NHL 2013 Season

GOOD NEWS!

New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal is out indefinitely but is expected to make a full recovery from the eye injury he sustained Tuesday, the team announced Wednesday.
Staal was struck in his right eye by a deflected puck in the game against the Philadelphia Flyers.
"Marc Staal was examined today in New York by Dr. Mark Fromer, ophthalmologist, and Dr. Mendel Markowitz, maxillofacial surgeon. The injury has improved significantly and both doctors are optimistic that Marc will make a full recovery. Staal will be sidelined indefinitely," the Rangers said in a statement Wednesday evening.
Staal was injured 5:45 into the third period when Kimmo Timonen's redirected slap shot from the point hit him in the face, around his right eye. He fell to the ice and was writhing in pain as blood poured out of his face.
Staal, who does not wear a visor, eventually was able to skate off while covering his eye to stop the blood from dripping out.
"It's a tough, tough one," right wing Rick Nash said after the Rangers' 4-2 victory. "We're hoping the best for him; just hoping it's not the thing we all think it is."
Goalie Henrik Lundqvist said he believes the puck hit Staal flush on the right eye, leaving him with cuts above and below his eye. Dan Girardi, Staal's defense partner, said he was engaged in the corner with Flyers forward Scott Hartnell so he didn't see the puck hit Staal, but he heard it.
"It was scary," Lundqvist said. "He was in a lot of pain. It was tough to focus after that, really tough."
Staal had played in every game this season after a concussion forced him to miss the first 38 games of last season. He made his debut in the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Flyers.

I really hate OT/SO's the way they have it set up.

Not taking the streak away from the Blackhawks at all, but how many of thier wins have been in REGULATION ?

I did some checking and the Hawks record is quite amazing ...

They have 3 loses this year all in SO fashion, but they don't count in the standings for some reason.

Currently they are 21-0-3
21 Wins, 0 Losses, 3 OT Losses.

They have 14 Wins in REGULATION

Another 4 in OT
(I have no problem with OT Wins, they are part of the game Overtime that is, but still think they should play OT the way it's suppose to be played, till you have a winner.)

They have another 3 Wins that were won in a Shut Out

That accounts for their 21 wins ...

Now, lets take a closer look ... they have played 24 games, what happen to the other 3 games ?

Those other 3 games were games that they LOST Not in regulation and not in OT, but in S.O. fashion.
Thats all fine and dandy, except ....

Why is it a S.O. Win counts in the Standing, while a S.O. Loss does NOT ?

How can this team have 21 wins and 3 losses, but they don't count in the standings (they are 21-0-3), yet the Wins count in the Win column of the standings.

I have hated the way the NHL does thier standing ever since they went to this stupid format.

NHLPA approve of the leagues proposal to realign. Now the NHL board of governors needs to approve. Looks like Columbus and Detroit moving East is pretty much a done deal.

Yea .... No more LATE night Playoff starts till the Stanley Cup !!!
:high5: :bump2: :clap

YAY!

Hate when the Wild play all those 9PM start games in California or BC. Love the new "proposed" division
Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

It does look good ice and I hate those late games also when they play the West Coast teams like last couple games and a few more :)

Nothing looks good about uneven conferences (14 teams vs. 16 teams). I hated it when MLB did it too.

Now if they open up the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the top 16 seeds regardless of conference, then I'd be ok with it.

I don't see how the number in each makes any difference as long as there are an even amount on each side.

You hated it when MLB did it ?
The are not even doing it till THIS year.

That said, I also HATE the idea of MLB doing it, the whole reason around it is for the Commish to dilute the value of the WS.
Thats what your doing when you have Inter conference play EVERY day.

I seriously hope they change this as soon as Selig is gone, if not sooner.

I can't believe I have to explain this.

It's simple. It is easier to make the playoffs when 8 of 14 teams make it vs. 8 of 16 teams.

I don't mind the conferences being equal, but I hate when both have odd numbers. I don't like playing inter-league all the time in baseball.

The Ducks have signed captain Ryan Getzlaf to an eight-year contract extension. The 2007 Stanley Cup champion and 2010 Olympic gold medalist is now under contract with the Ducks through the 2020-21 NHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed."We are very happy to have Ryan committed to this franchise long-term," said Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. "He has often expressed his interest to stay in Anaheim for his entire career, a goal we share. He is a leader, a proven winner, and possesses a skill set that's hard to find. This is a great day for the Ducks."
Getzlaf, 27 (5/10/85), has appeared in 534 career NHL games with the Ducks, scoring 146-353=499 points with a +77 rating and 504 penalty minutes (PIM). Named the eighth captain in Ducks history on Oct. 3, 2010, Getzlaf ranks third among all-time franchise leaders in points and assists, fifth in goals and power-play goals (55), fourth in game-winning goals (25), second in plus/minus and sixth in appearances. Getzlaf has also scored 18-35=53 points with 85 PIM in 62 career postseason games. He leads the club in all-time playoff assists, ranks second in scoring and tied for second in goals. Getzlaf led the 2007 champions in postseason scoring with 7-10=17 points, setting a Ducks record for most points in a single playoff season.
"I'm extremely thankful to the Samuelis, Michael Schulman, Bob Murray and the entire Ducks organization for the opportunity to remain in Anaheim for the long-term," said Getzlaf. "This is a wonderful day for my family, as Anaheim has become our home. The fans here have treated me very well, and I look forward to being part of a winning hockey team and contributing to the Orange County community for years to come."

Thoughts and prayers go out to Marc Stall after that viscious puck to the eye he took last night. Scary and sickening to watch. Rumors abound as to his condition. One is that he was NOT taken to the hospital! Weird. Let the mandatory visor rule debate once again begin!
Saw the video. A visor would not have helped.

Overtime wins are fine. I think the league should dump the shoot out. It's just a crappy way to decide the outcome of a game.
I say, play a 10 minute OT with one 2 minute commercial break. If at the end of the 10 min OT, it's a tie.

Hopefully he'll be fine ...

As for the rumor of visors, I can see the league making it mandatory for anyone coming into the league and grandfather the players already there.
Personally, they can solve alot of the issues by going back to the old rules.

Never needed visors when the players Respected one another, not till the sticks started purposely coming up did you have the visor issue come up due to getting hit in the face.

As for getting hit with a puck in play ... sadly, those things happen, as you mentioned a visor probably wouldn't have helped anyways.

They do count in the standings. The NHL simply eliminated the Shoot out Loss column when the new system of weighting Regulation and Overtime wins.
Here's how it works..If two teams are tied in points, the first criteria used to be overall wins. Then head to head. A few years ago, the NHL mandated that Shoot out wins while still 2 pts in the standings, carried less weight than reg or OT wins.
Anyway, if the two teams are tied in wins, the next criteria is REG and OT wins. The team that has more of those gets the nod for the playoff spot.
