AL EAST 2009

Red Sox winning streak now up to 10.

The Sox go on a nine game road trip starting tomorrow night in Cleveland.

They play three with the Indians, then go to Tampa for four and then play their first two games in the new Yankee Stadium next Monday and Tuesday.

One final note: The disparity in the depth of the pitching staffs between the Red Sox and Yankees is frightening.

The Red Sox are loaded!!! As far as the Yankees go, what else is there to say. Pettite pitched a pretty good game although I think all of RedSox Nation thought it was sweet that Damon made the final out.

The pitching staff is L-O-A-D-E-D.

Smoltz should be ready to go in two weeks, Dice-K will probably be back in three weeks, but the starting rotation already has Beckett, Lester, Wakefield, Penny and now Masterson (who is on his way to be a stud!). Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden (who pitched two innings of no hit relief tonight) would be starting for any other team in the majors, but are stuck in AAA until further notice.

The bullpen is even deeper than the rotation with Papelbon, Saito, Okajima, Delcarmen, Masterson (when Smoltz and/or Dice-K come back) and Ramirez (who has been virtually unhittable in 12 innings pitched) all capable of pitching the eighth or ninth innings. And then they have this kid Daniel Bard, who has the whole baseball world talking, closing games in AAA. Cosmo provided his stats earlier: 14 innings pitched, with 3 saves and 15 strikeouts and a 0.64 ERA with a 100 mph fastball!!!

The bench is very thin right now, but once they get Lugo, Baldelli, Kotsay and Lowrie back, they'll be fine there also.

IMO, the only thing I think this team might need is another bat at the trading deadline.

Boston struck it rich with Jason Bay last summer; if lightning were to strike twice, who would be an available slugger?

We'll have to see what teams fall out of contention in July.

The Sox have done an outstanding job with their farm system, and I don't want to deal any of these top prospects (especially Bard, Buchholz, Bowden and power hitting first baseman Lars Anderson) to rent a bat.

People, People , People ....

Yes it was a good weekend in Boston, but ...

If I recall .... they Yanks got off to a very poor start last year as well and ended in the thick of things by the end of the year.

My point it that it is WAY too early to get all wound up about a 3 game series in APRIL.

At this point, yes, the Sox look much better.

Personally, I hope the yanks end up LAST in the AL East, but I don't see that happening either.

Red Sox Nation, enjoy the weekend and move on.
Your playing VERY WELL, keep it up and pull away from the resat while you have a chance, that would be the most important thing they can do at this point.

Currently, your still behind Toronto, after winning 10 straight.
I'm not saying Toronto will be there in the end either.

Just enjoy the streak and may the rest of the year go this well. :)

Rich? Far from it. Maybe they stayed the same for losing Manny. But I don't see the fear in pitchers that manny put into them and Papi is struggling because of injury and because he left..

The Rays are not playing like the Rays of '08 right now. Toronto is playing better, having won six series in a row to start the season...
I know but they seem to have Bostons' number. Even playing poorly they won the last 2 out of 3. If you want to be good you can't give up 11 runs and you have to beat the last place team. And lets not forget Arod wasnt on the field. I'm a huge Red Sox fan but I am not dellusional.

Call me if they win even one game in Tampa. How can you say pitching is loaded when they gave up 11 runs saturday?

Tampa is just as strong, if not stronger than the Red Sox.

As far as the Red Sox giving up 11 runs, that's gonna happen over the course of a 162 game season. Besides, what team has more Major League caliber pitchers than the Red Sox? MAYBE Tampa. When you have a David Price pitching in AAA, your staff must be VERY deep.

Who's being delusional?? I don't see anyone here wanting to engrave any trophies, or put up any banners yet.

As for giving up a few too many runs, a win is a win is a win. They are just as important now than they are in September, no matter who your opponent throws out there...

Checking in from Cleveland

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff April 27, 2009 03:00 PM

CLEVELAND - Daisuke Matsuzaka is out in rightcenter field playing long toss and continuing his shoulder strengthening program. It's expected the Sox will go slow with Dice-K making sure his body and shoulder is 100 percent before he's incorporated back into the rotation.
Other things we'll be watching today on warm day here (temperatures in the mid-80s):
*We'll get an update on J.D. Drew who came out of last night's game with a tight left quad. He's not expected to play this evening. Jeff Bailey will likely be in right field with lefty Cliff Lee going tonight.
*Mike Lowell has received American League Player of the Week after hitting .435 with a major league high 11 RBI.
*We'll also have more on the Jacoby Ellsbury hangover of stealing home against the Yankees. Ellsbury's cell phone was quite active last night and this morning and we'll get an idea of who called.
*Julio Lugo was activated today (Michael Bowden optioned to Pawtucket) and will be available tonight but Nick Green is expected to be in the lineup. From tonight on, however, Terry Francona will likely diminish Green's role at shortstop and use him as a true utility man. Francona explained the situation to Green personally yesterday.
*Tim Wakefield has tossed two CGs, though one of them was a rain-shortened 7 innings. We'll see if those two outings have taken any toll on the 42-year-old starter.
*The Sox re-signed righthander Devern Hansack after they'd waived him last week. Hansack is rehabbing his right shoulder in Fort Myers.

That thrashing of the Yankees was the Red Sox most awsome demolition of an opponent since they did that and more to the Yankees and the Orioles in 1978.
