Detroit Tigers 2008

The Tigers have swept the Rockies and are now above the water of .500.

I think we may have buried them too early...

Fortunately they have worked thier way back into the thick of things.

They are getting timely hitting and some mostly good pitching.
Granderson, Palonco and Cabrera are hitting again.
Cabrera looks like he's getting comfortable in the AL., he's had BIG hits in the last several games, game winning and /or getting them back into it. He's playing much more like the Cabrera the Tigers expected whern they traded for him.

Now if the Cubs can win tonight, they will have crawled all the way back to only 4 GB, on June 8-9th the were 12 games under .500 and 11 GB.

Unfortunately though, as the Tigers have seem to have finally get things going, they will have to continue without Maglio Ordonez. He was placed on the 15-day DL.

Strained oblique :(

If he's only out for 15 days, I and they will be happy I'm sure.
As I mentioned, Mr. Cabrera is starting to come alive so that will help.

Interestingly enough, the guy that came in to replace Ordonez, Ryan Raburn, former Toledo Mud Hen came in and hit a Grand Slam to help the Tigers win last night.
There are alot of Tigers that have played with the Hens on the team, they have done a good bringing up players from the minors and they have all stepped up and contributed.

The help we're getting from AAA is reminicent of '06. Anyways, the Tigers despite dropping 2 to the Twinkies are in a good position to make a second half run for the title. I hope Maggs is back soon though.

It looks like they have to have either Maggs or Cabrera in the line up to have a chance.
Is Sheff back playing regularly or is he in and out ?

Need better pitching, kinda went south against the Twins.
Made me start to wonder if this surge of respectability was just because they played the NL and they will fall back to old habits now that they are back in the AL.

I hope NOT.

Paul,
Should they try to get Sabathia ?
They may not have to give up much, seeing he may only be a rental , I would hope the Tigers would sign him long term, but I don't think the Indians will get as much as they might think if he is not willing to sign somewhere long term.

Jimbo, go to the Cleveland thread for my thoughts on this matter. (Sabathia).
As for the Twinkies series, I think the pitching thing was just a hiccup. If you look back over the last month and a half, the starters have been very solid. They should have won yesterday for Rogers, they left about 100 guys on base.

Yes,
MANY oppertunities to score and they passed on them.

Seems like they have had a few games in the last week or so that they should have won, but failed.
I hope they are not slipping again.

Do you think the pitching has improved that much in the last month or has the playing the NL made them look much better ?

Unfortunately, without Ordonez in there, I think the Tigers are starting to slide again.

edit:
It took them 15 innings to beat the Mariners today and that only got them a split in the series, that said, it's the 1st series they haven't won in a long time now.
Pitching was awesome today, of course NO HITTING showed up again.
This lineup they have, has been held to 2 runs or less over 25 times ALREADY this year.

I couldn't believe the Mariners got themselves into the position that the backup catcher had to come in and pitch. Like swinging at batting practice. Robertson was outstanding yesterday, as well as Zumaya and the rest that pitched. By the way Jimbo, didn't they just lose a series to the Twins?

Yes,
That was the first one they actually lost, they ended up splitting with the Mariners, but I know what your saying, my error :D

Well, the Tigers win again last night,:) but of course ... so does the White Sox, so they continue to hang in there, but not picking up any ground :(

When will the bleeding stop?! This is the Tribe's 9th loss in a row! This is our longest losing streak since '04. :(

Its great to see the tigers get on a bit of a role, but do they have enough to go on another streak of 7 of 10 or 16 of 20. to get back into first!

I think they will be fine when they start getting the injured back, they were actually playing pretty good ball before Ordonez and Sheffield went down, Shef is back, always takes some time to get back in the swing of things.
IF the pitching gets a bit better, I think they will make another run.
Verlander is pitching much better than earlier in the year.
Zumaya has looked almost back to his old self.
Still not sure if Rodney is going to get it all back.

Once these two regain thier form, the others that were role players can go back to thier roles.
Cabrara has seemed to put it together of late.
With this team, I look forward to NEXT year even more than this one.

Hey Jimbo, I just remembered you asking about Zumaya possibly being made a starter again, and I wanted you to know the Tiger's brass is kicking that idea around for next spring. Zumaya is on record saying that he prefers to remain a reliever. At any rate I'm here typing because the Tiger's are getting kicked in the you know what by the Tribe, tonight.

I heard the Starter talk too, but was under the assumption that it would be later in his career, not next year.
That said, he was right there with J. Verlander as a starter in the minors.
