Personal Computer Game News

I don't think the top 5 of the US or global sales lists are all that surprising What is surprising is the games that continue to sell big numbers years after release. Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim all still in the top 10 (US list) for Bethesda?

This list also shows why Activision doesn't really care about PC support for COD. Black Ops III is #23 on the list, beaten by other hot new games such as Borderlands 2, Witcher 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Civ V.

Maybe my biggest takeaway is just how poorly new, AAA games sell on PC. Basically you have GTA V, Fallout 4, and everyone else. Witcher 3 and Dying Light are the only other 2015 AAA games to crack 1 million sold on the global chart and they just barely did. Witcher 3 is probably a different case because many people such as myself have that one on GOG instead of Steam. They might actually be closer to the Fallout 4 group than the Dying Light group if those sales were factored in.

Even huge games like Metal Gear Solid V and Black Ops III only sold 700,000 copies globally. Its no wonder that PC ports are often an afterthought on AAA multiplatform releases. The console sales numbers dwarf the PC numbers for multiplatform games so developers would be crazy not to focus on consoles first.

I can see the Fallouts doing well. With all the hype for 4, I bet a bunch of people either wanted to play them again and/or do so in preparation for 4 (even though there's no continuity between them.) Hell even I was tempted at times to try them out.

Black Ops 3 not selling great is understandable because CoD just isn't that big on PC (this will likely change once Mod support is implemented). And MGS has always been a console game, so to see it sell that many from the 5th game of a former (mostly) console exclusive is actually quite good, made even more impressive by the fact that the game was also available on the 4 consoles. You don't need to sell 1 million to be considered successful.

I find it quite telling that Arkham Knight sold so horribly. I bet that number doesn't take into account all the refunds that were issued (I sent my request in a few days ago.)

Life is Strange did pretty damn well. I wonder how exactly they counted that, because there's 3 different versions of the game (Episode 1, Episode 2-5, and All Episodes.) Do they count ALL of those, or just 2-5 or just all Episodes sold?

It's not that I think you need to necessarily sell 1 million copies on PC to be successful. Some of these games in question probably sold 10+ million copies though. If the PC isn't even 10% of their market it makes sense that it would be an afterthought compared to the consoles.

Hell, as big of a success as GTA V has been on PC it's still a tiny fraction of their total sales. As of August they had reported 54 million copies sold. They have 3.5 million copies, which is about 7%, sold on Steam. I'm not saying that PC doesn't add up to big money for them. It absolutely does. I'm just saying that I can see why a major publisher would be more worried about the consoles than the PC market.

Maybe GTA V isn't the best example because, like Witcher 3, they have keys that redeem on their own service. Still, the publisher said that 75% of GTA V's PC sales were digital and I think it's safe to assume that the majority of those were through Steam. They are by far the biggest retailer for digital PC games after all. When taking Rockstar's own DRM service into account the PC sales number is probably at 10% or maybe slightly higher.

Steam is under attack. Accounts are being compromised everywhere. People are logging into accounts and seeing info that isn't theirs. For safety you should probably log off.

Wish I could. Unfortunately when I try to see any of my account info or remove my credit card I'm seeing accounts belonging to random people. I have gotten several different accounts in several different languages that don't belong to me. I am even able to see their email address, partial phone numbers, the last 2 numbers of their credit cards, and their purchase history.

Luckily it doesn't look like I could actually do anything bad because any time I click anything I get an error message. Hopefully anyone getting my account is seeing the same problems.

Tom Scott did a pretty good explanation about what likely happened to Steam yesterday.

BTW, his channel is REALLY cool. It's very easy to get caught into a vortex as you just click on more of his stuff. His "Things You Might Not Know" series is especially good.

Unfortunately I have fallen victim to this way to many times. I had gotten much better about it over the last year or so but then I ended up buying the Star Wars Jedi Knight Collection a couple days ago so I'm still not cured.
