2008 MLB Playoffs

What's the rule on how big a lead has to be for a closer to get a save?

There are a lot of variables concerning the save rules.

But I think if the Phillies have a 4 run lead, and there are NO runners on base when Lidge comes in, he's not eligible for the save.Don't quote me on that though. :D

There is one really dumb save rule that I do know:

Hypothetically, a pitcher could enter a game with his team ahead by 15 runs, BUT as long as that pitcher pitches FOUR innings, he gets a save.

I thought it was a 3 run lead ....

Here's the official save rules from MLB.com:

Saves:
Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or
- (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Nice touch, by FOX. They showed the Gibson homer which took place 20 yrs. ago tonight and they had the call with Jack Buck. I like when Joe was introducing the clip "Take it away, Mr. Buck".

You'd hope Lidge has exercised his demons. Man, the Phillies won and congrats to them but, boy, does this stick in my crawl.
