VIP722 (1080i or 720p)?

We just purchased a new Toshiba 32" LCD HD TV that supports resolutions up to 1080i. What setting should I set within the VIP722 receiver for HD output (1080i or 720p)?

I like 720p because it's progressive, but 1080i offers more resolution. I tried both settings and didn't really notice a difference. However, I probably would depending on the program.

If it says it "supports" 1080i, it is most likely a 720p panel. As to which setting to use, try them both on several different kinds of programming and see which you like best.

My projector is 720p but I leave my 622 set to 1080i for most programming. Every once in awhile ABC or Fox Sports looks a touch better on 720p.

Use the native resolution of the TV if possible. That is, if the TV has a 1920x1080 panel, use 1080i. Use 720p if the panel is 1280x720. If the panel has some other resolution experiment with which one looks best. I'd ignore the progressive/interlaced issue. Everyone will agree that progressive is better than interlaced. However for movies it's a wash since they are 24 Hz and sent at 30 Hz with a 3:2 pulldown. This allows the TV to deinterlace to frames without motion artifacts. Most of the video will originate at 480i anyway so it's already interlaced. HD content is split between 1080i and 720p so there probably won't be much difference on average.

Typically you will match the STB to the display. 720p to 720p or 1080i to 1080i.
But you can experiment and judge for yourself which one looks better!!

I agree with all the above posts, but just wanted to add a little more for you if you buy a 1080p tv.

My panasonic actually looks better with a 720p feed OTA converted to 1080i by the box, as opposed to sending it the native 720p OTA signal. This is very weird, so keep in mind you'll need to experiment if/when you get a 1080p tv.

It is my understanding that most stations broadcast in 720p. I know espn does and fox sports. Meaning that their cameras are 720p. So I would say that 720p is better for sports. Hdnet movies I think broadcast in 1080i so it's better for movies.

720p = ABC/ESPN/FOX

1080i = Everything else

Your panel supports input resolutions of up to 1080i. My gut says it's actually a 768p display. I would set it to 1080i. Obviously, check both and see which one looks better. Honestly, for the 32" panels it really doesn't matter that much.
