News of the strange ....

Gerald Laird, light hitting catcher for the Tigers is struggling at the plate (again) has decided to "Change Things Up" to try and improve his .158 BA .....

In search of more hits, Gerald Laird decided "to change things up."

So he's switched from uniform No. 8 to No. 12, which means that hitting coach Lloyd McClendon had to find a new number, so he switched to No. 19.

"I better remember that when I call down for my suitcase on the road," McClendon said.

"No. 8 has been a good number for a lot of players," said Laird, "but not for me."

So he decides to Change his NUMBER ......:eek::confused::rant::rant::rant:

How is this suppose to help hit hitting ?

fwiw, there is alot of good info inthe article , not just Laird.

Just wondering .... Memorial Day weekend.

Tigers catchers are hitting .153 and .158 with 3 home runs and 7 rbi's on the year COMBINED .....

Joe Mauer has 3-7 in a single week.

Tigers catching D is very good with Laird and not bad with Avilla (Avilla being the rookie that is suppose to hit.... eventually.

Do the Tigers have interest in Pudge Rodriguez at the trade deadline currently hitting .325 with 1 HR and 16 RBI's.

Shortstop ....
Adam Everett splitting time with Ramon Santiago
Everett hitting .197 and 4 rbi
Santiago a bit better .257 1 HR and 7 rbi's

Everett was brought over for his Defense and he's played well defensively as has Laird ....... but how can you possibly contend with 2 positions hitting under .200.

To make matters worse, at Third base Brandon Inge who hit very well last year till his bad knees took him out of the line up ... can't hit his weight this year either, maybe barely .... .219.

Inge's contract is up ..... but I expect them to bring him back, his D* is AWESOME, that will keep him here.

Back to SS, they have a split situation with Santiago and Everett, is it time to bring up Brent Dlugach from down on the farm, but he's only hitting .258, thats still better than whats up here now.

Or call back up Danny Worth and see if he can play SS, he IS hitting .333 in the Bigs till be was sent down when Gullien came back up.

Should they be looking for a top SS at the trade deadline or in the off season ?

They have way too many OUTs in the line up to contend .... that said, they are only a few games out of 1st.

Make changes NOW or wait and see if it turns around ?

Nice to see Guillen back in a uniform again. Looked right at home at 2nd base.
Now if we could find a SS and a C that can at least hit their weight. Oh I'm sorry they are hitting their weight. Crap. Look for a trade next month to fix one of those problems.

I thought so too..... painfully funny.

Nope, I think Laird weighs more than his current avg.

I would like to see a trade for a bonifide catcher, but I'd hate to see who all we would need to give up.

Laird HAS been EXCELLENT behind the plate.

Laird on his first AB since changing his number hits one OUT !!!!!!
Then the A's LF'er PULLS it BACK .......... it was clearly out by a foot or two.

What luck Laird has had.....

Tigers bring back Max Scherzer from AAA Toledo (will pitch tomorrow)
Option Dontrelle Willis to Toledo and they have 10 days to trade him, or then he will be released.

Q. Why would anyone trade for him if he'll be available to everyone in 10 days ?

I think its just a matter of the procedure they have to go through. Its to bad it did not work out. He is not leaving empty handed with the salary made, but I think he really wanted it to work and gave it his best shot. Each game he pitched was hard to watch becaouse I think he was trying but you could see how bad he has struggling. When the trade was made to get Carberra the marlins basically saidthe tigers had to take willis

I agree entirely ...

Willis was taken to free up payroll for them and had to be part of the deal.

The DUMB thing (I rarely dislike what Mr. I does) was Mr. I giving him a 27M contract without seeing him pitch first.

Now as far as Dontrelle goes, he's a very good guy and always went out and did what he could.
I hope for the best with him.

I wonder if any team would take a gamble with switching him to a hitter if they all decide pitching isn't going to work ?
He's still a young guy ....
He's hitting around .235 in VERY limited work.
Ankel was able to make the move.

Wonder how Dontrelle would look in Right or left field ?
Someone will take a chance, I think.

Tigers are now farther out of 1st place than they have been at any time this year I believe.
My guess is the Win today and no telling what the Twins do today, but they seem to be playing pretty good ball again.
After going 5-5 in the last 10, they have Won thier last 3.

Tigers are just no that good. Period, and as much as it pains me to say it, this is a .500 ball club. We have one position player that stands out, but there is nobody around him. It is time to just go full rebuild over the next few seasons..

Too much dead money to sign anyone, and now I hear this Oswalt thing all over the place..WHY??? 23 million he is owed, and the history of coming from the NL to the AL speaks for itself..I hope they dont sel the farm to take him on.

You haven't been paying attention, the rebuilding has already started. You may have noticed the number of new names on this roster since last season? 4 rookies in the line up on any given night? I like the direction we are headed in. And there is a lot of talent down on the farm, just waiting their chance.

Trust me I pay attention, and I think you kind of just agreed with me. My message was to those who get mad and think this team will be in it at the end of this year. I disagree on the talent level in the system..Player position wise anyway..We some, but most of it is over rated in my opnion. My issues are with the money wasted on guys like Magglio, Willis, Inge,etc.etc., hell even Guillen..

Tigers are BETTER than your giving credit for.
They have more than ONE stand out player.

J. Verlander for One EVERY TEAM would love to have him.

Cabrera is another one that EVERY team would covet.

Magglio has been steller this year, very good arm, better than avg in the field and hitting .318 with 7 HR (more than usual, he's not a HR hitter) and 32 rbi's

There's three off the top of my head.

WEEI's Dennis and Callahan to be simulcast live on NESN

Don't look now, but Steve Lavin is making St. John's relevant again
