MLB 2010 Season

That Mets/Giants game is a perfect illustration of why Selig did the right thing by not overturning the bad call by Joyce in Gallaraga's imperfect game. If he would have set that precedent a lot of people would have been up in arms screaming for Selig to turn that Mets victory into a Giants victory, and it would have gotten worse from there.

Strasmas report: Nationals win 8-5. Strasburg is lavishly praised by ESPN.com for producing what is, statistically, his least overwhelming "line" of his career.

CINCINNATI -- For his latest feat, Stephen Strasburg tamed the NL's top offense on its own turf.

Washington's hard-throwing rookie contained the Cincinnati Reds' high-scoring lineup Wednesday night, and a slumping Nationals offense finally came around behind Cristian Guzman's homer, pulling away to an 8-5 victory.

A day after he turned 22, Strasburg (5-2) pitched beyond his years again, passing one of his toughest tests.

The Reds lead the league in batting average, hits and RBIs. They can manhandle pitchers at homer-friendly Great American Ball Park, where even a tiny mistake often ends up in the seats.

Strasburg struck out seven and gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings, outdoing the Reds' top pitcher.

If he had average run support every game, and average relief performance, he would be 9-0 right now. With probably 12 starts left, I predict he will finish well into the top half dozen in the Cy Young race.

WHAT ?
I thought I heard that they had already renamed it to the Cy Strasburg award.

Billingsley pitched a complete game shutout. The main reason why he was able to do so....NO JOE TORRE.

Mattingly as a manager is 1-0 with a bullpen that is rested and a starter that pitched the whole game (something Torre would never let happen).

Replay help for the umps is long overdue in MLB.

Tigers Have 'Serious' Interest In Dan Haren

Tigers Have 'Serious' Interest In Dan Haren
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 22 at 2:08pm CST]

The Diamondbacks are exchanging names with teams interested in Dan Haren and the Detroit Tigers are among the clubs with 'serious' interest in the right-hander, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (all Twitter links). The Tigers' interest is not surprising, since they need rotation help, have three high-priced pitchers coming off the books next season and scouted Haren (along with the Phillies) last night.

Haren can block deals to a dozen teams, but would consider allowing a trade, depending on the situation. The Cardinals and Phillies are among the teams interested in Haren. He won't come cheap, but as one MLB official explained to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark, Haren's price may be dropping.

"[The D'Backs are] starting to get more reasonable," the official said. "Before, they were asking for two starting pitchers off your major league roster. Now they're talking prospects, so I think they've gotten realistic. I definitely think he's moving now."

Haren makes $12.75MM in 2011 and 2012, and there's a $3.5MM buyout for a $15.5MM option in 2013.

John Lackey has a no-hitter through six for the Red Sox, and they lead Seattle 6-1. The one Seattle run came on a walk, stolen base, groundout and a passed ball by third string catcher Pat Cash.

I bet major league baseball has already set a record for no hitters through six innings this season.

Kuroda pitching the same game as Billingsley did. So far through 8 innings with the same number of pitches and a 2-0 lead. The one difference, Torre is managing today. That means, Kuroda comes out in the 9th no matter what. Now lets hope the bullpen doesn't blow it.

Lost the no hitter with 2 outs in the 8th

Broken up by .189 hitting, former Red Sox player (and Tim Wakefield caddy?) Josh Bard. Maybe someone with a sophisticated data base scouring program can find out how many late-game no-hitters are broken up by former teammates.

Then, gas man Papelbon lets in two inherited runners and one of his own to blow a three run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Searching ths forum for, "Papelbon is a blown save waiting to happen" will locate multiple posts. He will not be the closer next year.

Of course if Torre had left Kuroda in and he would have blown the ninth inning, people (not necessarily you) would have been screaming about Torre pulling a Grady Little and not using his bullpen. Everybody is an expert the morning after. ;)

Compliments of LeBron and Bosh the PLAYER telling the team where he will play IS HERE .....

Looks like Roy Oswalt is part of the beginning of this trend as well.

It use to be that the TEAM would decide if they wanted you, not anymore.

Roy Oswalt has decided that he will play for the Cards or no one else.

Yes, we've had players with No trade clauses for quit awhile, but it's getting ridiculous now.

I bet if the Phils and Yanks come calling he'll OK them as well.

God forbid a player gets traded to a team that is NOT going to the WS.

What a season Josh Johnson is having. IF he can continues having the season he is having, he will still the Cy Young away from the Rookies' Jimenez. He has allowed only 1 earned run in his 12 of his last 13 starts and could possibly the very best pitcher in baseball right now. He has one of the lowest ERAs after his 1st 20 starts in the history of MLB at 1.67.

Who? Sounds like NASCAR driver. How come no one has heard of this guy outside Baseball elites and Floridians? ;)

LOL!! I assure you...IF he would have remotely close to be on the trade market...he would have gotten just as much attention as Lee, Oswald(more then him for sure) and Roy Halladay.

MIAMI -- Other pitchers have had more fanfare and more recognition, but none of them have had the consistency and the streaks that Josh Johnson is enjoying this season.

The 26-year-old Marlins ace continues to amaze and flirt with benchmarks that don't come along very often.

Although he didn't get the victory, Johnson ran his string of starts of working at least six innings while allowing no more than two runs to 13 consecutive games. It's the longest such stretch since Greg Maddux also had 13 in 1995.

You have to go back to Mike Scott in 1986 to find the last pitcher with 14.

The way Johnson -- who is 10-3 with an MLB-best 1.61 ERA -- has performed all season, an argument can be made that no pitcher in the big leagues has been better.

Fact is Torre's teams are always in the top of most innings pitched by the bullpens.

I watch the Dodgers every day and see him pull starters dominating games, making minimal pitches, with a lead, and see an overused relief pitcher blow it the next inning.

I listen or watch the broadcast of the opposing teams and listen to them criticize pitchers like Kershaw and Billingsley for not being able to go deep into games. They just look at the average innings pitched per start and don't realize it is not a matter of them not BEING ABLE to go deep into games; it is a matter of Torre not LETTING them go deep into games.
