DIRECTV unlikely to keep NFL Sunday Ticket

The NFL has been playing games in London since 2007. They have 5 games scheduled this year in London, Munich, and Mexico City. They have been definitely trying to expand the market globally. Heck, they sponsored the World League of American Football back in the 90s.

But, true that the $$$ for those rights are small compared to the US rights. That doesn’t mean it’s unimportant to the NFL, and a potential market that whoever gets the rights wouldn’t try to exploit.
They will be camcelled soon enough

I was just hanging out in my local place last night and the barkeep had soccer on one of the TVs. Manchester City vs. Bayern. We got to watching it, slow night, and they went to a wide shot.

They were playing at Lambeau Field.

Yes, in any large and diverse country, you can have a few foreign sports now and then. Any good marketer should be able to sell anything as a novelty, now and then.

That is a different discussion than how many people will pay for EXTRA NFL games, on top of those they already get on various channels in basic packages on another continent, where the games would be on at night.

The rights to ST in not-America are not non-existent. They are, however, very minimal.

But what about roku and firetv?.. docwe exclude those customers too? ..
Thats on those devices whether or not they want to add that feature.

I know the ESPN app on the Apple TV does quad PIP seamlessly and looks great.

With today’s technology, and sports betting taking off in the past few years, I’m really surprised multi-game viewing hasn’t been a built in option in todays bigger screen TV’s, either by using the built in apps or by using 4 separate devices using the 4 HDMI ports.

Apple is adding this feature

Gambling, and the long delays that are inherent in streaming is an issue. Neither casinos nor gamblers are going to want the video to be 30 seconds to 1 minute behind actual live.

Yup, I'm looking forward to the innovations that come as part of going to streaming. A lot of potential. We're already seeing alternate announcers/presentations and my kids enjoyed the Nickelodeon games.

And apparently, Now there are 4 ....
Google has entered the ST bidding ....

Another company with a lot of cash on hand, Google has $140 Billion, so giving up around $2.5 Billion is nothing to them, specially since they should make a lot of it back.

Google was able to turn YTTV profitable, who knows what they can do with ST.

It would be a great tax write off

Apple doesn't have make their money driving people to their streaming service. They have the 1-2 minutes an hour of ad inserts during each game, which they can use to tailor ads to customers.
Fox figured that out years ago. Acquiring the NFL deal got them the exposure they needed to become the 4th "big network".

It's common sense that these networks/streamers don't have to make their profit simply on the game broadcasts themselves.

Worked for directv for a looong time..but alas satellite is not growing anymore

Google - This would be the worst case scenario for the consumer. Because ST MUST be predicated on first buying something else, Amazon with use Prime or Apple would use Apple TV. Both are nice supplements to linear TV. But Google? They would predicate it on first buying YouTube TV, their steaming linear TV service which is grossly inferior to not only DirecTV, but even to Dish, most cable companies and most of the other streaming linear channel services. No, thank you.

NFL+ - The NFL is just packaging stuff that it previously sold separately in one box. Pre-season games are mostly on NFLN and don’t matter anyway. Audio calls are on SXM radio. And the video of the games shown locally used to be free on any phone, and are still free on a thing I like to call a TV with an antenna. The national games are included in the network involved streaming service. No thank you.

First, there is no evidence that is what Google has planned.

Second, have you ever tried YTTV, specially lately where they have done major upgrades to the service, I get a 1080P picture, Dolby Digital+ sound, I get a unlimited DVR ( which I never use) at no charge, I get 3 streams without having to pay for boxes, I can get unlimited streams and 4K for certain special events for a extra $10 a month ( which I do not do, I have so much programming in 4K now, I cannot catch up).

The only thing they do not have is my local RSN (which I have no interest in, I care nothing about the local sports teams here-Florida), all for $65 a month.

But, to be honest, if it was not for watching Michigan Football and CNN, I would drop Pay Live TV in a second

No thanks for me either.

Also, I never watch TV/Movies on my Phone, I used to watch stuff on my ipad when on the Life Cycle at the gym, but now, I bought a Life Cycle for home, so I watch stuff on the projector outside while riding.

The only “evidence” is basic math. This package LOSES money and will LOSE money for whoever gets it. Unless you believe there are more potential subscribers out there than now watch the “free” games on a typical Sunday. Thus the only business play is the same one DirecTV used. Predicate access on first buying other things. And no thank you to the inferior YTTV.

As to YouTubeTV, yep tried it. No local sports. Inferior. No thank you. Life is too short to do without the most important thing on TV.

It's literally not. Customer acquisition costs alone make it a whole new ballgame when it comes to the appeal of the package to streaming providers.

You continue to ignore brand value and other value added services, exposure to other ecosystem products leading to more consumer spend due to exposure to the NFL product... instead it's just these self-serving 'subscription x number of subs doesn't add up!' arguments.

Then you do the math.

Look up the ratings from any Sunday for the “free” afternoon games. And then explain how they make money selling extra games on a cash basis.

So, that fails totally.

So there is this great unwashed mass out there that has never heard of Apple, but when they get ST is suddenly going to be thrilled about the company?

Right.

Nope, the only play is to predicate access on first buying the base package.

Directly? No. Indirectly? No. Probably. If they were, they’d make a play to keep it.

It would be interesting to see the numbers when it comes to the most subscribers they've had compared to what they have now for Sunday Ticket. I know they've lost Directv Subscribers but I wonder what the most number of subs they had for Sunday Ticket. I still believe Directv will be allowed to offer this next year as well as the streaming service. Just my opinion.
