"Red Sox become first team to open 0-5 while starting five pitchers who have been Cy Young award candidates within the last four seasons."
Still early, I know, but those pitiful Pirates are looking good so far. Neil Walker hit HR #2 to lead the Pirates over the Cards 3-1. Buccos are 2 for 2 in series wins, and on the road.
Won't last long.
Sounds strange with a 162 game season, but no team has ever started 0-5 and advanced to the World Series.

Skewed stat because so few teams start out 0-5 period.

Less than one a year on average, and also most were before more postseason opportunites were created by splitting into multiple divisions and adding the wildcard...In major league history, which dates to 1871, 110 teams have started a season 0-5. Just two of those 110 went on to make the postseason, less than two percent. Those two teams were the 1974 Pirates and 1995 Reds, both of whom actually started their seasons 0-6. Thirty-nine teams extended their season-opening losing streaks to seven games. Only one of those clubs finished as high as third place.
Huh?? I think you mean the Rays.Interesting stat of the day:
The Red Sox are the first team since 1905 to begin a season 0-5 after having the best record in the league the year previous.
The only other team in 1904-1905 to accomplish this odd feat? The Boston Red Sox.
Huh?? I think you mean the Rays.
