My fear is that Fielder will report to Spring Training looking all fat and sloppy...wait, never mind. :)

Seriously, my first question was, "Why make this guy a quarter billionaire when they have Victor Martinez?" I had no idea Martinez is going to miss next season with a torn ACL. What happened?

Anyway, anything less than two World Series Championships during the reign of King Fielder (you're no longer a Prince when you're making 200M+) will be considered a failure.

He tore his ACL a few weeks back while working out.
Out for the year.

Just thinking outloud ....

Next year if all goes well (2013) Victor Martinez will be back and they will have Cabrera, Fielder and Martinez 3-4-5 hitters.

Many are trying to figure where they all will play ... Fielder will play 1B, and DH on occasion.

With Cabrera going back to 3B, I'm praying here that Cabrera can still handle 3B, well see.

Anyways, I think I would move some pieces around when Martinez gets hack.

Martinez is a Catcher 1st, so he's got a good arm.
I say they should see if he can play 3B and have Cabrera and Fielder play 1B and DH, with Cabrera DH'ing more than 1B.

Anyways, thats what I would do, Martinez has somewhat bad knees, but still does catch, at least till this mishap, so he can probably play 3B, it's gotta be easier than Catching.

On a positive note, Prince has been VERY durable thru his career so far.

Because he is/was in his 20s, not in his 30s like he will be in the 2nd of that contract. What save his a$$ is that he is in the AL and the have that DH(where fat, no-longer-in-shape baseball players go to rot.... ;-)) rule thingy.

Thats ONE way to look at it.

He's 27 now, so he should be plenty productive for at least 5-6 years, who know from there on out.

Whats your thoughts about Cabrera going back to 3B, think he can handle it ?

LMAO... There was a reason he was moved to the outfield.

That's why no NL teams would go more than 5-6 years.

To the OUTFIELD ?
Didn't know he played the outfield.

He came up as a SS, can he play 2B, better than the 2b men the Tigers have used since Palonco ?

Jimbo...there was 3 things he was known for as a Marlin: hitting, drinking beer and stone hands.

So he'd be no worse that what they have been using at 2B.
I'm more concerned about his arm, as in throwing from third to first.

I REALLY could consider Martinez for 3B when he gets back.

Thats Boris talkin, had he been with another agent, probably would have been 5-6 years.

What did he have to do with it??

More interesting sports news coming out of South Florida, this time in baseball:

Miami Marlins: Bidding opens for sought-after Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes
by: Juan C. Rodriguez January 25th, 2012 | 7:00 PM
Major League Baseball on Wednesday green-lighted Cuban defector Yoenis Cepedes’ free agency, meaning teams finally are able to begin negotiating with a player many anticipate is the most gifted ever to come out of the island nation.

The Marlins and several other clubs are expected to make aggressive runs at the outfielder, who’s built like Bo Jackson. CBS Sports reported Cespedes’ camp is telling teams he prefers not to play in Miami. The Marlins do not believe that, and they continue to think Cespedes is a natural fit. Cespedes wants to maintain his residence in the Dominican Republic. He can’t get any closer to home than Miami.

“I wouldn’t expect him to sign here in the next day, two days, one week, maybe two weeks,” Marlins President David Samson said, on his weekly 790 The Ticket radio show Wednesday. “We’ll see. We’re going to try as hard as we can. That said, there’s other teams — maybe some teams thought they were getting Prince Fielder for four years and then all of a sudden they weren’t.”

Some have questioned if Cespedes’ poor showing during a brief stint in the Dominican winter league might impact his value. According to an American League talent evaluator who saw him play with the Aguilas, the prevailing thought is he’s rusty and 35 at-bats isn’t enough to drastically alter opinions. Cespedes had not played competitively since last spring. He went 5-for-35 with no walks, 10 strikeouts and a homer. Wherever Cespedes signs, it’s likely he’ll open the season in the minors.

Samson has said the club will be aggressive to the point of stupidity in their pursuit of Cespedes.

It's going to extremely difficult for Martinez to return, after missing a year due to injury, and produce anything near his 2011 numbers.

Offhand, I don't see Cabrera performing well at 3B...but I could be wrong. Is Inge still on the roster?

That's my concern. In shape players fade after 35...probably 30 for someone with Fielder's BMI.

According to Baseball Reference his lifetime fielding percentage at 3B is pretty poor at .951

In his two full seasons at third, he had:

17 errors in 2006, 6 fielding, 11 throwing
23 errors in 2007, 14 fielding, 9 throwing

1B seems to be a better fit for him, his lifetime fielding percentage there is .992 :)

I agree, put him back at 1B, tell Fielder to DH and spot start at 1B, ya, that will go over well.

From what I've heard, Fielder isn't a GREAT 1Bmen either, actually Cabrera statistically was better than Fielder

They both suck defensively... But great hitters.
