Charles Barkely was right

Ok, I'd like to say my opinion on the matter. I do not know much about the topic, but this is my view. The hiring was due to Auburn ties, and it was not just because one man was white and the other was black. A lot of teams like to hire successful coordinators that they have had in the past. If you swap the color of both coaches, I think the result would be the same.

The WHY doesn't Auburn just come out and say, "we hired the someone familiar with our program...." yada, yada, yada? Sorry....this stinks of 'ole boy network' in a real bad way.

I'm so tired of "race issues". Didn't we just elect a "man of color" president? Barkley should give a bigger donation to the school, and then maybe he would have a bigger voice in these matters.

While many of you are making excellent points and have great observations like salsa,Hdm and others, i just feel that some (media) are making a bigger deal out of this than what it actually is. Sometimes the ones that say a decision was made based on race are the 1st ones that are racists. That's just my personal feeling on the subject. I'll just keep on reading what you guys post in this thread.

Ok, but how does everyone explain this comment made by TWO SEC coaches themselves?! ..........
Just because two unnamed coaches feel there were racial implications, does that necessarily mean race played a factor in the Auburn hire??

Maybe these unknown coaches feel they were also similarly overlooked for HC positions and have an axe to grind??

Of course it's the ole boy network. Anytime you have an organization run by donors, they are going to have a say. Good or bad. Regardless of race, if they don't want to hand the reigns of a multi-million dollar organization over to a guy who won the MAC and instead want to give it to a guy they are familiar with but hasn't won anything, then that is their prerogative. If it doesn't work out, then it's likely that Jacobs and maybe even the President will be gone along with Chizik.

See, I can understand Barkley's point: ONE, he his alumni, that contributes ALOT of money to the school and would like for QUALIFIED blacks to be offered jobs, especially when almost 75% of the athletes participating IN THE SPORT are black. TWO, he spoke to Gil during the process, and he stated that he was a good guy with MORE than good enough qualifications for the job. THREE, the coach selected might have been a GOD as a defensive coordinator....but sucked as a head coach AT a relatively decent size program...that ENDED the season with a 10 game losing streak to boot.

SOME coaches are just not ment to be head coaches.....

You would like to think the school would at least interview Turner Gill, so they could find out for themselves if he's qualified.

They did interview him.

How Jacobs settled on Chizik is perplexing. Jacobs talked to nearly anyone who was interested in coaching at Auburn. He interviewed at least eight candidates: Ball State's Brady Hoke, Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley, Buffalo's Turner Gill, TCU's Gary Patterson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Tulsa's Todd Graham, Georgia assistant Rodney Garner and Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix.

The state of Oklahoma takes some hits for many things, but one thing you can't say about the schools is that they don't hire black coaches. At one time in the 90's, both OU and OSU had black head coaches in the football programs. Neither had been a head coach before, and neither was particularly successful, but both had ample time to build a program.

Kelvin Sampson (not technically black, but a member of the Black Coaches Assn.) and now the aforementioned Jeff Capel have coached the men's basketball program at OU for more than a decade now. Under Capel, the OU team is in the AP top 5 right now, in his 3rd season. Neither came from powerhouse basketball programs, but both had a history of success at their level.

I have nothing against Chizik, I'm sure he's a wonderful person, gives a good interview, and may actually have some success at Auburn. But I think the odds are better that a proven winner would have done better.

I agree with this. That would definitely quiet things down and if it was for that reason i guess that would be ok too.

Excellent post. One reason this is getting so much attention is because the school is in the south, and that is B.S.!

Why is that so important? Did Bob Stoops have an Oklahoma background? Did Urban Meyer have a Florida background. If that's the hiring criteria for Auburn, they're missing out on the best available talent.

yes that could be part of it and if that is the case those people that feel this way are not much better than the ones that don't hire coaches because of their race. (my opinion)

racism, the dumbest and stupidest thing i've ever heard or seen in my entire life.

Wait a minute.....Buffalo, UNDER Gil went from a NOTHING almost intermural team. Going from 2-10 to a bowl game AND winning the MAC....ALOT of BIG name coaches started that way....
I agree....that why I brought up the example of Bo Shembechler. Perhaps after a few years of seasoning (experience) and improving his 15-22 record (consistency), perhaps Turner he may be ready to step-up to big time college football.;) Right now he hasn't met the minimum requirements to deserve being selected to lead the Auburn team. However, I would have selected Turner over the other joker if forced to chose between these two less-than-fully-qualified candidates if I were being held at gunpoint.

This is exactly why people here are pissed. Bobby Lowder running the show. He wanted HIS guy in there. Not because of his color but because he knew Chizik and will take advice from him.

We wanted the best coach, period.

I disagree how things are being run there but to say it was race. I am sorry. People do not know what they are talking about. Including Sir Charlies.

It was about power. Not the color of the skins coach.

i agree. like i said if they hired this guy because of those reasons i guess it would be ok because it's better than hiring him because he's white but it's definitely not the smartest decision.

Why doesn't Auburn just come out and say, "We hired someone who we feel was the best choice for our program??"

After all, the man does have credentials. Chizik won the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant in 2004. That after his Auburn defense gave up 11.3 points per game, fewest in the nation.

Former Winners of the Broyles Award

Chizik was Texas' defensive coordinator when the Longhorns won their 2005 national title.

If you watched the press conference Monday. It was stated over and over." Gene was the best fit for Auburn" by Jay Jacobs. (Jacobs is a big pawn for Lowder also and a joke for a AD.)
