AL Central 2010

Scherzer getting serious now ?

Max Scherzer dominates in first outing at Toledo
Tom Gage / The Detroit News

Toledo, Ohio -- Excellent, Max. Absolutely outstanding.

But will you bring it back to the big leagues?

In his first Triple-A start since being demoted by the Tigers, Max Scherzer threw eight shutout innings on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.

Facing the Durham Bulls, he threw strikes. He dominated. There weren't many ways he could have been better.

Maybe if he hadn't allowed the one hit he allowed -- a single that turned into a double because of a bad hop in center field. Or the one walk he allowed.

Other than that, Scherzer was lights out with 10 strikeouts and a fastball as high as 97 miles an hour in a 4-0 Mud Hens victory.

He threw 103 pitches, including 67 strikes -- a far cry from the reeling right-hander who allowed 42 baserunners in the last 18 innings before his demotion by the Tigers.

Did the door hit him as he headed to Toledo and wake him up ?

I keep having to tell myself that this is a young guy still, for some reason when they got him I thought he was a seasoned vet, but he's not.

Back in Detroit Soon ?

We'll see.

More solid pitching by the 1st place Tigers for a 5-2 win. Anyway, I am looking forward to the upcoming interleague play starting tomorrow.

Not happy that the Tigers are in 1st, but there's a long haul to correct that! ;)

I think interleague play is an idea that had merit at one time, but has run its course. It should be deep-sixed along with the DH.

I feel the same way about the IL play, however, the Tigers turn out to be pretty good at it in the last several years.

or better yet if Bud thinks IL is still good do this

When in an AL park have the pitchers bat
When in NL park have a DH

Then the folks who normally go to the park can see something different that they normally dont see

they're actually tied for first; they just show up first in the standings because they're alphabetized when there's a tie. Tigers do have the best home record in their division though.

I don't care about semantics at this point, they are in 1st place.
The two team both have the SAME record, how can one not be in first ?

You got to love the pitching, starters and bullpen. What is Papa Grande's ERA now? He has to be around .49. Unreal.
Like Yogi Berra said - "If you ain't got a bullpen, you ain't got nothing." We got the the best bullpen in baseball, by far.

Paul,
How can you be tied for 1st and NOT be in 1st ?

Tom seams to be trying to point out that the Tigers are NOT in first when both teams have played the same amount of games AND have the same record ?

I must be missing something here.

today took a trial run down to Target Field so I knew where to park and such

Parked in the ramp next to the stadium (when you view it on TV in the outfield the OF stands have that slant...thats the ramp behind there)....walked maybe 300 feet and BOOM there it is..Gate 34 (the Kirby Puckett Gate)

Got to walk up to the gate and see inside...cant wait until tomorrow :)

I agree that it's a moot point at this stage of the season. However, I feel that both teams are going to be battling it out right down to the wire.

Some disagree, but I love interleague play and think that it should be expanded. :)

I dont mind Interleague but to a point.

Yes when Milwaukee comes to town its big because well its Milwaukee...and us Twins fans dont like the Brewers :)

But I dont see folks getting excited for a Mariners/Astros game or a Blue Jays/Diamondbacks game

Now that the Wings are done, it's MORE late games for Tigers fans, out in LA tomorrow at 10pm.
The Wings are only "done" due to the the worse refereeing in playoff history. I'm not saying the Shark would not have won the series, but the facts and lowlight reels speak for themselves:

The Wings were the 2nd least penalized team in the league during an 82-game regular season with a little more than 8-minutes of penalties per game. They didn't just "magically" start committing twice as many penalties againt San Jose. Also during the regular season the Wings were 3-0-1 agains the Sharks. Here is a breakdown of the penalty minutes in the series:

Game 1 - Wings 16 (1 goal game) - Sharks 14

Game 2 - Wings 18 (1 goal game) - Sharks 8

Game 3 - Wings 12 (1 goal game) - Sharks 4

Game 4 - Wings 31 (Wings 7-1 route) - Sharks 49

Game 5 - Wings 8 (1 goal game) - Sharks 8

With the exception of Detroit's 7-1 route of the Sharks, all games were hotly contested right down to the last seconds of play. After tossing-out game 4's as being a statistical anomaly (multiple player ejectsions and such) here is the series average in penalty minutes...all 1-goal games:

Sharks - (8.5 PIM)
Wings - (13.5 PIM)

Clearly the Wings were at a disadvantage with the Sharks having 2 1/2 more powerplays per game in phantom penalties. Again, I am not saying the Wings would have won this series, but after having played 14-years of organized hockey throughout the midwest and Canada (with some of the best junior hockey talent in the area) my blades on ice hockey knowledge is far superior to any of the arm-chair goalies swilling beer in the Sport Forum. I wish I had time to edit and post lowlight reels of the dozens or really horrible calls throughout this series. I don't mind losing in a fair fight, but there was nothing fair about this series.

Anyway, now back to your regularly scheduled AL Central 2010 discussion...

Are there any "No Parking" signs on the "ramp" ?
Just want to help out there buddy !

Have a great time !

Interleague Expanded ?
We only play the AL East 6 times, we play the IL games more than that

no
The ramp is used during the week for business folks since its in downtown Mpls.

Compared to what we paid at the dome (10 bucks for a 6 block walk), $15 and be next to it aint so bad

There are 3 parking garages by the stadium
1 is by home plate
1 is by outfield (where I'll be)
3rd is a block away

I agree with what your saying, but, I have turned the page on the Wing for this season and have moved on to the current baseball season :)

It usually takes a few weeks after the last hockey game of the year for that to happen (Wings game).

To read more of my thoughts on how the Wings games went .... The hockey threads are still open .... :D

I did very well in my trip to Comerica Park, had parking in the garage attached to the park.

Getting off the Expressway was the hardest part of the whole trip !!!

Next time up there, I'll add at least 45 minutes to the time to get there due to expressway traffic.

WEEI's Dennis and Callahan to be simulcast live on NESN

Don't look now, but Steve Lavin is making St. John's relevant again
