2011 AL Central Thread

Holy Crap! I stepped-away from the game for a couple innings and football game broke-out; 8-6 Tigers after 5-innings.

It was a very weird game but what a throw by Jackson to end it! It looked like Valverde was finally going to blow his first save of the year and Jackson bailed him out.

I missed the play, but I was following the play-by-play on my smartphone. I was surprised to see Valverde in the lineup again since he certainly didn't look 100% last night (he needs a few days off). Anyway, we were lucky to come away with a Win because I thought we were toast when the Indians has runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out.

The play at the plate would have Tied the game, not won it. Technically his save wasn't blown till the winning run would have scored.

Onward to Tampa where the Tigers are going to have their hands-full with a very good team, while the Indians start a home-series against a non-hitting Mariner team. Thank goodness Verlander is on-the-mound tomorrow night. :)

This will be the day that Valverde takes off, particularly if the Tigers are up by a few runs late.

Tigers are in a stretch of 20 days without a day off.

What a play to end the game !!!
Tigers good to win this one, after the 7-0 lead it looked like the Tigers were set to give this one away.

This is from his start last week. I'm not really posting this picture for any reason except to brag about how good my seats were. Taking 2 out of 4 from the Rays would be acceptable but I'm gonna stay out on that limb again and say we will take 3 out of 4.

I won't be joining you. Unfortunately, we've made a habit of taking our foot of the gas after winning a big division series...I think well be fortunate to leave Tampa with a split. The Indians could be breathing down our necks with a home series sweep of the bat-less Mariners. It's crucial that Verlander get a W this evening.

Well, good series Detroit. I'll give it to you. Your team stepped up when they needed to. Huge series sweep indeed. It'll be an uphill battle from here on out. Especially if the injury to Hafner is anything serious.

I hear you but I just think they are playing really well right now. I think we win Verlander, Scherzer, and Fister's starts. I think we lose the Penny vs. Price match up. It just seems like something clicked for Scherzer and Fister in their last starts and we averaged 7.33 runs a game against Cleveland. It seems like the offense has come alive since the recent additions to the lineup.

The Tigers SHOULD be much better than the Indians. My goodness, the Tigers' payroll is more than DOUBLE the payroll of the Indians!!!

By that logic the White Sox and Twins should be better than the Tigers. They both have higher payroll than the Tigers. The Twins are 22 games back in the AL Wild card and they have the 9th highest payroll and the White Sox are 14 games back in the Wild Card with the 5th highest payroll.

By that logic, 25 of the 29 other MLB clubs that carry a higher payroll should be better than the Indians. This team is clearly overachieving. I'll take it though.

To Put it another way in the AL the Tigers are 6th in payroll and 5th in the standings. The White Sox are 4th in AL payroll and 9th in AL Standings. The Twins are 5th in AL payroll and 11th in AL Standings. The Indians are 12th in AL payroll and 8th in AL standings.

I agree the Indians are getting the most out of what they have but its not like the tigers are at the top of the league or even the division in payroll. The Rays are also pretty impressive when it comes to payroll vs. standings. They are second to last in AL payroll, (13th just ahead of the Royals) yet they are 4th in the AL standings.

I want to share your optimism...I really do...but every time the starting rotation (other than Verlander) appears to be heading in the right direction, they wind-up tossing batting practice until Verlander takes the mound and settles things down. I love how we're swinging the bats, but without Verlander our team ERA is 27th of 30 teams. Anyway, I'm hoping we continue to "gel" and finish the season 20-games above .500 :)

I actually heard that statement from the Indians' STO announcers regarding the payroll difference.
