MLB 2011 Season

I get Gonzo (who I think is in the top 5 MLB players), but you're saying that Pedroia is a "good" hitter because he hits behind Ellsbury??

No doubt, Ellsbury is having a breakout season, but Pedroia has been doing this for FIVE years now. If anything, Ellsbury is lucky to be hitting in front of two GREAT hitters!
No. I was talking about him batting clean-up. So he was hitting between Gonzo and Papi

...Could Millwood be worse?

I guess we'll never know. After going 5-1 at Pawtucket, The Red Sox granted him his release on August 6th and he was signed by Colorado on August 8th.

On June 20th, Millwood passed on his opportunity to opt out of his Red Sox contract if he was not pitching for them in the majors by then in exchange for an informal agreement that if a better opportunity presented itself, the Red Sox would let him take it. Colorado offered Millwood a major league contract and an immediate spot in its rotation, so that's where he went. He started against Cincinnatti a couple of days ago, giving up just three hits and one walk in seven innings. Unfortunately, those three hits were solo homers and so he was tagged with a 3-2 loss. Still, Lackey would have to throw shutouts in each and every one of his remaining nine starts to approach Millwood's current 3.86 ERA

The regular season ends on a Wednesday, September 28th. Is that something new?

Wakefield failed again in his bid for his 200th career win, giving up five runs, four earned, in a 94 pitch, complete game loss. He appears to have eight starts remaining this season. While the Red Sox have four more off days, they usually don't drop out their fifth starter.

If they begin next season with the personnel they have, Wakefield will be their eighth starter and will not become a regular member of their rotation until about mid June.

I noticed this the other day when I was looking at the Sox schedule. IIRC, MLB wanted the postseason wrapped up by Halloween, so they moved the end of the regular season back four days (by having fewer off days??).

If a division or wildcard race comes down to the final evening, this move could benefit MLB, by not having to go head-to-head with the NFL.

BTW, the postseason (for three of the four series) will now start on Saturday.

News and notes from tonight's biggest games...

7:00 PM San Franscisco at Atlanta - The Giants first visit to Atlanta since their October victory there that sent them to the World Series. Big series, as the Braves are four games up on the Giants in the wild card.

7:00 PM St Louis at Pittsburgh - After breaking his wrist and missing 15 minutes of action, Albert Pujols now leads the NL with 29 home runs, and is on the verge of his 11th straight 30 homer season. The Pirates' season is crumbling before our eyes.

8:00 PM NY Yankees at Kansas City - AJ Burnett goes for his first victory EVER in August as a Yankee. Jeesh. Some are saying Burnett can wind up being the odd man out in the Yankee rotation, as there are six starting pitchers, but I don't see it. He can't go to the minors, can't go to the bullpen...might as well keep him in the rotation. The Yankees can tie for first with a victory.

8:00 PM LA Dodgers at Milwaukee - The Brew crew returns home and is 44-15 at Miller Park this season. Wow. Randy Wolf faces the Dodgers, his former team.

10:00 PM Texas - LA Angels - Beginning with this series, will face each other seven times over the next two weeks. Could decide the division. Rangers are rolling, Angels are reeling. Garrett Richards making his second major league start for the Cali boys, after being pounded by the Yankees last week. Alexi Ogando, starting for Texas, was pounded by Seattle last week.

Enjoy!

Odd man out of the Rotation ?

Do they even HAVE a rotation ?

They have Sabathia and Nova and pray for rain ?

LOL you should stick to your happy zone, Jimbo, the AL Central. You're getting a little out of your league here.

Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia have been very good number four and five starters, and Ivan SuperNova has done a really good job for a kid.

Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett have been the problems, but Hughes did have velocity in his last start...which leaves America's most overpaid pie clown as the most non-contributing of them all.

If your happy with slightly above .500 pitchers, thats fine, but the yankees with all they have money and player wise should not settle for that type of pitcher.

