A few highlights from yesterday's presser.....
"If not for the coaching position at Ohio State, I would not have coached this year," he said.
Wow. Pretty bold statement. Not that I'm very surprised. OSU is Urban's dream job.
Urban Meyer will make $4 million per year, plus perks and incentives over the next six seasons. The contract includes potential raises approved by the OSU Board of Trustees each year. He'll also receive a $250,000 signing bonus and three retention bonuses, in 2014, 2016 and 2018, for a total of $2.4 million. All told, that would bring his average guaranteed compensation, if he serves his full six-year term, to $4.44 million per year. He would become the 3rd highest paid coach in College Football behind Nick Saban and Mack Brown.
Said he plans on bringing Luke Fickell back in some capacity, most likely retained as a significant title on the defensive side of the ball.
Made mention of "not liking the direction college football was heading" when he retired from Florida. When asked to specify, he made mention of sketchy recruit tactics. Says the game has been cleaned up a bit since then.
In sitting out last year because of "health conditions", mostly rumored to have been a minor heart attack, it was ironic that the press conference was interrupted by a camera woman who was experiencing chest pains. A call to a medic had to be made.
On one particular February afternoon after retired from Florida and when taking a walk with his wife, Urban recalls telling Shelley, "I've made a huge mistake". Coaching is in Urban's blood. He couldn't be held back. The perfect storm opened up at Ohio State and allowed for his dream job to become available.
In Urban's first gig as head coach at Utah, he led the Utes to a 11-0 record and a BCS birth. In his second year at Florida, the No. 2-ranked Gators beat unbeaten Ohio State, coached by Tressel, 41-14 to win his first national title. How long will it take Meyer to return tOSU to greatness?
Questions still remain whether Urban will bring the spread offense to the Big 10. When Rich-Rod tried to bring it to Michigan a few years ago, it failed miserably. He did say he was very, very excited about his new QB, Braxton Miller though.
Welcome home coach! Now get to work!
