I have a HTC Droid Incredible that is currently running Android 2.2. My wife has the same phone and her software updated recently to 2.3.4 and runs much smoother and better battery life. Does anyone know of a way to force that update. I check for updates and it says none are available for my phone. We are with Verizon. Thanks.

If you have a subsidized handset and you don't want to root/unlock it, you have to wait until the carrier pushes out the update.
If you are ready to take over control (with all the risks associated with it) - read xda-developers.

I agree that Gingerbread offers a smoother experience than Froyo.

If you and your wife have identical phones/contracts and hers got updated while yours didn't - talk to the carrier.
Otherwise you won't have it unless the carrier "blesses" the update and pushes it out.

It's the price you pay for getting a $500+ phone for 1/3 of that...

We have identical phones on the same contract purchased and activated at the same time.

How hard is the process of taking over control of your phone?

Then you must have gotten the update, too.

Depends on the phone manufacturer and carrier.
HTC handsets are mod-friendly. Carrier policies to modding can be anywhere between lax to draconian.

Judging by the list of ROMs available, modding the Incredible is a piece of cake...:)

Disclaimer:
I've modded a dozen or so (types of) smartphones/tablets. Incredible was not one of them.
I reside in Canada and therefore have no experience owning a smartphone in the US.
