Paterno just doesn't get it. Look at the statement he made yesterday morning.

Penn State Nittany Lions' Joe Paterno to retire at end of season - ESPN

While everyone is learning that more children were victimized by this monster, here's Paterno telling the Board of Trustees what to do (or in this case not do). It's all about him and his legacy. I'd like to think that all of this would have taught him a life lesson, but I think he's too far down the road of his own cult of personality to learn life lessons.
and his arrogance was finally the end of him. if he doesn't make this announcement yesterday, i truly believe he at least coaches this weekend. but he pushed it by dictating what the board was going to do. either way the right thing happened and thats him being fired.

Here's a very real question. Penn State is an absolute madhouse right now. Every senior official with any knowledge of this scandal will and should be fired. Celebrating during pep rally's and carrying on as if nothing happened would be insensitive. In the grande scheme of things, Football is NOT important compared to the stakes at hand.

Should Penn State go ahead and just cancel the rest of the season?
the NCAA won't do that. too much $$$$ would be lost if this game isn't played. it would be nice if they did cancel the game. it would show us where their priorities stand. but i doubt they'll do this

true. just don't be shocked when the NCAA does nothing.

Yeah, this is totally different from other violations. I don't know what the NCAA's jurisdiction is here...and I honestly don't even care right now.

This is about bringing criminals to justice, and exposing those who did nothing to stop the criminals.

At the end of the day he didn't do the crime...his only fault and I'm sure there are many many more that are at fault for not doing enough if he knew just a fraction of what was going on but its hard to make the right decisions that others think you should make. Him being fired will only kill him.. I bet he doesn't live another 2 years after this from all the stress it will create on him and his family.
you think JoePa didn't know what was going on at all????? come on now.... this guy IS Pen State! I'm sure he even knew how many mosquitoes were flying around in the building. (exaggeration of course but you get the point. )

If you could stomach reading the Grand Jury report you would see the testimony of a current PSU assistant coach, then grad assistant, Mike McQueary. There has to be something to happen to this guy too...

one of the worse things i've ever read :( maybe the worse. there has been no report about this guy being fired yet? what he did or did not do is way worse then joe's enabling here.

From Jay Glazer: How is that gutless McGraevy still employed? How do you see a child being raped and not stop it? Instead he runs away to call his daddy???

You seem like a nice guy, dvr, but this post just has a ridiculous amount of excuses in it. Excuses that fail.

At the end of the day he (Paterno) didn't do the crime? A man in his position of authority has a moral obligation to do the right thing for the child. Paterno chose to do the right thing for the university, for Sandusky, and for Joe Paterno.

There are many many more at fault? Perhaps, but that has nothing to do with Paterno. It does not change for one second the fact that Paterno should have made sure this crime was reported to police.

It's hard to make decisions on what others think you should make? He's Joe Paterno, the man who has been hailed for doing everything 'right' for a half century. He knew the right thing to do. He didn't do it.

Even if he knew just a fraction of what was going on? Please. Joe Paterno knows everything that's going on at Penn State. And in a situation like this, if he doesn't have all the information, what he doesn't know, he should find out. If someone had told Paterno they saw Sandusky in the shower with Paterno's 10 year old grandson, but didn't tell Paterno everything...you think Paterno would have left it at that?

Interim head coach said he will be coaching this weekend, whether its in the box or sideline is a 'game time decision'. I don't see why he's not gone either. With Joe Paterno gone, he's the focal point of those trying to get past this.

The whole program needs a clean break from everyone involved in this to move on.

A lot of onlookers get upset or are at least perplexed when the broom doesn't instantaneously sweep clean, but sometimes there are certain procedural reasons for brief delays. Thirty years ago, a board of directors wanted to fire a friend of mine who was deputy director of a large guidance center, but the board didn't have that authority, so they fired the Director, and the next morning, the new Director fired him. There are also contractual impediments that can be met fairly promptly but do take a little time. It could be that the next president is required to have a hearing before firing someone that doesn't report directly to him.

Umm he's 84 years old... he prob doesn't know what a Mosquito is let alone how many fly...but you think what ya like, I think he knew something but didn't do what others wanted him to do or expected and that could be for anyone at any time - he didn't do the crime though and all the attention has shifted onto him and it's not right. Like I said... he will die from this, the stress will kill him.

Playing devil's advocate concerning McGraevy,Jerry Sandusky was apparently a friend of the family & most likely an authority figure. Imagine someone in your life that you hold in high estime, whether it be your father, coach, etc. Now imagine walking into a room & seeing him doing something so vile & disgusting. Your first reaction will be complete shock & disbelief. Your next reaction will be to turn & run. It's human nature. It doesn't excuse McGraevy.but can YOU honestly say you'd do differently if it were you? Now McGraevy, his father,& Penn State needed to immediately needed to notify law enforcement,& they ALL failed miserably. That is McGraevy's real fault,he didn't notify law enforcement.

Yeah, the 'doddering old man' excuse is not going to cut it here. This began 13 years ago, and even if you want to say he's old now (he seemed pretty coherent and functional last night), back then he was definitely large and in charge. Probably still is now, for that matter.

And Joe, please for the love of all that is holy, STOP SAYING PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS! You had your chance to help the victims a long time ago. And you also had a chance to do something to keep there from being new victims. You passed.

Both times you decided the Joe Paterno and Penn State brands were more important than the kids. You're done talking about the kids now...leave it to people who actually care about them.

He knew about it in 98 and 2002, by then he should of realize there was a problem and something should of been done like ban him, call the police just something.

The problem is that Joe just thinks got himself and the good of the university, not the good of anyone else.
