AL EAST 2009

Daniel Bard is tearing up AAA with his 100 mph fastball. During the Fox broadcast yesterday, Tim McCarver was saying that from talking to scouts that Bard is going to be special.
Bard's stats at Pawtucket so far this season:

Bowden called up
By: Alex Speier
Michael Bowden is currently on the field during batting practice, having apparently been called up to Boston from Triple-A Pawtucket for today's game. We'll be back with the corresponding roster move that has him with the Sox, but one might assume that Gil Velazquez has been sent back down with Julio Lugo ready to return to the Sox tomorrow, when they travel to Cleveland.

The Red Sox have made a small, temporary roster move. Michael Bowden is here from Triple A Pawtucket, replacing utility infielder Gil Velazquez so the Red Sox have an extra arm in the bullpen. Bowden will move back down to Triple A in favor of Julio Lugo for Monday.

Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, and Jonathan Papelbon will be unavailable tonight because of their workload over the past two days. Terry Francona decided having the extra pitcher would be the safer move over having an extra infielder.

Johnny Damon will not be in tonight's starting lineup.

Thats means Saito will close (if applicable) with Okajima, Lopez, Hunter Jones and Bowden in middle relief.

That correct. Hopefully Masterson can go pretty deep tonight, although Bowden is stretched out and has gone at least 4 innings in his appearances this year. Bowden's 2009 stats:

Bill, you impressed with the Blue Jays so far?

They have the most homers in the majors, have Halladay, and are playing good baseball.

You're familiar with the Blue Jays in their glory years (divisional rival, fought tooth-and-nail with the Red Sox for many years); when should we start taking them seriously?

Should we wait until May or June like we did with the Rays?

I'm not buying Toronto...........at least not yet.

Their starting rotation could have been one of the best in baseball, but it is ravaged by injuries. Marcum, McGowan, Litsch and now their very impressive rookie, Ricky Romero, are all on the DL. Roy Halladay is a S-T-U-D, but he can't do it alone. B.J. Ryan, their closer, is also on the DL now.

I'm also not super impressed by their lineup. Sure they have some good hitters in Wells, Rios, Rolen and Overbay, but that lineup is not gonna make me forget the '78 Red sox or '95 Indians.

I admit the Rays surprised me last year, but in hindsight, if you look at their roster next to the Jays it's no comparison.

I think I may have overrated the Yankees (their pitching is still in shambles despite the additions of Sabathia and Burnett), and underated the Red Sox a tad (their pitching is just too strong).

After watching the first three weeks, I now think this division will come down to the Sox and the Rays.

I agree.

I think you or me could have a better ERA than most of the Yankees (Wang's 34.50 ERA is higher than HD's age:D)

P.S. You'll notice I'm getting this "name in quotes" figured out.

Thanks for that invaluable insight once again, Joe.
