I currently have a hopper and Joey. I like the hopper better as it never gets as hot as the Joey does. My wife records a lot of shows and me not do much. I would like to record more shows or watch live but can't a lot of times because it only will record 2 at a time with prime time on. What would be some plusses to getting a 2nd hopper? One I can think of is if one hopper has issues that we won't be without tv. Any others??

I have two hoppers and glad I did get two. I don't have to worry about recording conflicts, and also now you can watch recordings from any hopper. I have turned off Prime Time Anytime on one of my Hoppers because of this plus it fees up a tuner during those times that I may have a conflict

2 Hoppers was a must for us, it opens up so many more options. I also have turned PTAT off on Hopper 1, since the partial integration update pulling PTAT between the Hoppers has made individual viewings possible. I have 2 Hoppers and 1 Joey, I have thought about getting another Hopper and ditching the Joey altogether, Joey for me is a little limited.

We're still considering moving from VIP's to HJ system and considering two Hoppers like the OP.

Not to jack this thread, but how were you able to order 2 hoppers and one joey from Dish?

Had 1 Hopper 2 Joey setup...moved and was going to add a 3rd joey but last min decided to get a 2nd hopper...if you can afford to do so def get the 2nd hopper...you will not regret it...best decsion I could have made

DIRT can probably do it right. Otherwise, you could order 2H/2J, then when the installer arrives, tell him to take the extra Joey back with him.

As for OP, if you have the dough, 2 Hoppers would definitely be worth it! No timer conflicts with the wife! Also, now, you can enable PTAT on only 1 Hopper, and access it from both! So no more PTAT taking up a tuner on the 2nd Hopper!

When I contacted dish as a new customer and politely reviewed why a two hopper/one set up would be my preferred set up they agreed

I originally ordered one hopper and one Joey but I want a 2nd hopper instead. The Joey is nice but is just too limited. If you have the VIPs I would def make the move as the hopper is way more user friendly.

We have two hopper/one Joey, Joey is in bedroom so it does the job there, small an does not take up space and is quiet makes no noise

Would ordering two Hoppers be like having two VIPS from the past? Would the two Hoppers be independent of each others, whereas the Joey is dependent on the Hopper to be able to see the recordings?

Hoppers can function independently of one another. As of a recent firmware upgrade they also have limited communication with each other (they can share the viewing of recordings). A Joey is worthless without a Hopper. The Hopper does all the work and transmits the information via Moca to the Joey. The Joey just serves as a means of displaying what the Hopper is doing at a local TV. Joeys don't even have tuners, so they are dependent on a Hopper for everything including live TV (not just seeing recordings as mentioned in your post).

If I was to upgrade from my existing VIP 612 to a Hopper, would this require any special installation?

I have contacted DIRT and was told I cant get two hopper , one joey set up. Its what i want.

I have a 2h/1J setup and I dealt directly with a Dish CSR. At first they said no but I gave my reasoning for that setup and after being put on hold they came back and said yes.

I'm willing to try one hopper two joey set-up, but if not happy, how big a hassle would it be after the fact to add 2nd hopper- just easier to do two hopper upfront

I was able to get 2 Hoppers & 1 Joey thru DIRT but my wife got a much better price thru CSR. At first she said they could do 2 Hoppers with 1 Joey and then came back and said we have to order 2 Joeys. Following the advise of several on this forum we ordered it like they said and plan on sending 1 Joey back. Install is Wed so we will see how it goes. I do have a 4th Tv if i'm forced to use the extra Joey for a while.

I am MOST EAGER to hear how this works for you. I'd send one or maybe both back. I only need the 2H.

Mount joey behind TV?

Unusual reception problem, or lack ther of!
