I wonder if the NCAA will punish PSU at all. This makes what OSU and USC did look like eating candy before dinner

The NCAA only punishes colleges where "student-athletes" dare to live above the poverty level(refuse to take the NCAA vow of poverty). Raping & abusing children isn't a punishable offense to the NCAA(unless the college was using it to get potential recruits to come to their school). The NCAA are a big load of hypocrites. What I said may have nothing to with the thread, but you asked what the NCAA would do,& I answered according to that.

i'm more than ok jopa being fired since he enabled this situation but i better not see that assistant coach who witnessed the rape of young boy on that field saturday!

its been repeated a few times already that the NCAA can't do anything about this. its a LEGAL matter.

i want to hear today that the assistant coach who witnessed sandusky in the shower doing you know what, FIRED as well!

Please close the thread, since my post was the cause of problems even though I don't think it was, I was just stating my opinion about the post above mine which didn't get deleted. Anyway go ahead and close it, thanks.

That was a mistake - mis-read that post; and only thought it was the last sentence, which I nuked, needed to go. For fairness, I deleted the whole post. But we don't need to close the thread. Just a small mess in aisle 3, its been cleaned up, and we can move forward. But may merge the two threads.

Threads merged. Topics were bleeding into each other.

Anyways, I understand the role Paterno played on the Penn State Campus, but was disappointed to read about the riots on campus last night. He is a football coach who did nothing to prevent one of the worst possible crimes from continuing, and the students are rioting because he was fired. The Trustees did the ONLY THING they could do, which was to remove him immediately. (Perhaps some of that was in their own interest in shielding against likely civil suits), but regardless, people have to be blinded by their love of football to think he should have stayed.

And if the Seniors boycott the game on Saturday, they should lose their scholarships.

I am gonna disagree. I think there was a lack of institional control by both the coach and the AD. They may have not cheated, but to protect the reputation of the school, didn't the head coach, some of his staff and some school officials hide something that illegally happened? In this case, it happened to be Paterno and the football team. You could have said the same if this involved the basketball, soccer or lacrosse team.

What can the NCAA do that will be worse than what will happen to the school and individuals involved going through the legal system and due process?? Vacate wins??

No one here who is pushing this "institutional control" crusade has answered this simple question: What NCAA rules were broken in this case that would mandate that the NCAA get involved??

I don't know...but by ALLOWING this animal still around the campus and the football program...knowing what they did, does that not show a lack of institutional control?

this isn't a matter of whats your opinion and mine salsa. NCAA has jurisdiction over NCAA rules. when a criminal act against the law is committed then the law steps in. you can argue that if you wish but the outcome to this situation will only be one. Penn st. is being very careful what they say not because of what the ncaa might do. they're being careful because of the lawyers that are watching and listening. Joe already has made a mistake by making the comment "i wish i would've done more". Penn St. is deeply concerned about all the lawsuits that may result out of this whole situation.

This is obviously much bigger than the NCAA here. Pennsylvania state and possibly federal laws were broken. The reputation of the football program and the school has been badly damaged and will be affected for years to come.

They're going to wish it was only vacated wins, or lost scholarships at stake....

I have not disputed that is a legal issue at all. All I am saying is what do you consider an administration allowing a former coach with a known history that Sandusky had being allowed to be around the football program?

i would agree there's a problem with administration but even if its late, penn st. is making the moves to get rid of the people who knew or were involved. having said that i still don't see the NCAA stepping into this. my opinion, and this is just My opinion, I don't think the NCAA wants any part of this anyway. i thinks its appropriate just to allow state a federal authorities to handle this situation.

This is a really good article from the Los Angeles Times

Bill Plaschke: This should be the end of Paterno State - latimes.com

As university presidents throughout the country view the steaming pile of rubble that was once college football's greatest coach and its most admired program, they should understand one thing.

None of this is a coincidence.

It is no coincidence that the most heinous scandal in the history of college sports happened at Penn State University.

It is no coincidence that an alleged child molester was allowed to roam the Penn State University grounds unchecked for nearly a decade with the knowledge of everyone from the school president to the football coach.

It is no coincidence that an alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy in the showers of the school's football locker room was never reported to police by anyone at Penn State University.

It is no coincidence, because for 46 years it was not really Penn State University, it was Paterno State University. It was a school that sold its soul to football coach Joe Paterno for the sake of riches and recognition, a school that found its identity in his plain uniforms and lived its life by his corny pep talks.

Paterno was allowed to play God, and so his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was allowed to do whatever he wanted, wherever he wanted, even if it included alleged sexual abuse of eight boys over a 15-year period.

Yeah.... I know they are cleaning house, but EVERYONE does that when 1st get busted....then they get sanctioned.

It was so bizarre watching this last night. It's very easy to feel sad for a couple who are in their 80's, with the wife standing there crying, who have done so much for the university. I get that.

BUT...what someone said in here earlier is so true. His silence enabled little boys to be raped. You cannot forget that.

Students rioting in support of Paterno is just in extremely poor taste. The victims here are not named Paterno.

And yet...people are NOW stating that it was mishandled by the university because they did it over the phone. The ONLY way it was mishandled was that the announcement was done AT.... and you saw the end result of making that announcement.

Yes, but that's a bunch of crap. Deep down these people know they are occupying the moral low ground, so they are looking for anything they can latch onto. He was told over the phone. So what.

If it wasn't that, people would have complained that he's 84 and should not have been made to go out so late at night, or anything else they could have thought of. Like Steve Levy said last night, how Paterno found out is WAY down on the list of what is important here.
