2008 MLB Playoffs

Thursday ALCS Game 5 Pitching Matchup

Rays lead series, 3-1

Rays (Scott Kazmir) at Red Sox (Daisuke Matsuzaka)..............................8:07pm ET........................TBS/TBS-HD

Rays will win thanks to the Citgo sign - if not thursday, then one of the two games at the Trop.

It's got to mean something that the sign has been up 40 years with no problems and on the eve of a RS elimination game, there is a minor fire at the Citgo sign.

I hope I am not violating any rules by posting the following in two threads. Just did not know which one was most appropriate.

Go Phillies. I am still pulling for the Red Sox to come back because I want a rematch of the 1915 World Series. Gavvy Cravath was my hero but I also liked Fred Luderus and Beauty Bancroft. Did not care too much for Possum Whitted. Of course Pete Alexander and Erskine Mayer were my favorite pitchers. Eppa Rixey wasn't too bad either. That being said You gotta love the Rays. I have lived in the Philly area and near Tampa and my kids went to school in Boston. I can't lose no matter what. Just going to enjoy. Thanks APBA for those fantasy memories.

Interesting note about Brad Lidge........

Although Lidge has been perfect in save opportunities this year (41 for 41 in the regular season), it was Lidge who allowed a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the 15th inning of this year's All-Star Game, as the AL went on to win the game, 4–3. Coincidentally, it was that SINGLE blown save that will cause the Phillies to not have home field advantage in this year's World Series!

I may be wrong but technically I don't think that was a blown save. I don't think it is a save situation if you enter a tied game. It was a loss and that is really worse than a blown save so I am probably splitting hairs. All I care about is an exciting World Series. I sympathize with you since you haven't had aBaseball title since 1948. Shame about '54.

"Whatever you do, DON'T let us win tonight!"

RAYS- Pennant Match Point Tonight

So, here we have the possibility of yet another team sitting and rusting while the ALCS is still being determined.

Bill, as much as I want to see your boys win tonight, I also want to see the Rays win to "level the playing field" and have both teams off for a week before the Series starts.

Best of luck tonight, my friend.

P.S. The sting of the Angels' quick demise is softened a bit now that the Boys in Blue are out, too.

P.S.S. Although Manny ME touted the glories and wonders of the L.A. lifestyle, when asked after the loss last night if he might re-sign with the Dodgers, he quickly responded "We'll see" and walked away. Good riddance to nuthin' but trash!

The Angels' ace fared better than the Dodgers' ace. Billingsley got battered and fried by Philly; Lackey didn't exactly get pulverized.

IIRC, the last time both W.S. teams had a long lay-off was KCK's Angels- the Halos and Giants (yes, the Giants were actually good a few years ago) both won their respective LCS in five games.

KCK,
of course I want my Sox to win, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if the Rays win. I may be in the minority, but I think a potential Phillies-Rays series is very compelling.

Best of luck tonight, my friend.

Thank you, you are certainly a class act! :up :)

They were talking on local radio here this afternoon, that the Angels are more than likely going to offer Teixera arbitration. They went on to say what a threat the Halos are going to be next year. I definitely concur.

Surprise, surprise. He got what he wanted out of these two months, and will now get a monster contract. When he signs a 3/4 year deal with whoever, how long before an "injury" pops up? ;)

Well, at least I don't have to worry about you going nuts like you did when Manny shoved the office guy down if Boston gets eliminated.

Sabres,

Very true. But alot was expected of the Angels and we were all riding high into the ALDS. To be put out in the first round stung badly and to listen to Dodger fans stuff their advancement into the NLCS down our throats was tough to take at times. They were severely humbled on the much-hyped 20th anniversary of Gibby's HR in that very stadium 20 years ago that evening.

I don't know who is feeling worse today Billingsley or Furcal!!!!

Are these playoffs better than last year's?

While we thankfully have had only one sweep and TBS actually GOT some extra games, I'm still waiting for that unforgettable moment
(last year's Bug Game).

No. But I have to admit, winning these two World Series has/will soften the blow. Besides, how can you not admire this Rays team.

Bill, best of luck tonight. I'm sure you must be sweating bullets. I kind of had that same feeling in 06 when the Mets had John Maine and Oilver Perez in game 6 and 7 of the NLCS.

As far as Manny, I've heard people speculate about him going to the Mets. I hope not because we need a tough as nails veteran in the clubhouse, not some pain in the ass who cares about himself. He's getting older, let him stay in L.A. and let him bask in his own glory.
Bill, how about the other night during the beanball incident where Manny had to be "restrained". I think he had to be restrained from getting his ass kicked!!!

Overall yes.

But unless the Red Sox come back yet again to force a game seven, and/or the World Series goes a compelling six or seven games.......no series this year matched Indians-Red Sox last year.

How would you like to be a Mets fan while the Yankees either won the World Series or made the playoffs? The fact that the Mets have choked the past 2 yrs. hasn't helped either.

I still think that was a travesty- that team, losing to a VERY mediocre Cardinal team.

Given what has happened the last few years, I have to say it:

Were those Cardinals a fluke? I say yes.

Would be very interesting to see you and Sandra go head-to-head in some back-and-forth talking.

Mets,
thanks a lot buddy, and it's been great talking baseball with you and the other Mets fans this year. :up :)

Who's the biggest NFL disappointment so far this season?

Best World Series of all-time?
