Hopper vs Genie, Will I Be Sorry?

My proposed setup would be 1 Genie 2 Minis, how does the Genie handle recording conflicts?
if you are watching TV when a conflict happens, it will ask you what to do. If you are not home, the DVR will rely on your priority list to cancel and reschedule the show will lower propriety. The DVR will then try to catch a re-air of the cancelled show and record. You can also try to catch the miss show via VOD.

Thanks for the answers. It looks like there will be some trade offs and additional out of pocket for a sling box and possibly a genie go. But at least I know what to expect.

Still haven't turned in the bad Hopper. Two things I don't like about the competition is it looks like if your main box goes out, no tv. Also Comcast only offers one HD Channel for each of its premium channels. At least Dish allows you to have two Hoppers.

One more thing, if I do stay with Dish and buy a External Hard Drive, is there a monthly fee for it? And I am unclear about the EHD. Can TV be stored on both the Hopper and EHD simultaneously? Does the EHD only work on the Hopper or can I use it say, on a PC ?

one or the other, not both.

With my Hopper with sling I can watch live TV or recorded DVR items where ever I have an internet connection. But I can also transfer recorded items to my iPad to watch when there is not an internet connection, such as on a plane or camping. Wouldn't I need both a sling box and a Genie go if I want to get close to this same type of functionality?

No monthly fee.
Recordings are stored on either the Hopper or EHD not both.
The EHD is tied to your account. If you use it on a PC it has to be formatted.

No

Items can be transferred between the Hopper and the EHD, but once on the EHD you can watch directly from there, even from a Joey.

It will not work on a PC.

Don't know what you mean about that. Formatting to me means erasing everything.

I have the genie setup, and my dvr broke, but I was still able to use my other 3 receivers. Not sure if they still have the independent receivers, but u could always ask for at least one of those models. That way u would be able to have one TV while waiting for a replacement genie...

with the genie, if your genie goes out (unplugged, disconnected, something like that) then your mini's will be out too, as they require ALL their information from the genie. if the genie is defective in some ways, its possible that the mini's may still work. if you have a standalone HD box or HDDVR from the H-XX or HR-XX then they will not be impacted if the genie goes out, simply if the satellite reception does. as far as watching D* on other devices, the GenieGo lets you watch material that is already recorded on your genie via streaming, or you can use it to download the recording to your device for offline viewing. to download recordings i believe your device has to be on the home network of your geniego (haven't tried VPNing though haha). you can also watch alot of the VOD and live TV content through the D* app, again via streaming.

apparently AT&T has a $200 (x12 months) bundle for 4x cell phones w/ 10 gig, internet, and D* (Genie +3 mini). sounds like a hell of a deal to me, but haven't read the fine print.

then just get the GenieGo. With the GenieGo you can watch your playlist "live" or by downloading to or device. If your want to watch LIVE TV, you can use the EveryWhere platform or set the shoe to record first then pull it from the playlist using the GenieGo

Yep, EHD with Dish to save recordings and especially if the box starts acting funny because all HDD's will fail, especially those internal HDD's in DVR's because we use them so much and for multiple tuners and this does take its toll. I have taken pro-active action and saved recordings before the internal HDD dies.

Further, with Dish, all your timers and some other settings (like custom guide settings) are save to the remote, and when you get the replacement Hopper, all that timer and other settings data is transferred to the replacement Hopper. I've used it twice (once for an upgrade to Hopper with Sling and once for a family member who also upgraded to HWS) and it is so NICE to to have to recreate, in my case, OVER 100 timers.
