I agree, put him back at 1B, tell Fielder to DH and spot start at 1B, ya, that will go over well.

From what I've heard, Fielder isn't a GREAT 1Bmen either, actually Cabrera statistically was better than Fielder
And what happens in '13 and '14 when V-Mart returns you will have essentially 3 DHs...

Well, I mentioned in a few post earlier what I would do.

Seeing Martinez is a Catcher, he's got a good arm, I would see if he can play 3B and have Cabrera and Fielder DH and 1B platoon, as long as both bats are in the lineup.

NESN has yet to announce it, but an important acquisition was made. Former ESPN AccuScore anchor Jenny Dell will replace Heidi Watney as Red Sox in-game reporter, according to The Boston Globe.

I'm sure Varitek hopes he's back!

Just heard that if Martinez did not get injured, Prince would now be a Dodger. He was just about the accept a 7 year front-loaded deal with the Dodgers with a 3rd year player opt out option.

I really wish the Tigers deal would have been a short term one instead of the 9 year deal, but oh well, not my money.

Now THAT would have been a smarter deal.

I think Illitch had to go 8 or 9 to get him.
Not sure if a 7 year would have got him to Detroit.
It was enough in LA with a team in ownership transition and financial troubles. Then again, he is good friends with Kemp.

It would have been nice to have Fielder Kemp and Ethier in the middle of that lineup. That would have been one potent trio.

I fail to see how a 7-year ~$160M guaranteed contract is better than a 9-year $214M guaranteed contract, even if you don't consider that his body type tends to age poorly.

Because it is loaded at the front of the contract...where more than likely he will be the most productive AND when he starts stinking up the joint...after 3 or 4 years, you can dump his a$$ with little on your cap.

Unless I've missed it, there is no cap in baseball. And, contracts in baseball are guaranteed. There would have been be a player opt-out clause in the Dodger offer, but if his body does break down why would he opt out??

Lastly, the Dodger offer was supposedly not extremely front loaded:

The Dodgers' first offer was said to have called for an average salary of about $26 million for the first four years and something in the low $20-million-range in the next three years.
