The NEW iPhone 4S Discussion

I still think it will be next fall. Too many problems with 4g and battery issues to pass the Apple threshold. They are a bit mor picky than Android with functionality. And the hype for the next device will keep folks anxiously waiting, just like this year.

There is just too much hype about 4G. It would be unwise for Apple to wait another year and miss the 2-year iPhone 4 contract expiration date. Too many kids (and adults) out there are always counting days to their contract expiration date, so they could go and get the latest and the greatest phone. It was a big deal when AT&T and Apple agreed to the early contract renewal for iPhone 4 release. And if iPhone is not the latest and the greatest at that moment when the contract expires, then Apple may lose a lot of customers who will decide to try out something else and will become locked into another contract. So, my prediction is that we will see iPhone 5 much sooner than next Fall. We'll see! :)

The cycle does matter. They were late this year. I bet they try for a July timeframe next year to try to get it back on track. I bet the 4S is safe for 9 months. I would speculate it all depends on how fast TSMC can get their 28nm fab working.

I would say July as well... I have read stories that the chipset which does 3G/4G in one small chip is due out early next year and that Apple is waiting for this chip for it's iPhone 5.

July would be ok, if they announce it (or leak it ;)) in Spring to prevent the original iPhone 4 customers fleeing after the contract expiration.

Makes perfect sense. I guess people wanting the insuranse and take the time and do their homework, the new Applecare plan is a no brainer. I'm sure SquareTrade will offer something along the sme lines? If I read the VZ Asurion insurance correctly, it's 10.95 a month, plus $199 for each damage replacement!?

We will probably get AppleCare for both of ours. How long do we have to decide to do that?

For all other Apple products, you had to purchase before the 1yr standard warranty is up. Not sure with the iPhone. I would think it needs to
be purchased at the time of the phone purchase?

Important Note
AppleCare+ must be purchased together with new covered equipment. See AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions for complete product details.

Will be very nice dealing with Apple. Have seen too many family and friends who have used Asurion for replacements, only to get a refurb'd
piece of crap back that doesn't work out of the box.

how about between march-may??? i think we'll see it by then.

I still think you guys are in a pipe-dream with January - May. And in so many ways, this discussion feeds right into the same hype; one phone is released, immediate frenzy about when the next best phone will be out.

I do not think the masses care about 4G; they want something that works and works well; and Apple is the master at that. The geeks care about 4G; the geeks are in a frenzy to get the next best phone; gotta have it; gotta have it now. I can see July-October, but not Jan-May. We went through ALL of this when the iPad 2 came out -- my god, it wasn't as advanced as expected (even though its an entirely new device than iPad 1), and we'll see the iPad 3 within six months... Well, six months are up, and no talk of iPad 3. I'd expect it in February, on the annual cycle.

Regardless, I am excited to get my new phone; it will have the same zippy processor as my iPad 2; it will have a stellar camera; have iCloud; have itunes Match; have Siri; it will run apps smoothly. All is good. :)

You have to remember that many of the original 4 owners are upgrading now after 1 year. AT&T has been good at changing upgrade dates for iPhone users.

You can get Apple Care one year to the day you get your Apple device.

They are doing the 3:01AM pre sale also. I saw a tweet from AT&T giving the time. Kind of sucks that they are doing the pre order so early in the morning for the East coast.

Site kept crashing fro 3-4 AM. I ordered around 9 AM.

The only point to counter this is that the 4S was released six months after the last IPhone (the CDMA 4 built for Verizon). This being the case, combined with the ridiculous pace of advancing phone technology may be demonstrative of apple moving to a six month cycle on phones. Time will tell.

But that of course, was NOT a different - except for the radio inside it -- phone. Just a new market. :)

But it was. CDMA chip and radio antenna changes. And the need for different iOS versions for each device.

I get it, but not the same - from the END-USER (who does not know anything about GSM v CDMA) it was the same iPhone 4 (just hopefully one that did not have the death grip in it :) )

BUT as you said, time will tell. And maybe, over the next few weeks, this thread can provide us good material to discuss the NEW 4S. As we anxiously await it and get to test it in the real world. :D

It's because the 4S left people wanting, for whatever each person's reason may be. I don't remember people saying 'well, this is great, but when will the 5 be here' when the 4 was released (maybe that happened with the 3GS?). This is also IMO a product of Apple no longer leading in the hardware department (aside from the 4S camera), something that started with the 4. Software alone is a much harder sell.

Interesting point I read on another forum... they pushed the iPod Touch as the most popular game player, and then didn't announce any revisions to it, and then showed the iPhone playing games better than it. Kind of a confusing message.

I'm hoping it gets panned here so I'm not tempted to go out and upgrade. It'd probably be best if I unsubscribed from this thread just in case.

I just need to keep telling myself that the improved camera, 64GB of space and Siri are not worth pulling the trigger. Hopefully, Siri will work on a jailbroken iPad2 eventually and then the cloud sync will be able to transmit calendar stuff and potentially other reminders to my phone. Then it'd be one less reason to upgrade!

The way I look at it is if your current iPhone is working great for you, then there is NO reason to upgrade. For me, my phone has been a frustration, and I was impressed enough with what I saw in the iPhone 4S to say, this will work fine for me. :)
