Plug Hopper 3 and Wireless access point in to surge supressor?

In the past Dish has always asked me to plug its devices directly into the wall. For awhile we lived with the cord for the VIP522 strung across the room in order to do so. We simply don't have enough wall outlets close to the setup for this.

Today we are getting a Hopper3. A wireless access point will be installed too.

Why does Dish want these devices plugged in to the wall, when the maker of every other device in the media center recommends using a surge suppressor?
 
I always have all my electronic devices plugged in to a surge protector ,regardless of what DISH says. I learned the hard way back in the winter of 96. We had Primestar satellite back then and the ice storm hit our area and it cause electric surges and Brown outs and eventually power outage. During these wild surges the Primestar satellite receiver started smoking and then shorted out. It was plugged directly in to the wall. When they came to replace it a week later I went with DISH. That was January 18, 1997.

If it's plugged directly into a wall outlet it most likely will have a proper ground and perhaps it won't share a circuit with something electrically noisy. Dish is probably trying to avoid any safety and liability issues.

That said, a proper surge protector or better yet a UPS is the way to go. And if the lights blink out for a second or two you don't miss recordings while the receiver reboots. My H3 and access point are plugged into a UPS.
 
Thank you for your responses. When the installer came, he plugged in all of the Hopper devices into my good-quality surge suppressors without questions. Somewhere else I read that when you call in for service and they ask you to plug the receiver in to the wall, it is because so many people use poor surge suppressors that this is sometimes the problem.
