The problem was, V-Mart's numbers are worth twice as much money when they come from a catcher as when they come from a first baseman or DH, but the Red Sox weren't sold on using him as a catcher whereas some other teams were willing to, making him worth more to them than to the Red Sox. If the Red Sox resigned him, then they'd have to forego the production of either Gonzales or Ortiz.

Well, in Detroit he's been a VERY GOOD DH and split time catcher, Avilla catching alot more than Victor, but thats the way it was planned from the beginning and working out very well, with Avilla having a Break Out season and Victor playing an instrumental part of the team as well.

Thank you Red Sox for letting him go !

Yeah, I just looked up Avila's numbers and he has been a real horse behind the plate this year. V-Mart had a couple of pathetic caught stealing percentages with the Red Sox, but that can come from being Wakefield's designated catcher. The combined steals and caught stealing against Varitek and Saltalamacchia this year are about proportional to what V-mart had for the Red Sox last year.

Don't you just hate when this happens??

With two outs, Holliday called time in left field and started toward the dugout holding his ear. Cardinals trainer Barry Weinberg met Holliday and tried to help.

"He had a moth fly into his ear, deep into his ear. I don't even know what happened to it," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said moments after his team's 2-1 loss.

Team spokesman Brian Bartow said Holliday was taken into a dark room and trainers put a light by his ear, trying to lure the insect out. That didn't work, so they used a utensil to get the moth, which was still alive, out of Holliday's ear.

Players Who Cleared Waivers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 22 at 12:46pm CST]
This is a running list of players who have cleared waivers, based on published reports. Once a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any team (barring a no-trade clause). This list can always be found in the sidebar under MLBTR Features. Player names are linked to the source articles, the majority of which came from ESPN's Buster Olney.
Updated 8-22-11 at 12:46pm
  • David DeJesus, Athletics - DeJesus has had a rough year but could at least be useful against right-handed pitching.
  • Hideki Matsui, Athletics - The Athletics have several waiver trade candidates, and Matsui's hot second half and low salary (owed less than $2MM the rest of the season) could make him a popular target.
  • Jason Bay, Mets - With Bay being owed at least $38.8MM through 2013, this was expected. It's only been 12 games, but Bay is at least having his first good month of 2011.
  • D.J. Carrasco, Mets - The Mets signed Carrasco to a two-year deal in December - their biggest acquisition of the offseason - but optioned him to Triple-A in April. He stayed there until mid-June.
  • Willie Harris, Mets - The versatile Harris has less than $200K left on his contract.
  • Angel Pagan, Mets - It's been a dismal year for Pagan, who may be in line for a non-tender after the season.
  • Chris Capuano, Mets - Capuano owns a 3.74 SIERA as of August 14th and earns only $1.5MM plus incentives, so it's hard to see why a few teams didn't place claims.
  • Bronson Arroyo, Reds - His peripheral stats haven't changed much, but Arroyo has a 5.31 ERA as of August 15th. $15MM of his $35MM contract is deferred through 2021 without interest. The deferrals are voided if he's traded, however. At any rate, expect Arroyo to stay put.
  • Carlos Lee, Astros - No surprise here, as the 35-year-old is hitting .263/.321/.417 and is owed almost $23MM through next year. El Caballo's ten-and-five rights kick in after the season.
  • Alfonso Soriano, Cubs - This one was also obvious. SI's Jon Heyman notes on Twitter that the Cubs are willing to pay a "major, major chunk" of the $58.35MM owed to the left fielder through 2014.
  • Carlos Zambrano, Cubs - Zambrano cleared waivers prior to being placed on the disqualified list. He has a short fuse, lousy stats, and over $22MM remaining on his contract through next year.
  • Bruce Chen, Royals - Chen has his moments, but it's not surprising to see him clear waivers.
  • Rodrigo Lopez, Cubs - Same goes for Lopez.
  • Jason Vargas, Mariners - Like many of the starters here, Vargas' fastball wouldn't break a window. But he has less than a million bucks left on his contract this year and is under team control through 2013. He'd fit nicely at the back end of several rotations.
  • Chien-Ming Wang, Nationals - His three starts this season were his first in over two years, so it's understandable that contenders wouldn't jump to claim him.
  • Tom Gorzelanny, Nationals - Booted to the bullpen last month, the 29-year-old flyballing southpaw has posted strong strikeout rates in recent years but can't hold a rotation job.
  • Ted Lilly, Dodgers - He always has strong strikeout-to-walk numbers, but is prone to the longball. With over 82% of his $33MM contract remaining ($27MM+), it's no surprise he cleared waivers.
  • Johnny Damon, Rays - Damon blocked an August trade last summer and 12 months later he's a candidate to be traded once again.

Sat down to watch the Dodgers/Cardinals play tonight. This game got out of hand real fast. 5-0 in the top of the first. 8-0 now in the bottom of the 4th. I'm gonna look for something else to watch.

The good news for the Red Sox tonight is, since Lackey has already thrown 60 pitches through just three innings, they'll have to take him out after five.

The Red Sox presently have two #1 starters and four very nice #5 starters. Man, do they need Buchholz back.

Hmmm, the Tigers really have needed a # 5 starter all year ....
A 3 and 4 as well. :)

This has absolutely nothing to do with MLB , but the story being told in the Little League World Series by that Pennsylvania team and their fans is amazing.

I like the Little League stories that emerge almost every year about the 6'2" kid with the deep voice and dark stubble...

The Reds and Marlins are going to play a doubleheader today due to the hurricane coming in. The Reds will end up with 2 days off this week.

Yeah...they had planned that earlier in the week because of the uncertainty of Friday's weather. I may try to get out earlier due "cough, cough" not feeling well ....;):D

I see that Jared Weaver re-upped with the Angels for five years and $85 million, which is a lot like John Lackey signing with the Red Sox for 5 years for $88 million, except that Weaver is 3 years younger than Lackey was, and Weaver had been more durable in his prior three years, not missing a start, and Weaver is a two-time all-star, whereas Lackey is a no-time all-star, and Weaver had much better stats over his prior three seasons than Lackey did...

Gulp....

Jim Thome's future may have been determined by 2 walkoffs yesterday, by Choo & Bourjos. Without both, Indians would have 1st dibs on waivers. Now, theoretically, the White Sox could claim Thome and Kubel and block the Indians from getting both.

Another injury hamstrings Indians....

Supposedly, during pregame batting cage warm-ups, our hottest player, Sin Soo Choo tweaked something and was a late scratch from today's lineup. When it rains, it pours. You hate to see all these injuries when you're trying to compete for a playoff push. :(

The current leader in the National League Cy Young race is...not a member of the Philadelphia Phillies!

His name is Ian Kennedy.

Sandra

The current MLB MVP leader is not a member of the NY Yankees or Boston Redsox.

His name is Justin Verlander.

His club is 18-0 when he pitches and they score 3 or more runs. Without him, the Tigers don't make the playoffs. Say that about any other person on any other team.

Weaver wasn't going to be a free-agent until after this season. Angels were smart (and lucky) to lock him up now because he loves playing in SoCal and got the hometown discount...

He would have gotten much more on the free market.

I agree. I am definitely biased as a Tiger's fan but I don't think there is another player in the league that is more valuable to their team. No pitcher has won the AL MVP since Clemens and Verlander has better numbers than he did.
