MLB 2009 Season

Amazing...! The Blue Jays just finished getting swept by the Marlins IN Toronto over the past weekend...then SWEEP the Phillies IN Philadelphia.....! How crazy is that?!

Victor Martinez over Joe Mauer? Maybe you should follow your own advice.

Go back to my original statement on this position. I said I could understand Mauer, but was flabergasted that Victor was in 5th place among the catchers behind Varitek, Posada and Saltalmacchia, none of which should be selected over Victor, especially Varitek!http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?player_id=457454

Don't even get him started on "Cleveland teams";)

I would be curious though to know on what crack are you on that you would think Victor Martinez is better or having a better season than Joe Mauer.....;):p

Like I said, I can understand why Mauer is leading over V-Mart, but the others! Don't even get me started. Victor has no business being in 5th place! He is the 2nd best catcher in the AL.

And if you really want me to make a case for Vic to be #1, I can do that. V-Mart has been playing the whole season and Mauer was injured to start the season. Victor has 100 more at-bats than Mauer (260 to 160), which makes what Victor is doing all the more special. After 260 at bats, Victor is batting .345 with 50 RBI's which is the most among catchers. :p

Varitek, is a much much(much) better defensive catcher than Martinez, matter of fact he(Martinez) isn't even the best catcher on his own team. Defense is half the game, unless your a chic and only "dig offense".

That's highly debatable. As a matter of fact, it's completely incorrect. The only reason Vic is getting more breaks from catching and playing more 1B this year is to help preserve his body. He's coming off an injury from last year and offensively, he's the best thing we've got right now, so we're trying to decrease the toll that catching takes on his body. When Vic is behind the plate, he has a higher throw-out rate than Kelly Shoppach.

As for offense, the side of ball you're completely ignoring, well Victor and Varitek aren't even in the same league....

Varitek: .224 BA, .796 OPS, 25 RBI, 10 HR

Vic: .345 BA, .974 OPS, 50 RBI, 11 HR

Tell me again, which catcher deserves to be in 2nd place and who deserves to be in 5th???

Here is my ballot.

AL

1b- Kevin Youkilis
2b- Dustin Pedroia
SS- Jason Bartlett
3b- Evan Longoria
OF- Jason Bay
OF- Torii Hunter
OF- Ichiro Suzuki
C- JASON VARITEK

I don't care if fans don't like that I put 4 Red Sox on the team, If this is going to decide if the world series could start at Fenway, I don't want to leave it up to guys on last place teams who don't really have a position.

NL or high AAA

1b- Albert Pujols
2b- Chase Utley
SS- Hanley Rameriz
3b- Chipper Jones
OF- Raul Ibanez
OF- Matt Kemp
OF- Corey Hart
C - Brian McCann

That's a dumb way to look at it. Wouldn't you want to try and generate the very best lineup possible for the AL? Tell me, who would you want up to bat in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on 3rd to decide the All-Star game? By your selection, it's possible that Varitek is that man instead of Victor Martinez.

And by your train of thought, if you're trying to stack the deck in favor of the AL, wouldn't you want to select the worst in the NL?

PS, if Varitek is such an awesome defensive catcher, hows come he can't catch knuckle-balls?!

I find it funny that your "High AAA" team has better players than your AL team at most of the positions.

The only position that the NL is better at on my list is 1st, and not by that much.

Edit: And catcher, but since it is a big game obviously Josh Beckett would be pitching, so I'd want Varitek to catch.

Oh Please.

Pujols is many many times better than Youkilis. To say he is barely better than Youk demonstrates that your bias is blinding you. Not only is Pujols the best 1st baseman currently playing and the best player in baseball currentl, he will go down (as long as his career is not cut short) as one of the best players of all time. Youk won't even come close to matching that.

Utley is hands down better than Pedroia (don't get me started on why he should not have won the MVP). I can pick several players in both the NL and AL that I would take over the most over rated one year wonder, Pedroia.

Barlett has not even come close to matching Ramirez

I would give the edge to the NL on your outfield picks as well.

The ONLY position in which the AL is better from your picks is 3rd.

And catcher if Hart was less bias and voted for Mauer or Victor instead of Varitek.

I agree. I was just going by his picks. McCann is not the best NL catcher either. In fact the stud NL catchers are all having poor years (Martin probably being the worst of all).

Victor is having an amazing year and deserves to be ahead of those guys.

Mauer was injured to start the season, had NO SPRING TRAINING. Mauer has almost BETTER numbers with 100 less abats in almost all offensive stats.

Mauer IS the best catcher in baseball and top 10 player in ALL of baseball. Victor is very good, but NOT in that zip code.

Vic had a .400+ batting average after 160 games too. Just saying.....

I am a die hard Red Sox fan, and love to watch Youk, Pedroia, and Varitek. They are all great ball players. However, I agree with you completely. Youk is no where near being in the same league as Pujols, Utley is definitely better than Pedroia, and anyone that would vote for Varitek over Mauer or Martinez is obviously watching different ball games than I am....

Yes it was hyperbole on my part only to point out someones hypocrisy. (With Youk and Tek)

But there is no way someone is going to tell me that Utley is better than Pedroia. I watch them both almost every day, it is close but I will take Dustin.
