What is wrong with the Cleveland Indians?

In June of 2007, the Rockies were way out of the playoff race, but we all remember how they did in September.

IMO, the Indians need to hang around until they turn on the afterburners.

I'm a huge homer, but I can say pretty confidently that this team is going nowhere. The starting pitching is mediocre at best and the bullpen is absolutely atrocious. It's just not in the cards for us this season. We're one of the worst teams in baseball....

Why watch the Indians? For the friggin' Willie Mays play that SizeMo made tonight on his first game back from the DL!!!! WOW!!!!:up

He's Baaaaaccccck!!!!

Watching Trevor Crowe try and fill-in for SizeMo while he was out made me appreciate how great G-Size actually is! His all out effort, his athleticism and his hustle make me quite proud to call one of my own. Wow is right!!! :)

While the bleeding stopped last night (6 game losing streak ended), it surely wasn't for the faint of heart!

For anyone who watched the game, this was a perfect example of what went wrong with the '09 Cleveland Indians.

David Huff (brought up from AAA for one of the many injured starting pitchers), pitched an absolute gem last night. He went 8 strong innings while giving up 4 hits and ZERO runs. An admirable performance by the lad!

Fast forward to the 9th. Huff is pulled and the bullpen takes over in the bottom of the 9th with a 5-0 lead. Matt Herges (who?! exactly), and Kerry Wood proceed to scare the living daylights out of poor David Huff and the Indians faithful. Between the two, they gave up 4 quick runs. Woody ended up loading the bases before retiring the final out. Talk about a close one!

The bullpen's woes have been the center of all things wrong with this team. You can talk about costly injuries, managerial mistakes and so forth, but when your bullpen blows a lead, there is NOTHING more demoralizing to the team. The entire game your team works at building and maintaining a lead and when that lead is given up by these quacks from the pen, well that just sucks the living life right out of a team.

In short, we dodged a huge bullet last night. Until our bullpen is rectified, we won't be competing for a long time.

Why does one of the worst team in baseball have it's own thread, anyway? Should every team have it's own thread now?

1. This site has a bunch of Cleveland fans who are passionate about their team.
2. This thread has been around since May of 2008 and has proven to be lively.
3. I dedicated this as a place to rant about my team without muddying up the AL Central Thread.
4. Do you have something constructive to add to this thread or are you still bitter about your own team's woes??

Carry on.......

As they say...at least we're not Cleveland! :D

Your first three points were valid. Your fourth...glass houses, you know...

Sandra,

You are well-respected around here. But sometimes, it seems your mission is to just stir up the Kool-Aid. There was alot less of that when you were on yet another of your hiatuses.

You don't have to defend HD, he's perfectly capable. And HD also knows how much I like him...DESPITE his choice of college football teams. :D

Just a bit of fun, no need to escalate this to more than it needs to be. ;)

The bullpen is the worst I think I've ever seen. I wonder if there's a team out there who would be willing to take Wood off of our hands......I've seen enough.

I think bullpen woes are contagious. When they're on, they can be dominant. (See 2007). But when they tank, everyone tanks. I just don't understand how other teams can create an effective bullpen with cast-offs and young arms and we're stuck with chopped liver. Clearly there is talent in the pen, but right now they all seem like head cases!

Not sure if he would've been a difference, but I still think we should've never fired Luis Isaac. Poor, poor Loui! :(

During last night's broadcast on STO, Matt and Rick were discussing possible Managerial Candidates to replace Wedgie.

The two that stuck out were Don Mattingly and Kirk Gibson. Both, well respected former players who know the game. Both have stated that they want to coach.

I love the idea of Kirk Gibson. He's just the type of firey SOB this team needs right now!

I dunno about Don. He is quite joined at the hip to Torre. And with his personal problems right now, he is best to stay as a coach for awhile. The Dodgers and Torre really cut him a break last season and he is loyal to them for that.

Gibson? Wasn't he already a manager in Detroit? Or was he just a coach? He is in AZ now as a coach and seemingly rather passive.

Strange that Matt and The Big Guy would be discussing possible candidates openly.

I thought so too. I guess by all the speculation swirling around this city it's basically a foregone conclusion. It's looking like Dolan may wait it out this year before he makes any final decisions though.

Gibson's post-career resume included:

1998-2002: Detroit Tigers TV Broadcaster

2003-2005: Detroit Tigers Bench Coach

2007-Present: Arizona Diamondbacks Bench Coach

Ahhh yes! I remember those days when he was in the TV booth for the Tigers. It was a VERY smart move to get out of it.

OK...so maybe he's ready to be a field manager now.
