Charles Barkely was right

Ok...I am curious, why do you thing he was NOT qualified? I understand you disliking of Rodriguez but what does Rodriguez hiring and firing have anything to do with this thread?

I totally agree with my exuberant friend here. I see no reason Gill should not have been hired. Auburn ties for Chzik? Jeesh, the guy has done nothing to prove he can coach or recruit.

But I am also surprised Syracuse did not look at Gill. I really hope race is not a factor here (either his or his wife's).

Chizik was dc at Auburn for 3 years. At that time was a very good recruiter for Auburn.

Sounds like I was happy with the hire.lol

Just saying what the facts are.

A PROVEN winner and someone that has experience in turning programs wround was needed to appease the appetite of winning soon....not hire a guy with a current 10 game losing streak and only 5 wins....just because he USE TO be a DC there. He just proved at Iowa State he can't win....

Some people are just DC or OC....and some guys can't coach.

Well said, my friend.

And you can tell that how?

That is why the word "probably" was used.... I have dealt PERSONALLY and PROFESSIONALLY with enough pro athletes to know that I have been right at least 75% of the time on how these guys are when the camera and the mic are NOT around. ;)

Well unfortunately I don't know Hank personally, but hockey players in general are well known to be the friendliest and most down to earth athletes of the major sports.

Just because he's a badger on the ice doesn't mean he is one in person. But who knows, I'm sure there are bad apples in hockey too...even ones not named Sean Avery!

Offhand, I don't see what is so difficult about eliminating Turner from consideration...his brief 15-22 record as a Head Coach of a MAC Team (Buffalo, no less) shows me that he does not possess enough experience nor has he proven himself capable of stepping-up to handle Auburn's top spot. If I were a Kentucky or a Vanderbilt, it may be worth the gamble...but Auburn expects a lot more from their football program, and there is not much time for on-the-job training.

Over the years, there have been a number of really good coaches who stepped-up from the MAC and into a big time football program. Heck, Bo Shembechler came to Michigan after being the Head Coach at the University of Miami (Ohio), but he brought with him a 40-17-3 record and six successful seasons before being given an interview.

I don't see why Chizik or Turner would ever be considered for this position. I would just as soon assign an "Interim Head Coach" than I would select the guy, or gal, based on his qualification of sucking less. Would you hire Turner if you were the Auburn AD?

Did this really just become a race issue because Charles Barkley said it was??

I usually agree and respect most of what Barkley says, but in this case I feel there is too much of an emotional attachment. It would make more sense for him to address the overall lack of black head coaches in NCAA's Bowl Subdivision and possibly use the Auburn case as a recent example.

"My biggest problem with the black coaches is they're not getting jobs and they're getting [expletive] jobs when they are hired," Barkley said. "They're not getting good jobs. They're not getting jobs where they can be successful. That's why I wanted Turner to get the Auburn job. He could win consistently at Auburn. You can't win consistently at New Mexico. You can't win consistently at Kansas State. He could have won at Auburn."

This is the quote where he lost me. It's not enough to get a HC position at a New Mexico or K-State?? It's ridiculous to say Gill could only consistently win at Auburn.

I'm so tired of "race issues". Didn't we just elect a "man of color" president? Barkley should give a bigger donation to the school, and then maybe he would have a bigger voice in these matters.

The blue states elected the Prez, not the red ones. Auburn is a red state. ;)

What? Just saying.... :D

Wait a minute.....Buffalo, UNDER Gil went from a NOTHING almost intermural team. Going from 2-10 to a bowl game AND winning the MAC....ALOT of BIG name coaches started that way....

Ok, I'd like to say my opinion on the matter. I do not know much about the topic, but this is my view. The hiring was due to Auburn ties, and it was not just because one man was white and the other was black. A lot of teams like to hire successful coordinators that they have had in the past. If you swap the color of both coaches, I think the result would be the same.

Ok, but how does everyone explain this comment made by TWO SEC coaches themselves?! ..........

ESPN.com football writer Mark Schlabach told "Outside The Lines" today that two other SEC coaches told him, straight up, that Gill would never get the Auburn job, because he's married to a white woman.
