabermetricians still on staff? If so, their relationship with Valentine will be REALLY interesting!

"Marriage has softened me!"

Hardly, you've only been married for 5 minutes.
