Personal Computer Game News

At this point I'm not sure what reason Valve even has for working on Half Life 3. Next to the money they make off Steam, CS:GO, and Dota anything they can bring in from a traditional AAA game like Half Life would be peanuts.

I'm not saying it wouldn't sell very well but I'm not sure the payoff would be worth the risk of trying to do another Half Life at this point. Half Life 2 came out over 11 years ago. In that time the hype for a non-existent Half Life 3 has gotten out of control. Every year it doesn't happen Half Life 2 gets a little better in these people's eyes.

At this point, no matter how good Half Life 3 turns out to be it would be impossible to live up to the hype that has built up over the last 11 years. It would probably be seen as a disappointment when compared to people's expectations.

So it looks like we may have our first "Indie Darling" of 2016. It's a new game called "Pony Island." I would talk more about it but literally EVERY ONE I've seen talk about has said "Don't look into it, just play it." Already getting some GOTY buzz, which is quite a feat in January. I'm tempted to fire it up tonight but I'm afraid I may not be in the right "mindset" to play it so to speak, but it's only $5. More info here:

I had never heard of that game but I just added it to my wishlist to check out later.

Looks like EA Access is coming to PC users now for Origin..

https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/browse/origin-membership

I'm think I'm signing up. I wanted the PC version of Dragon Age Inquisition anyways and the PC vault appeals more to me than the Xbox One version since most of the sports games aren't available on PC. They replaced those sports games with EA games that appeared on the 360, Sim City, and The Sims.

I still own most of the games included in Origin already but I think it's worth it for me. Surprisingly the PC version of Titanfall doesn't seem to be included even though it is on Xbox.

Since they make you link your Xbox One gamertag to your Origin account it would be nice if they gave us access on both platforms but I don't see anything indicating that is the case.

Too bad you can't buy long term plans for a discount, or that you don't get some sort of discount for having access to the Xbox One version as well.

When I was looking earlier I saw an option to buy a year for $30. That's 50% off the monthly price.

I just tried to sign up and the year option is gone. I know it was there when I first checked it out because I started to sign up at work and didn't finish the process because an appointment showed up. For $30 per year I would have been in but I don't want to pay $5 per month.

Less than 18 hours after launch, the open beta of Metal Gear Online for PC has been taken down.

http://www.polygon.com/2016/1/13/10762764/metal-gear-online-pc-beta-offline-exploit

What the hell? Why is this in beta in January 2016? The PC version of Metal Gear Solid V came out on September 1st just like the console versions yet the consoles have had Metal Gear Online since October. They didn't even bother putting the online mode in BETA on PC for almost 4 months after the console version?

I realize that most people come to Metal Gear for single player and that is likely why I haven't heard of this until now. I also get that since I have never played a Metal Gear game this shouldn't matter to me. It still seems totally unacceptable to me though.

The same problem I have with the PS3/360 versions of Black Ops 3 not having single player mode applies here. If you aren't going to fully support your game on a given platform than just don't put your game on that platform to begin with. It's just not right to give customers only part of the game because of the platform they choose to play on.

The PC version of online was delayed into 2016. They made this very clear. I know that the developers went into super crunch mode to get the PC version out there same day as consoles (remember originally it was supposed to come out after consoles.) They likely were only able to accelerate the single player and not online. Also, it's not like MGS V is being played for multiplayer. Many have stated that playing offline is the way to go.

Turns out the PC beta was pulled because an exploit was found that allowed people to bypass microtransactions and get free perks. Understandable why Konami would want that fixed ASAP..

As I mentioned here, MK XL is coming along with Kombat Pack 2 to consoles. Notably absent was any mention of the PC version, which at first may have been considered an oversight but I guess WBIE is hoping that their wave of hate from PC gamers will continue into the new year, as it was announced that neither the XL version OR the latest Kombat Pack are coming to the PC. Oh, and you know that new netcode they're testing because the existing one is so antiquated and sh*t? Well, CONSOLE players will get that, but not PC gamers. They're not even getting basic maintenance.

I mean, this doesn't affect me much personally as I already played MK X and have no intention of playing it again even with all the DLC, but this is just bad business. You'd figure after the absolute FIASCO that was the Arkham Knight port that they'd work extra hard to make things up to PC gamers, but apparently not. This is also going to kill future sales. The fact that it is impossible for PC gamers to get the "full" game is going to drive people away. And as we all know, PC gamers are nothing if not vocal when they feel they've been wronged, and I think they have a perfectly good reason to be upset.

Oh, and it looks like we have to send the family of Ed Boon our condolences because it looks like he's going to go to hell for lying...

This really makes no sense since they sell the season pass on Steam. All they would have to do to release the XL version on Steam is just offer a bundle that includes the base game and the season pass. I wouldn't think it would actually cost them any money to do that. It's not like console where they have to release a new disc that includes the DLC.

The net code is a whole separate problem though.

So not too long ago Scott Cawthon announced that there would be a new Five Nights at Freddy's game, this time being an RPG set in the game's universe called "FNAF World." It was set to release in February, but instead it ended up being released out of the blue last week. And while the game got positive ratings, it was undeniably unfinished and unpolished. Scott admitted he made a boo boo, and now the game has been pulled off Steam. Not only that, but once the game is finally truly finished, it will be released for free.

Here's some gameplay footage.

So, it looks like Her Story is getting a sequel of sorts..

I liked Her Story but I'm not sure I want to play the same style game with a different story. Hopefully the sequel is more than that. It was a cool idea but that doesn't mean I want to keep seeing more of it.

https://www.vg247.com/2015/11/18/green-man-gaming-pc-keys/

This article is old but I just came across it today. You may remember the back and forth that happened between Green Man Gaming and Reddit users a while back. To avoid problems like that in the future Green Man Gaming now lists the source for game codes on each game's store page.

I have checked a couple games out and many list the publisher as the source of the key. Others, like my recent The Division, pre-order list "authorized distributor" as the source. This obviously isn't very specific but at least now you can choose to only buy game keys that come directly from the publisher if you want.
