2009 NFL Draft Countdown

Humm...looks like the lions have a some time left before there next pick....who could be on there list

Where is HD ?
Anyone heard from him ?

Not HD, but a fellow Browns fan. Here are my quick thoughts: great job acquiring extra picks, but wtf are they doing picking a center, 2 possesion WRs, and a DE from Hawaii!!!!!?!?!?!

I'll have more in the morning. sheesh!

Now thew Lions have the 2nd chance to take Mauialuga

And they don't .....

Lions will go NO WHERE this year.
They must be in contact with Millen afterall.

Yep again they Pick offense over Defense or protection for the QB... I came home and heard the picks and my son ( the Bears fan) was shaking his head at what the Lions were doing/did.

Protection for the QB, I would not really consider a TE protection for the QB unless he's strictly a blocker and will stay at the line every play ....
I've heard he's a good rec. as well as a good blocker ...
I think I would have expected a O T for the O side if they were going to stay on that side of things.
Wheres the LB's or D Line guys they needed to be picking at these positions ..
They could have had 2 studs at LB for the next 10-15 years.

1 of 4, yes FOUR first day UConn picks. Amazing - never thought I would see that day.
Only USC had more players selected in the first two rounds!!! Randy Edsall must feel like a proud papa right now because this elevates his program more than any secondary bowl win could do...

3 for 1 from the Jets must be used to fill the gaps

So the lions got their linebacker....about 40 picks later. From Wisconsin, any badger fans out there tell me a bit about this guy

Looks like Beanie will go to the Cardinals !
Say good bye to Edgerrin James

Thanks God! I was very nervous for a second that he would go to the Steelers which was only one pick after the Cards. Wow. Close call.

Arizona will love this pick. There is a huge Buckeye population in Glendale.

Maybe protection for a left-hander... The Lions took the best players available on their board regardless of position. When you're 0-16 you need a lot of help and this draft wasn't going to turn this team around this season, no matter who they picked. Face it, we needed help everywhere except for kickers. we'll know in 3 years whether these guys are any good or not. Still...probably not the way I would have went, but the "brain trust" thought these were the best players available at the time of their picks. The safety they took is a head hunter, who hits big, he will remind you of Bennie Blades. The TE was the highest rated in the draft, and will be important in the new OC's scheme.

Fortunately this is a deep draft, and they can still fill some holes that will make a difference this coming season. After that there is the second round of free agency after the teams hit camp in July. Maybe they will address the O-line and D-line then.
Like I said, this team has so many needs, and we will be drafting early again next season. Obviously these guys graded out higher than the linemen and LB's that were available. Time will tell if these guys are right or not. Given the Lion's history, probably not.

Funny that Mauluga (or whatever his name is - the MLB from USC,) fell so far.

Day 1 Draft Thoughts on my Clevlead Browns

-Going into the draft, the #1 objective was to focus on shoring up our defense for our 3-4 Defensive scheme. (LB's, DE's, DT's, CB's and Safeties were our primary needs).

-Our first defensive selection wasn't until our 4th selection at #50 overall in round 2. DE, David Veikune out of Hawaii. He was the 10th ranked DE in the draft.

-The Browns pulled off some interesting moves to trade down not once, but 3 times in the 1st round! Then with the 21st over all selection, just as I was about to declare Mangini a Man-Genius since Rey Maualuga was still there for the taking, we draft Offensive Center, Alex Mack from Cal?! WTF?! Certainly not the sexiest of picks, but I guess you can never have too many good players on the O-Line. I'm willing to give Man-Kok (Magini + Kokinis) the benefit of the doubt on this one.

-Then in the 2nd round at #36 when Rey Maualuga was STILL there, I was willing to forgive Mangini on the passing on all of the talent in the 1st round with this one simple selection. Instead the Browns selected WR, Brian Robiskie. Albeit he is an OSU Buckeye and Cleveland Glendale native. But really Mangini? The 10th ranked WR over the #1 ranked inside linebacker?! Rey didn't last much longer. He was gone 2 picks later at #37 to the Cincinnati Bengals. :(

-By trading down 3 separate times from #5 to #21, here is a short list of all the talent the Browns passed on in the 1st round: DT BJ Raji, DE Aaron Maybin, RB Knowshon Moreno, DE Brian Orakpo, CB Malcom Jenkins, OLB Brian Cushing, WR Michael Crabtree and WR Jeremy Maclin.

-Even WITH all the trade-downs, in the first two rounds, we could've drafted 2 of the following with our the first two picks: Clay Matthews Jr, Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis. In one draft, we could've fixed our LB needs in 2 fell swoops! After all, in a 3-4 defense you have 4 featured LB's, so the need was supposed to be obvious! WTF Mangini?!

Our 3rd overall selection and our 2nd in the 2nd round (#50) was another WR, Mohamed Massaquoi out of Georgia. Great, another WR. I guess these two WR's make up for the loss of Donte Stallworth, but I really thought there were more pressing needs.

Needless to say, I am not happy with the first day draft of the Man-Kok regime. :(

2nd Round: Day 2

Our first pick of the 2nd round wasn't until the 4th round at #104 overall.

The selection: OLB Kaluka Malava from USC. Not the LB from USC I wanted, but I like the pick.

HD MM, I was sitting in front of the tube watching your Browns trade down, trade down, trade down; and then they took the center. I felt a tremor, and I thought to myself, Matt just erupted in Cleveland!:D

I know how you feel, you want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt, after all they work in the NFL and we don't. BUT in Detroit, the more it changes, the more it stays the same. 51 years of ineptitude, why should these guys be any smarter than any of the previous regimes I've lived through?

Just once, I would like to be wrong about the Lions.....

Random thoughts at the start of May
