Review: Sonicview SV-HD8000

Hello Gents
Regarding the power supply on this STB I read there is a known problem with the power supply going out, If the front display goes out and you only see a orange light every time you press any key on the remote, there is 2 capacitors in the power supply that go out, C10 AND C24, you need to replace them with a 1000 mf caps, voltage 16 to 35 volts dc. make sure they the same size, they cost about 1 to 2 dollars at the local electronic store
hope this helps
Chewie

Replacing the C10 and C24 capacitors on the power supply does work. My 8000 started refusing to come back on after switching the power switch on the back (sometimes it would eventually but it took 10 minutes), and also when you saved settings or edited the channels the screen would flicker. I replaced both of the above capcitors with 1000 uf 16v caps and now the 8000 works like new.

they ar located in a 5V section, so 10V caps will work fine.. What is important for longer life is the temperature rating of the cap. The Factory cap is rated at 105 degrees-not good enough.(Screw up when extra hardware is added that heats up the box)
Look for a 135+ degree cap, and it will most likely last longer than the box.

CAPS and Scanning

Lately, when I blind scan or scanning the a satellite my receiver will lock up and have to be rebooted.

I'm interested by your information about the Capacitors posted above. Could replacing these two capacitors help my issue?

BTW, I updated my firmware to the latest official - - - version 2.57 and that did not help the problem.

I took some pictures of the CAPS - - - they say on the side

You'll be better off by saving your Channel file to Flash and doing system restore, then reloading the channel file from Flash, if erased (try Blindscan if it works first). You may need to do a system cleanup from old files if that doesn't helps, using Cleanup FW and procedure posted elsewhere. If you want to mod your receiver, there is a SV8000HD Mods thread on this forum.

Corruption?

So you are saying something has gone corrupt and I would be better off to start clean after backing up all my channels.

You don't think the two things are related - - - correct?

Correct. Its a standard procedure - start from restoring default settings and FW. ;) One doesn't rush to crash his PC when it hangs - there are diagnostic procedures in place for everything technical. This is not related to SW Reviews thread anyway.

The two main issues I had when the capacitors needed to be replaced were:

Very slow or no boot up
Screen flickering when saving changes

If your SV is just hanging up more than likely it is a software issue as Zamar said. I would try factory reset first.

You guys were right

- Did a Factory Reset and setup everything from scratch - - - No more lockups!

Once I get everything like I want it I will save a good bin file for my channels.

Replaced the CAP's in my SV-HD8000 today

My SV-HD8000 finally would not boot up and I decided to replace the C10 and C24 capacitors.

Bought the CAP's from DigiKey Corp. | Electronic Components Distributor | United States Home Page

I got part number P13119-ND

CAP 1000uf 16V ELECT EB RADIAL

My brother did all the soldering as I'm terrible at it. Just make sure you get the positive and negative correct when you replace the CAP's.

Here is one picture with the old short CAP on top of the heat sink and the new longer CAP already soldered into place.

The result was good and the receiver booted right up after the replacement of the two Capacitors.

sv8000 sucks !

I had an interesting problem the remote control lost range. Checked remote with a IR detector card and it was ok. Checked plugs inside receiver and ok. did a factory default and reloaded bin and channel list still no improvement. Next day remote had range and no more problems ?
I use my SV8000 for FTA only as I learned testing on dish net corrupted receiver and would give a channel change error even when antenna for that service is disconnected and on a FTA satellite. I have a 5" fan laying on top as the internal fan is noisy and does not do a good job. I disconnected internal fan. I like the satellite channels organized but the receiver has problems. AC3 audio decoder takes time to activate and antenna switch beyond 4 lnb's is hard to set up. The way is to set up as a motor drive.

no audio on ota

please help

I have sv8000 hd and i am having problems with ota atsc tuner. I could not get the tuner to tune to 177000 so i used channelmaster to place the channels in the box. I used my pansat 8000hd to tune to the channels get audio pids and video pids. I plugged it all into channel master. Now the channels show up without audio in sv8000. Can someone help me out on figuring out how to get the audio pid.

Several Questions

I have several questions about your setup.

1. What version of the firmware are you running. I just tested OTA again with version 4.43 and the Factory Firmware 2.57 and found that the Factory Firmware scans in more channels than firmware 4.43

2. 177000 is local channel 7. What market are you trying to get channel 7 and how many sub-channels total does this channel 7 have?

3. What type of antenna do you have connected to the SV-HD8000? The reason I ask that is that VHF high sometimes has trouble on some newer antennas.

I have the 3 local sub-channels from Washington DC for channel 7 and the Aud PID's are 52, 68 and 116 but I don't know if that is the same for all channel 7's across the country.

Hello and Good Morning to everyone!
I'm in the process of getting a SV8000 HD V2 for a friend of mine. I have read the review which is fantastic, but can't find anyware if the box have the capability to enter the channels manually?? Manual Search , so you can enter the pid's manually so you can get the CW's at Gal 17 @ 91 west???? Anyone?? Thanks

Firmware 4.43
Were you able to get 2.57 to scan 177000
2. 177000 is local channel 7. What market are you trying to get channel 7 and how many sub-channels total does this channel 7 have?
south carolina local7 with 2 sub channel

Outside uhf attenae I only get uhf in my area

Yup

Some answers (maybe)

Were you able to get 2.57 to scan 177000

Yes, I was able to scan in 177000 with Firmware 2.57, but I have both a VHF and UHF antenna. Note that 177000 is consisted VHF High and most UHF only antenna cannot get this channel. For example, my brother has a Channel Master 4228A antenna and he also has trouble getting channel 7 because it is a UHF only antenna. You may need some kind of VHF antenna to get channel 7. Based on how far you live from the transmitters will help you chose what you need.

Also, when you scan using Firmware 2.57, once you hit Scan DTV you have to pick UHF, VHF High or VHF Low in order to scan for all channels. Three scans needed. You may what to scan again and select VHF High.

Freq. 177000 is VHF High and that might be why you are not getting it

I have found this thread in another forum very helpful on the subject of UHF and VHF reception - - - - especially if you have deep fringe problems.

Could you send me the firmware please. they have 2.50 on there website.

The only way I could enter "The CW" channels that are on 91W was using Channel Master. This worked very well, but if you have never used Channel Master before it takes a bit of figuring out.

You might want to read this thread.

OK Thanks for the inputs. I'll need to readdress my efforts probably to Viewsat Max HD. Does anyone knows if this box have the Manual Search/Pids options so we can add the CW's at 97west?? Thanks
