I have a 2nd non-hdtv connected to my HR-24 with a coax cable. The new software is loaded, but I can't read any info, dvr, channel quide on the non hdtv set. Even if I set the resolution to 480, I sill get a message saying I don't ave an HDTV or the proper dcables. Any thoughts?

Ya, how are you getting the signal to the 2nd recvr/TV, there is no coax output on the D* recvrs anymore .....
Thats the first question.
I don't know how it was installed. All I know is that when it was installed, they ran a coax to an extra bedroom. That tv will only get what the main tv watches. It is with an rf remote so I can change the channels, but now the newest download with the new menu and program guide is only viewable on the main TV. On the non HD TV you can't see what channel you are no ect.
Are you referring to the new HD Gui or another download ?
What software is currently on it ?
I would look and see exactly how the coax is connected to make the other room work and make sure nothing has came loose or disconnected.
Based on what I read and can gather from limited info; an EASY and quick solution would be to run another RG6 line from your dish (or switch if you have one) DIRECTLY to the #2 receiver. This is the way it should have been correctly done anyway.

There is no second receiver. He's mirroring off the HR24. Odds are he's got the new HD guide and now the second tv isn't showing anything. And as far as running a second line from the dish, why? It's either got 1 or 2 already. If its SWM there is no problem with putting a second SWM splitter in line and running a second receiver. I see it done all the time. I wouldn't recommend doing more then 2 splitters total but I've seen 4 on 1 job. Not sure how it works but somehow it does. SWM is strange lol
The HD GUI appears only on HD capable outputs (HDMI or component) when the receiver is set for an HD display mode. The only way to get a GUI on an SD output is to set the receiver for SD output.
Long term, using HD receivers on SD TVs will be more and more problematic; especially as HDCP protected content becomes more commonplace and analog outputs are temporarily disabled.

He doesn't need more than one splitter with only ONE recvr.

With the new HD GUI, you can't have an HD GUI on one TV and then an SD GUI on a second TV driven from the same receiver. The DVR does not have enough processing power to handle two different GUIs at the same time.
You can get around this by using a component-to-composite converter ($40 from Monoprice). Connect this to the component outputs of the DVR, then connect your existing modulator to the converter. The DVR will think that both TVs are HD and so will output the HD GUI to both. People have reported this works fie, although some of the text is slightly difficult to read.
If you are already using the component output, there are HDMI to composite converters also.