Yep. The Yankees and Red Sox 4th and 5th starters should be 17-5 and 3.14 because of "all the money they have". ;)

They should just BUY better pitchers ....
Thats what they DO afterall ....

Sandra just said that the yankees should have the Mariners Closer closing for them soon .....

Hows THAT happen ? MONEY...

Here's a novel thought: Maybe other teams should SPEND THE MONEY THAT THEY POCKET from teams paying the luxury tax, instead of bitching what teams like the Red Sox and Yankees spend!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, baseball needs a salary floor even more than they need a salary cap!

I AGREE with you, however MY team doesn't get the mega payment from the yanks and Sox.

If they are stupid enough to have payrolls over 200M, thats THIER fault if they get a TAX on top of it.
I'm sure it wasn't the PLAYERS that voted for a Luxury tax.

I know, the Tigers actually try to field a compepitive team! :)

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for a dozen or so teams.

Well, this veered far off track. My original point was (and still is) that the Yankees have six starters fighting for five positions (not six hall of famers, just six adequate pitchers), and some thought last night was a big start for Burnett. He was shaky in the fifth, but he won for the first time in August as a Yankee.

News and notes from tonight's notable games...

7:00 PM St Louis at Pittsburgh - Jerry Meals umpiring behind home plate...the same ump who made the ridiculous safe call in the 19th inning in Atlanta. That loss started Pittsburgh on their 16 losses in 20 games slide. Jeff Karstens, tonight's starter, was also the starter in that 19th inning loss. Ryan Doumit went 4 for 4 last night.

7:00 PM Arizona at Philadelphia - Battle of first place teams...one likely, one very unlikely. Roy Halladay on the bump against rookie Josh Collmenter...doesn't seem like a fair fight, but that's why you play the game.

7:00 PM San Francisco at Atlanta - Huge game winning hit with two outs in the ninth, the bases loaded and a full count by NL rookie of the year favorite Freddie Freeman last night against Brian Shoepolishbeard. Randall Delgado called up to take Tommy Hanson's place tonight in the rotation for Atlanta. Jonathan Sancez needs to prove he still belongs in the Giants' rotation.

8:00 PM NY Yankees at Kansas City - Super Nova has been on a roll, but the Kaufman boys gave him his worst loss, roughing him up badly back in May. Danny Duffy making his first start ever against the Yankees...these are the kind of guys who tend to give the Bombers problems.

8:00 PM Cleveland at Chi White Sox - Big week for the rock and rollers, playing the team chasing them (White Sox) and the team they're chasing (Tigers). Ubaldo Jimenez facing a strong lineup tonight. Local Lakewood legend Gavin Floyd on the hill for the Hawk Harrelsons.

8:00 PM LA Dodgers at Milwaukee - Wild game last night...Dodgers hit into a bunch of double plays and a triple play too. Ted Lilly pitched a very strong game for the Dodgers last night but was unlucky. Yovani Gallardo has been pitching incredibly at Miller Park.

10:00 PM Texas at LA Angels - The other Rangers looking to blow the AL West race wide open this week. Four hits for Ian Kinsler last night. Last night's Angels starter Garrett Richards left the game in the first with an injury, putting a huge strain on the Angles bullpen for the rest of the series. Jimmy Chitwood takes the mound tonight.

Enjoy!

Karstens should call a fastball right at gonad height, and have Doumit step out of the way the last second. Maybe old Jerry won't be in such a hurry to go home the next 19 inning game he calls. ;)

Red Sox win the opener of their doubleheader against the Rays, 3-1. Lester/Bard/Papelbon were lights out, and Jacoby Ellsbury had the big hit..... a three run homer off tough luck loser James Shields.

Jeff Niemann goes against Erik Bedard in the nightcap this evening.

This has been Lilly's story all year

Nice line by Bedard tonight: 6 innings, 102 pitches, 6 strikeouts, no walks. One earned run, two more unearned by virtue of a Lowrie error. If he arm doesn't crap out, he may become the game three starter.
