Wow, what a crazy hire by the Red Sox...did not see that one coming! This will ratchet up the Yankee-Red Sox thing for sure. Valentine will make sure of it!

We go from nice guys like Francona and Torre all these years to Girardi and Valentine. Fasten your seat belts!

I'm not interested in a circus (sorry, Uniondale people :D), been there, done that with this team for 30 years. Tito brought stability to this town, something that was always lacking. Valentine is nothing but a clown. Seriously, the Red Sox couldn't have done better than this?!!

Thanks Henry, Werner and Lucchino, you've just set this organization back 20 years to the Butch Hobson days. Have I mentioned how much I HATE this move?!!!

Yeah, I get that Bill. But contrary to what other people are saying here, I think Valentine is a VERY good baseball man. I don't know if they could have done much better...but they certainly could have done different.

I can tell you one thing...nobody will be eating chicken and drinking beer in the clubhouse during games...those days be over. Which is precisely what the powers that be may have been looking for...someone who had the credentials and the you-know-whats to say that...and, more importantly, to make it stick.

I agree, I'm willing to give Bobby V. a chance. Tim Kurkjian from ESPN knows him well and said this in yesterday's column:

Valentine is 61 now. He has matured greatly. He's not as smug and as arrogant as he used to be, but not much else has changed. No one sells a team, and the game, better than Valentine. When he takes on a project, "I have to do the whole thing,'' he said.

Valentine will not allow Josh Beckett to not work in between starts. Valentine will find out how three of Carl Crawford's five tools disappeared last year, and he will make sure he finds them in 2012. He will not allow anyone from Red Sox management, be it John Henry or Tom Werner or Larry Lucchino, to walk into his office and tell him about how the game is played. And no manager in the game will outfox Valentine on any strategic move. In the one year I covered his team, and for the 30 years I have known him, not once have I asked him a question about a move he made in a game for which he didn't have a legitimate answer.

Red Sox Nation, you have one of a kind in Bobby Valentine. I have never met anyone quite like him in baseball. He will make your team better right away. And he'll never be boring.

Over the radio airwaves, this move is going over like a fart in church. I'll say this, Valentine has ZERO room for error in this market right now.

As expected. It is obvious what the fans wanted and obvious what the front office wanted are 2 completely different animals.

Let's see in June when team either make their move or swoon.

Put it this way, I'm about as warm with Valentine being named the Sox manager, as I was when Petey Carroll was named Patriots coach, and even worse when Rick Pitino was named Celtics coach.

Well, at least my favorite Boston head guy (Doc Rivers) just signed a long term extension. :)

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Bobby Valentine will receive a two-year deal to manage the Red Sox.
That's probably the shortest contract I've seen an experienced manager get, and is also probably as long as he will last before he wears out his welcome...

YEP.... Buster Olney said "he will either win you a championship with his smarts or kill your team with his instincts...you never know which will come 1st...."

And that very short contract pretty much matches that comment...

Speculation about the length of Bobby V.'s contract: John Farrell, the current Blue Jays manager is widely regarded to have been Boston's first choice, but Toronto would not release him from his contract. Farrell's current contract just happens to end after the 2013 season.... ;)

Bobby Valentine. What a bad choice . I went to New England during Thanksgiving and stopped and talked to a few friends on the way to Maine. Couldn't find one person who liked him.

I don't know...I guess I'm the only one around here who thinks Valentine just might turn out to be a very good hire. He may be volatile, he may make you scratch your head sometimes...he may even don a disguise every once in a while! But I think he also may win in Boston.

Just one girl's opinion...

I just got a text from someone in Boston watching the Press Conference with Valentine. Notice how he's smiling and enjoying himself? Just wait Bobby.

Bobby is a bandaid...lol!

Wouldn't be surprised if either Bill Buckner or John Valentin joined Valentine's staff.

Tigers FA 2B Ramon Santiago resigned with the Tigers, 2 years, 4M.

Unsure if he will be the Starter or utility man.
He wants the Starting job, but burns out over the long haul, Tigers currently looking for a full time 2B, hopefully someone that can hit over .270 would be nice.
