Hi,

I'm considering switching to Direct TV from Dish Network but have a few concerns.

Mainly whether I can make it work without too much hassle / cost up at my cabin by simply hauling a receiver from home and connecting it
when I arrive as I've been accustomed to this convenience for years.

I realize at a minimum I'll need to buy a new Dish on Ebay etc., aim the dish (which I've done in the past for both Direct & Dish).

Quick research indicates that:
The Genie Minis only work with the Genie in same system because they have no tuner.
A Standard HD Receiver will cost me $99.
Genie Minis are somewhat slow and buggy.

Questions:
If I opted for 1 Genie, 2 Mini's and 1 Standard HD Receiver (assuming h25), If I unplug the Standard
box from the system, will that make the other 3 locations not function until I plug the standard box back in?
(I read somewhere that the new equipment senses something missing etc. and does this is, it True or False)?
Edit: Learned every unused port in house must have a proper terminator installed so if I'm guessing if I pick
up a terminator, I could unplug the standard box, go to the Multi switch, install the terminator then the other
3 locations in house would function properly with
1 receiver temporarily removed?

Will a Standard HD receiver, while within a Genie 4 TV setup, function just like a Genie Mini
(or is it dumbed down to a stand alone tuner & not able to record & utilize all functions of the Genie Mini)?
Edit: found the specs on Direct TV site and it's merely an HD receiver.

Would I need to consider any additional equipment for a single line into my cabin other than:
-Compatible Dish properly pointed.
-Proper cable w/ approved connectors, (is rg6 sufficient)?

Is it likely that Direct TV will allow me to upgrade the 1 receiver if I order? I read a lot about people being sold by
sales on all minis as it seems they want to sway people in that direction.

Sorry for so many questions but it's sounding like a lot has changed since I went through this the past 2 times
so I'm trying to evaluate whether it's worth it to switch at this time.

Any input is appreciated.

I am not a DTV expert by any means, but. If I try to answer and I am wrong be assured I will be corrected. I just ordered and yes they sway you to all clients . I asked for and paid for a HR-24/lease 199. I insisted. I wanted more tuners. Here's were some guessing comes in. The Gene can be used with the other receiver so it works together. I believe you can make it work separately. If so that solves your problem. I am not sure if there is a setting available to you to say toggle from on the Gene system to not on the Gene system. I am also unclear if DTV lets you use your receiver for a tailgater or cabin/RV. I think if it has a address it has to have a separate account. So watch your verbiage. Peace.

Your Welcome,

Should

Look at the programming available from Dish compared to DIRECTV (you can access the Guide at the DIRECTV homepage) and decide from there...
