Charles Barkely was right

I agree....that why I brought up the example of Bo Shembechler. Perhaps after a few years of seasoning (experience) and improving his 15-22 record (consistency), perhaps Turner he may be ready to step-up to big time college football.;) Right now he hasn't met the minimum requirements to deserve being selected to lead the Auburn team. However, I would have selected Turner over the other joker if forced to chose between these two less-than-fully-qualified candidates if I were being held at gunpoint.

Geez dude....Your killing me with this crap...did you want him to make them a winner INSTANTLY, the moment he step on campus??!! BO did not inheret a team that wasn't even competing in Division I football. Gil went 2-10 with SOMEONE ELSE'S players.....5-7 with some of the remnants of someone else's recruiting and some his and then 8-5 with alot more of HIS recruits. He HAS SHOWN "consistency" by improving record every year he has been head coach.

It kills me that everyone bitches about "smaller conference do no get their fair shake.......and here is a guy that was ALSO an assistant coach at Nebraska...a major program...was given a a chance to be a head coach...showed GREAT improvement every year...and yet, he is NOT ready??!!

Why was Gill not offered the Cornhuskers did not offer last year??

Guess he hadn't won the MAC championship yet.

But that's okay, Gill re-upped at Buffalo until 2013 (yeah, right!) with a hefty raise, according to Wikipedia.

Hiring someone is obviously a subjective decision. You would hope that with millions of dollars and possibly their jobs and at stake, Auburn's administration would make their decision with the school's best interest at heart. Did they make a bad decision?? Time will tell. Did they make a racist decision?? I doubt it.

Just because two unnamed coaches and an NBA commentator claim there is racism doesn't make it so. And, by igniting this firestorm, Barkley didn't do his alma mater any favors either....

Its not because the other guy is black..

"Chizik was the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2004, when the Tigers finished 13-0 and ranked No. 2 in the country.
"

That says it all. He used to work for Auburn. They know him, they trust him, and he was on board when they went undefeated.. Shesh does everything need to be racist?

+1!

Honestly, I neither of these guys were at the top of the list, but by the time you get down to this level in the hiring process, they went with the guy familiar with the area (for recruiting) and the guy that was familiar with the university and who runs it, above the guy with the better resume. In any case, I think it was a bad hire, but it wasnt racist. Put the same situation outside of the south and we wouldnt be discussing it IMHO

I agree with this also. I also question his real motive for saying this. Barkley has dabbled in politics in Alabama for a while (well he has tried to get in them anyway). Perhaps he thinks by opposing this he will get a rep with the voters? Who knows. In any case, I think he is off base with his comments.

So Auburn hired a guy based on what he did 4 years ago?

Look, I don't know if race was a factor in this decision or not, but this is getting attention not because it happened to an southern team, but because they hired a guy on a 10 game losing streak instead of other more qualified candidates. If Auburn hired Mike Leach, this would've never gotten as much attention as it's getting now.

And because the choice of Chizik was so unexplainable, Charles and others are looking into alternative motives for/against the hire as an explanation.

Whether you agree with Chizik or not, you cant HONESTLY tell me that IF GILL were white this would be as big of a deal. And IF this where at Nebraska or Washington (or somewhere but the south) it would matter. The media is making this a racial matter where none exist IMHO. It isnt about qualifications as far as they are concerened. Its about a story. They see a Southern school that hired a "good ole boy" with ties to the area. A "good ole boy" that knows how to get recruits here versus a guy with a better resume (who happens to be black:rolleyes:) when they both werent even at the top of the wish list. Seriously, by the time they got to both of these guys, or Patrick Nix for that matter, other factors come into play.

Edit: I agree that it was a bad hire based on what he has done, but it wasnt racial at all, and I do understand why they went with him at this point

See, I can understand Barkley's point: ONE, he his alumni, that contributes ALOT of money to the school and would like for QUALIFIED blacks to be offered jobs, especially when almost 75% of the athletes participating IN THE SPORT are black. TWO, he spoke to Gil during the process, and he stated that he was a good guy with MORE than good enough qualifications for the job. THREE, the coach selected might have been a GOD as a defensive coordinator....but sucked as a head coach AT a relatively decent size program...that ENDED the season with a 10 game losing streak to boot.

SOME coaches are just not ment to be head coaches.....
75% of the Athletes and 95% starters! I hope most of the recruits see this and goes to another school!

Yep BH, I think that thought / plan is a bit to simplistic and really doesn't solve or prove anything. An example using your stat could also be used to say that maybe non-Blacks are being discriminated against at the player / starter level. Should we then force schools to accept players, students, etc just to fill stats or make things look a certain way to appease others or make them more media friendly? I don't think so. These types of knee-jerk reactions can tend to make things worse over time. Sometime, most times, we need to look beyond race as being the key factor or any factor in why decisions are made. Usually its not the factor, but everyone knows that uttering racism garners much more attention while ALSO negatively impacting the people and or institution its used against; a de facto, pre-proof punishment if you will; almost in a strong-arm, terrorist, extortion kind of way! If we are ever to truly move past racism as a civilized people, then we MUST stop throwing it out there as the first cause, the only cause of why someone may or may not get their way; or as the only explanations as to why things happen to us.

And we must never close our eyes and pretend that racism doesn't exist. These decisions need to be examined beyond the explanations given in public by the decision makers. The NCAA does need to be involved in the process when there is such a great disparity in the number of minority coaches in college football, and qualified minority coaches are being passed over for positions at major programs.

We'll know that we've achieved a milestone in race relations when a minority coach can be hired and fired without race entering the discussion. We're not there yet.

Let me reverse the situation, IF it was GIL who had worked for Auburn previously and had just come off a 10 games losing streak and only won 5 games in a couple of years in a decent, known football program and Chizik won the MAC after the team was nothing more than flag football team a few you ago....do you honestly think that Auburn would have even LOOKED at Gils' way??!!

Why not? They did already without reversing the roles.

Again, I dont think chizik was a good hire, but you left the good points out of his resume in the role reversal here. He did more than just work for Auburn. He was a proven recruiter (which is very important when the new head coach has to recruit against Saban in this state) in the area and a dang good D.C.. Still not proven as a head coach sure, but possibly more upside for THIS job in THIS area (out of the options that Auburn had available at THIS point).

Again and again..

If he was one of Lowders guys, Gill would have been hired just as Chizik was hired. Lowder was not in control while Tubervile was head coach. He now has the power back with Chzik.

Damn people. RACE had NOTHING at all to do with this hire. It was ALL about POWER!!!!
